Where will she go now?!

I can’t believe it has taken me this long to write something about Portsmouth’s latest bar to bite the dust, Jack Quigley’s, shutting down. Obviously, there are a number of young people mouring the loss of their favorite drinking establishment. Just hope they don’t decide to drown their sorrows at the Coat.

What I want to know is what are the police going to do at last call now that they don’t have to round up drunk co-eds and corral kids stumbling in front of cars in the street. Where will the 2 trillion 20-somethings go to do jager shots and will someone please tell me why another bar offering 80s karaoke had to close it’s doors!

While all of this has been keeping me up at night, the bigger question is what is going to go in there next. I’ve heard talk around town the building has been put up for sale and there are interested parties looking to create the latest greatest venue. Will it be a bar or will it go more upscale? Will there be music? Will I want to go there or will it be taken over by horny dudes and tit-flashing broads?

I remain optimistic, but the past few places to open up in town have be a bit of a disappointment. I just want a place that’s mellow, with good drinks, good music and all my friends like to hang out there. I don’t want to get hit on every five minutes, I don’t want crappy top-40 music blaring as a bachelorette gyrates in front of me and I don’t want to pay $8 for a vodka tonic. Is that too much to ask? I suppose these days it is.

Until the Jack Quigley's sign comes down and another one goes up, I'm keeping my fingers crossed the new owners will grant my wishes.
