One of the benefits of the truly unexpected Demoratic primary tussle to Denver is the sheer volume of surrogates who get rolled in front of TV cameras for their 15 minutes or more of fame...think Geraldine Ferraro who went way off the Clinton the reservation with her penetrating obversations that Obama was a lucky black man who was selling a hot product -- or the poor state Senator from Texas who was grilled over easy by Chris Matthews on national television when asked about Obama's accomplishments. I watched Meet the Press yesterday and was underwhelmed by both former Sen. Bill Bradley (Obama) who proved again why he was one of the best anti-inspirational candidates to ever run for President -- or Rep. Nina Lowery (Clinton) of New York who managed not to directly answer a single question put to her by Tim Russert. Read more and see the slow-motion demolition derby for yourself here.
Other weekend developments:
From the Clinton campaign today: "Clinton racked up more than 12,000 bodies at various campaign stops." What's enxt, body counts?
Obama picked up suiperdelegates from Illinois and Wisconsin and as many as ten 10 delegates as the Iowa caucus process moved to its next stage.
Clinton has made another attempt to claim more credit for the Northern Ireland peace treaty in 1998. Depsite ciriticisms about her claims, the cmapign ha suppe dthe ante: Hillary’s presidential agenda builds on her long record. She traveled to Northern Ireland seven times between 1995 and 2004, and gave what Northern Irish leader and Nobel Laureate John Hume recently described as “decisive support” to the peace process in Northern Ireland. Her work at the grassroots and behind-the-scenes helped cultivate the conditions necessary for the peace to take hold and last."
Obama continues to take heat for his association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. What I find amazing is the so-called amazement from the pundit herd who find Wright's language shocking. Have you never attended a black church with an emphasis on the social gospel? It's can be revelation of perspective and one that goes against the grain of polite Washington society but the real hypocrisy is that Wright is truly minor league to the venom spew generated by the religious right crowd who get invited to talk not only on CNN but are courted by political leaders. See John Hagee, recently a declared supporter of John McCain or Pat Robertson and his ilk. As I said, when it coems to the American political establishment, hypocrisy and double standards are truly elastic virtues.
McCain is in Iraq which may or may not prove to be good visit as the violence intensifies again and the fifth anniversary of the invasion is at hand. Give him credit for consistency: he may go down because of Iraq but it won't be for lack of support.
Clitnon camapign on Iraq: "During her 35 years of public service, Sen. Clinton has amassed a record as a first lady who traveled to more than 80 countries and as a U.S. Senator who sits on the Armed Services Committee. Lacking a comparable record, Sen. Obama has premised his campaign on just words, most notably the speech he delivered in 2002 against the Iraq war. But with the fifth anniversary of the invasion upon us, the onus is now on Sen. Obama to demonstrate what he did to act on that speech when he got to the U.S. Senate."
