Kucinich to promote 'SiCKO' in St. Petersburg

KUCINICH CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE

ST. PETERSBURG FL - Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, the only candidate who film-maker Michael Moore says is "100 per cent on board" with his call for a national, not-for-profit health care system, will be here tonight for the premiere of Moore’s powerful new movie, SiCKO, which is opening all across the country.

"The other leading candidates are unlikely to be anywhere near a theater showing SiCKO tonight," the Kucinich campaign said in a statement, "because their health care proposals ensure that for-profit insurance companies, health care providers, and pharmaceutical companies will continue to play a major and very lucrative role in the U.S. system." McCain NH supporter defects

By PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press Writer

CONCORD (AP) — A state lawmaker said Wednesday he could no longer support Sen. John McCain’s campaign over the proposed immigration bill in Congress. But McCain’s campaign countered that state Rep. D.J. Bettencourt stepped down as its Rockingham County co-chairman only after asking for — and being refused — a paycheck.
“I have told the McCain campaign that I would withdraw my support as his Rockingham County co-chairman if Senator McCain continued to push for amnesty for illegal aliens,” Bettencourt said. “Although earlier I publicly endorsed Senator McCain, I cannot, in good conscience, continue to support him. ... We must enforce the laws on our books, not provide amnesty for millions of people who have broken the law since the moment they stepped on our soil.”

Giuliani talks tough to social conservatives

By Kimball Payne
Daily Press (Newport News, Va.)
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Conjuring images of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and evoking the mantle of Ronald Reagan, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday said Democrats vying for the White House are in denial about terrorism.
Giuliani sounded exactly like a frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president, accusing Democrats of being unable to confront Islamic terrorism.
“Islamic terrorists want to kill us, that is the predominant issue of our day,” Giuliani said, drawing a standing ovation from a luncheon crowd of about 650 people at Pat Robertson’s Regent University. The Democrats “are in denial. I think they can’t face this threat.”

Thompson defends lobbyist record

By ERIK SCHELZIG
Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Fred Thompson, a likely Republican presidential candidate, on Tuesday defended his work as a Washington lobbyist, telling The Associated Press that lobbying is an important part of life because “government’s got their hands in everything.”
The actor and former U.S. senator from Tennessee added, “Nobody yet has pointed out any of my clients that didn’t deserve representation.”
Thompson, who likes to cast himself as a political outsider, earned more than $1 million lobbying the federal government for more than 20 years. He lobbied for a savings-and-loan deregulation bill that helped hasten the industry’s collapse and a failed nuclear energy project that cost taxpayers more than a billion dollars.

Biden supports employee free choice

BIDEN SENATE OFFICE PRESS RELEASE

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) spoke on the Senate Floor today in support of the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1041), legislation to level the playing field between workers and employers. The legislation specifically allows employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation; establishes stronger penalties for illegal interference with labor organizing; and provides mediation and arbitration for contract disputes.

“When the union movement is under attack, the middle class is under attack. When the union movement is strong, the middle class is strong. And when the middle class is strong, our nation is strong,” said Senator Biden. “By making sure that all you have to do to join a union is no more than what you do to register to vote, we can change the tide in this country so American union movement can grow.”

Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on the United States Supreme Court decision overturning a portion of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law:

"Score one for free speech. Today the Supreme Court reaffirmed the First Amendment by rejecting a key feature of McCain-Feingold. The law trampled the basic right of the American people to participate in their democracy. It also purported to reduce the influence of money in politics, but we now know that influence is greater than ever. McCain-Feingold was a poorly-crafted bill. Today's decision restores, in part, to the American people a right critical to their freedom of political participation and expression."

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama is launching two biographical television ads this week, focusing on early voting Iowa in the first commercials of his presidential campaign.
The ads represent a strategic shift for the Obama campaign, which has focused on grass-roots efforts and now will introduce the candidate to a new population of voters watching at home.
Candidates typically hold off on advertising during the slow summer months, but the warp-speed campaign has forced the 2008 contenders to rethink the traditional approach. Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Bill Richardson have run ads in Iowa — and seen their poll numbers increase.

Romney softens fundraising expectations

By GLEN JOHNSON
AP Political Writer

BOSTON (AP) — Mitt Romney wowed the Republican presidential field with an eye-catching fundraising total and an innovative “National Call Day” earlier this year, but his campaign staff tried to lower expectations of a repeat as he gathered top fundraisers in Boston Monday for a final push before the second quarter ends later this week.
Fewer fundraising trips, more political speeches and downtime to prepare for the campaign’s first two nationally televised debates of the primary campaign will make it hard to replicate the $21 million raised from January through March, said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden.
Romney also donated $2.35 million to his campaign during the first quarter, giving the former Massachusetts governor a total of $23 million in receipts — the most in the Republican field. The second quarter ends Saturday.
“The possibility of Fred Thompson getting into the race has also made it more competitive fundraising this quarter,” Madden said of the former Tennessee senator and conservative who is expected to formally enter the GOP race early next month.

McCain campaign in trouble?

By Matt Stearns
McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — How did Sen. John McCain, the onetime front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, come to this?
New polls this week showed support for him plummeting in two key early-voting states. Tied for fifth place in Iowa, with 6 percent. Falling to fourth place in South Carolina, with 7 percent. Mason-Dixon Polling & Research conducted both polls of likely Republican voters, which had error margins of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
This after an ongoing Senate debate on immigration that highlights McCain’s opposition to his party’s base on a hot-button issue, and the informal entry into the race of former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who shot ahead of the Arizona senator in state polls and several national surveys.
McCain also is trying to recover from disappointing first-quarter fundraising, which prompted a reshuffling of his finance operation.

Bloomberg fuels speculation

NEW YORK (AP) — Speculation that Mayor Michael Bloomberg was interested in a third-party presidential run was merely simmering last summer when he was asked about the idea of leaving the GOP and becoming an independent.

GOP national poll: Good news & bad news

By John Harwood

WASHINGTON—The race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination has become wide open, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows. But the value of winning it has fallen sharply.

The survey shows that without formally entering the race, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson has risen to second place in the Republican field. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to leak support, but leads the pack with 29% to Mr. Thompson’s 20%, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has pulled even with Sen. John McCain at 14%.

Of greater concern for Republicans generally, however, is the party’s weak state heading into the 2008 election. By 52% to 31%, Americans say they want Democrats to win the presidency next year.

Barack Obama Calls for National Low Carbon Fuel Standard in California Stop

Los Angeles, Calif.- Barack Obama visited a local gas station today that sells bio-fuels to discuss his plan for a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard (NLCFS) to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In January 2007, California Governor Schwarzenegger issued an executive order to establish a low carbon fuel standard for transportation fuels sold in California. Obama’s proposal would create a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard based on the California proposal.

“The debate about whether or not climate change is a man-made disaster is over. The question now is what we do about it,” said Senator Barack Obama. “We know that transportation fuels account for a third of America’s global warming pollution. And we know there are fuels available that emit less carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere – fuels like biodiesel and ethanol. To create a mass market for these fuels and ensure they’ll be used more widely, this standard will require that fuel sold in the U.S. contain 5 percent less carbon by 2015 and 10 percent less carbon by 2020.”

By Beth Reinhard
McClatchy Newspapers
MIAMI — Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Rudy Giuliani are lapping their rivals by roughly 20 points in Florida, though many voters haven’t picked a favorite in the presidential race, according to a poll conducted for The Miami Herald.
Among Republican voters, 30 percent said they weren’t sure, preferred an undeclared candidate or won’t vote. Among Democrats, 28 percent were in limbo.
“This poll in Florida reflects what the national polls are showing,” pollster John Zogby said. “This is all wide open. The campaign has not been engaged sufficiently in Florida for us to get a real read.”

Gingrich warns of GOP disaster

By BEN EVANS
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Newt Gingrich, in a jab at President Bush, warned on Friday that the GOP will lose the White House and Congress in 2008 if the nominee is perceived as a continuation of the Bush presidency.
Addressing a conservative organization, the former House Speaker never mentioned the president by name, but his political point was clear.
“If the Republicans run a stand-pat presidential candidate who ends up being on defense for all of September and October and who is seen by the country as representing four more years, the fact is that Republicans are not going to” win, Gingrich told the American Enterprise Institute.

Edwards claims to have election formula

By PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press Writer
ROCHESTER (AP) — Presidential hopeful John Edwards said Friday he will win much of the South and help the Democratic Party win more U.S. House and Senate seats in the Midwest as well if he is the 2008 nominee.
“You should think not only about who would be a presidential candidate, but who would also strengthen our ability to help us win congressional seats in some of the tough places in this country,” Edwards said at a campaign stop in New Hampshire. “If we pick up 15, 20 seats in the House, some additional seats in the Senate because we have a presidential candidate who is appealing in a lot of parts of America, then all of the sudden we have the (power) to really move this agenda.”

Iowa Straw Poll takes a blow

By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential contenders Rudy Giuliani and John McCain bowed out of a high-profile Iowa straw poll on Wednesday, rendering the decades-old August contest all but meaningless.
Their decisions cleared the way for top rival Mitt Romney, who promptly claimed victory in the early test of organizational strength.
Both Giuliani, the former New York mayor, and McCain, an Arizona senator, insisted they would still compete in the state’s leadoff caucuses in the GOP presidential nomination process.

Huckabee admits Reagan date mistake

By ANDREW DeMILLO
Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Former Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday he made an “absolute error” when he confused the dates of President Reagan’s birth and death during a debate among the 10 Republican presidential hopefuls.
In a conference call with reporters, Huckabee also complained that the debates had not focused enough on substantive issues, noting that no questions were asked about taxes, fiscal policy or education. The Southern Baptist minister also wondered why he was asked again about evolution.

Giuliani to skip Iowa straw poll

By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rudy Giuliani, the front-runner in national polls for the Republican presidential nomination, will skip a critical early test of political strength in Iowa this summer, bypassing a GOP straw poll, his campaign said Wednesday.
The former New York City mayor will still compete in the state’s lead-off caucuses in January, and aides said he plans to beef up his Iowa campaign staff soon.
“We are 100 percent committed to winning the Iowa caucuses in January,” Mike DuHaime, Giuliani’s campaign manager, said in a conference call with reporters. He said the estimated $3 million a campaign typically spends to win the straw poll will be used instead to prepare for the caucuses.

Romney talks diplomacy in NH

By GLEN JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer
BEDFORD, N.H. (AP) — Republican Mitt Romney on Wednesday jabbed at President Bush, saying the image of the United States has suffered globally based on the perception that it invaded Iraq unilaterally.
Addressing civic and business leaders, the former Massachusetts governor chided Bush as his fellow Republican traveled overseas for an economic summit and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been critical of U.S. efforts to install a missile defense shield in Europe.
“I do think that we have suffered over the past several years for a number of reasons, and I think you probably know what they are,” Romney said, citing the absence of strong international support in the lead-up to the war.
“There has been the perception that we have not been as open and participative with other nations as is our normal approach,” he said.

Big step for Thompson (Fred)?

By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Fred Thompson took the first formal step toward a widely expected bid for the presidency, establishing a preliminary campaign committee on Friday.
The “testing the waters” committee allows Thompson — a former Tennessee senator and actor best known for his film and television roles, including as a prosecutor on NBC’s “Law & Order” — to raise money, hire staff and gauge support without officially committing to a White House bid and without having to publicly disclose donations or expenditures.

Clinton 'woes' in Iowa?

By BETH FOUHY

EMMETSBURG, Iowa (AP) — Memo to Hillary Rodham Clinton: Your deputy campaign manager was right.
An internal campaign memo late last month urged the Democratic front-runner to bypass first-up and momentum-generating Iowa because of Clinton’s lackluster showing despite drawing large crowds — a memo she immediately disavowed.
Yet, the reality from Des Moines to Dubuque lends credence to deputy campaign manager Mike Henry’s assessment that for Clinton, Iowa is “our consistently weakest state.”
