I wonder if the John Edward's fund raising efforts over the next 24 hours will hit a home run...or at least an exciting triple. Courtesy of that predictable right-wing Looney tune Ann Coulter.
Let me explain...
On a day when, despite defying astronomical odds, Dick Cheney (as in Mr. 'I'm a separate branch of government onto myself') proved he's actually stranger than many of us feared, on the day after Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana had the guts to say Bush's Iraq fantasy had become a certified historical nightmare, an odd piece of political theatre occurred.
Earlier today I sat down to an otherwise ho-hum conference call about the launch of an Edwards television ad for the viewing delight of voters here in first-in-the-universe land...I was struck by something that campaign advisor Joe Trippi (he of Howard Dean before the flame out fame) said that hatchet stories such as the recent Times faux expose about Edwards combining politics and activism -- the Times hinted that Edwards was oh so naughty in raising money to support his anti-poverty efforts when he was really using it to support a presidential bid without really being a presidential candidate -- or every time Frightening Ann Coulter opens her big mouth, sends supporters to the web to offer financial support to the campaign.
I'm not sure how much super-sized spin Trippi was spouting but I thought of it later when Coulter, who has became an enthusiastic Edwards baiter and is living proof that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, was caught like a deer in headlights when she was reduced from snarl to defensive whimper on the television show Hardball -- when Elizabeth Edwards called in to ask her "politely" to halt the personal attacks on her husband and family (in addition to calling John Edwards a faggot, the always endearing Coulter had attacked him for having the audacity of having a 16-year-old son die in an auto accident.) Coulter was left whining about Edwards making money off her and her big mouth, complaining about Edwards tricking illiterate juries and getting filthy rich, and claiming the Edwards' were trying to silence her.
Who knows how much this confrontation will generate in fund raising cash. What I do know is that Elizabeth Edwards sent Coulter to the detention hall.
