I received a press release from Brownback campaign a few days ago and it noted that the Republican Senator from Kansas will embark on a campaign bus blitz excursion in Iowa on June 18 to 21-- no doubt in hopes of boosting his hopes of high placement in the always entertaining (if remarkably overblown) Iowa Straw Poll in Ames in August. Of course, he might be one of the few ones left after the McCain and Giuliani campaigns said last week they would not take part in the Ames political circus for sale.
Anyway, the campaign said that the four-day Iowa blitz by bus will cover 27 Iowa towns and cities which I think is cool. Brownback will take in the sights of Oskaloosa, Knoxville, Indianola, Winterset, Adel, Guthrie Center and Perry; Boone, Jefferson, Carroll, Rockwell City, Fort Dodge, Humboldt and Clarion; Webster City, Iowa Falls, Waverly, Cedar Falls, Grundy Center and Marshalltown; Tama/Toledo, Vinton, Cedar Rapids, Marengo, Grinnell, Newton and Ames.
Brownback likes to celebrate “heartland” virtues but we wonder exactly when he might bring his conservative values road show to first-in-the-universe primary land? After all, he told me in March that he was determined to run a meet the people again and again campaign here in heartlandless New Hampshire but by my estimates, he’s been here a scant two to three times this year. Hardly a meet and greet overdose expected by the hearty breed of voter here.
Which might explain why Brownback is at 2 percent support, according to the latest GOP poll by CNN/WMUR. He is tied with Mike Huckabee from Arkansas and behind Rep. Ron Paul of Texas (3 percent) and behind non-announced but teaser hopefuls Newt Gingrich (4 percent) and Fred Thompson (11 percent). But Brownback is ahead of Tommy (“Don’t Call me Fred”) thompson, Rep. Tom Tancredo, Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore and Rep. Duncan Hunter who barely register poll pulses.
