Easily the most despicable campaign being run right now is that of Saint Rudy Giuliani of 9/11. The so-called America's Mayor has one card to play, the 9/11 card of self-annointed heroism, and he does nothing but play it relentlessly in his quest to show Republicans that he is muscle bound when it comes to terrorism.
His latest rant earlier this week about Democrats as not only courting defeat at the hands of the evildoers but actually yearning for it, came before a predictable choir of the converted at Regent University -- created in the image of mad preacher Pat Robertson -- in Virginia. According to various press reports I've perused it was vintage Saint Rudy with a favorite right-wing variation thrown in -- blame Bill Clinton for doing essentially nothing about Bin Laden and the terrorists in the 1990s. It's a lie of course but it's the sort comforting lie tailor made for his audience. In his speech, Giuliani displayed all the talents of shameless posturing along with the cowardice of taking no responsibility for his own considerable sins of omission -- namely after the first WTC bombing in 1993 of establishing the New York City's main emergency center at an obvious terrorist target.
Saint Rudy is accustomed to shilling these wares to corporate suckers no doubt impressed by his ability to transform his moment in history into multi-million dollar empire of opportunity. One hopes voters will become at least a little skeptical of the routine. One hopes the media herd will call his bluff as being best prepared and most willing to do what it takes to stay on the offense against the terrorists. Fear and terror, and talk of fear and terror is all Saint Rudy can peddle.
