Some might call it gloating and some may just say, like Mitt Romney, “lighten up” but the Democratic National Committee couldn’t help themselves last week. By offering potential Republican candidate Fred Thompson a real life jacket and a metaphorical poke in the eye in the wake of a staff shake up in his yet to be announced campaign, the DNC acted rather, well, like Republicans during their flights of omnipotence fantasy.
I’ve added the complete DNC press release below along with a Sunday Boston Globe article “Not so fast” by David Greenberg that cautions against too much pre-election glee on the part of Dems. The GOP has some built-in (electoral college) advantages that won’t be easy to overcome -- and that the Iraq war may not be the clear cut-winner issue that it appears today. DNC PRESS RELEASE
DNC Offers Life Jacket as Thompson Campaign Takes on Water
Washington, DC – With recent reports indicating that Fred Thompson’s nascent presidential campaign is already taking on water, the Democratic National Committee today sent Team Thompson a gift: a brand new life jacket. From the boatloads of senior staffers jumping ship just weeks after coming aboard to the campaign cash trickling in more slowly than expected, the DNC was concerned that the steady drip of bad news has left Thompson struggling to keep his head above water. The life jacket is our way of helping Thompson get his sea legs so he can finally stop delaying his "official" announcement.

The following is the text of the letter accompanying the life jacket:
July 27, 2007
Dear Fred,
With recent reports that your presidential campaign has already been knocked around by some pretty rough seas, we thought you could use a life jacket to help you get your sea legs so you won't have to delay your "official" announcement any longer.
While the rest of your Party’s candidates have been struggling for months to swim upstream against strong anti-Republican currents, we understand that this is your first trip up the river. From senior staffers jumping ship after just a few weeks on the job, to campaign cash trickling in more slowly than expected, we know this must be tougher than you envisioned. Of course, with your lobbying record and previous positions on a variety of issues just now beginning to surface, the forecast calls for even rougher seas ahead.
It’s going to be a long cruise, so good luck keeping your head above water!
Sincerely,
Your Friends at the DNC
