Independence Day musings

July 4 metaphysical musings
As I ponder the great question of why so few candidates are in New Hampshire at July 4th parades and barbecues, here’s a few matters to consider:

Do you know the way to Marlow?
Kudos to Gov. Bill Richardson and his staff for seizing the opportunity to be the first presidential hopeful EVER to visit long-ignored Marlow. The Richardson folks heard a story on NH Public Radio about this historical anomaly in first-in-the-solar-system land and so the Democratic contender will take his campaign to Marlow tomorrow -- which has the locals, not surprisingly, rather excited.

"In an era where campaigns are increasingly dominated by polls, fundraising and political consultants, to have a major candidate like Governor Richardson come to Marlow boosts my faith in the political process," said Mary Blank, president of the Marlow Historical Society in Richardson campaign press release. Located in southwest part of the state, Marlow is off the beaten path but was the birthplace of PC Connection back in the early 1980s.

When it doubt, play the Clinton horror movie card
Want to know the definition of a desperate campaign? Just before the end of the second quarter fundraising period, the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain sent out this e-mail message plea to supporters:

There are many reasons to support John McCain, but as we approach this quarter's fundraising deadline tonight at midnight, let me remind you of just one of them...
John McCain is the only candidate
who can defeat Hillary Clinton.

Measuring rank hypocrisy
Joe Biden is rallying his supporters over the commutation/pardon/outright obstruction of justice gambit by the increasingly shrinking President Bush for his payoff to Scooter Libby for practicing omerta (silence) in the CIA leak affair. For the second straight day, Biden has issued a statement asking among other metaphysical queries just how do you measure your rank hypocrisy?

Senator Biden issued the following statement in response to statements made by White House Press Secretary Tony Snow:
"Today, Tony Snow said that President Bush decided to commute Scooter Libby's 30 month prison sentence for perjury and obstruction of justice because it was 'excessive.'
"Yet, last year, the Bush administration filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Supreme Court in an attempt to uphold a lower court's ruling that a 33 month prison sentence for Victor Rita, who was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice, was 'reasonable.'
“The questions we should all be asking ourselves today are: Why is the President flip-flopping? Why does Scooter Libby get special treatment?"

Also, in an email to his supporters today, Sen. Biden reiterated his call that every American flood the White House switchboard with phone calls and express their outrage at the President's action. Sen. Biden writes:
"George Bush's disregard for the rule of law is truly unbecoming a President. I'm calling on every American to flood the White House this week with phone calls and tell the President,
‘In 2000, when you ran for president, you promised to 'uphold the honor and dignity' of the office of President of the United States -- WE'RE STILL WAITING. Call the White House: 202-456-1414.’”

Well, what are you waiting for?
