JUNKYARD DOG -- John and Elizabeth Edwards are making plans for a major bus excursion through the state next week to whip up enthusiasm for his campaign. The big news on the Dem front today is that Edwards’ has a junkyard dog defending his turf: his wife Elizabeth. Check out this interview in The Progressive magazine in which Edwards lets it all hang out with broadsides against Obama (among other things, he’s a thief of their progressive language) and Clinton (for being, well, Clinton we guess).

BROWNBACK SIGHTING -- It’s true, my hearty primary followers: after months of giving the cold shoulder to the good voting citizens of first-in-the-universe primary land, Sen. Sam Brownback actually touched down in New Hampshire earlier today. Here in this column we have felt neglected because back in March Brownback personally told me he was going to make New Hampshire like a second home. Maybe he was waiting for the fall foilage backdrop. Buoyed, he claims, by his third-place finish in Iowa Candidate Auction contest last weekend, Brownback made a cameo appearance at Thomas More College in Merrimack, a place where renegade GOP candidate Pat Buchanan made a stirring visit in the fall of 1995 (it didn’t hurt the former Nixon strongman and television commentator that he was the subject of a Time magazine cover story.) Brownback is no Buchanan and he will find the sledding here far more difficult than Iowa or even his native Kansas. There are many different brands of conservatives in New Hampshire and social conservative candidates tend to sink and sink quickly (see Robertson, Pat for a prime example). Stay tuned.
NET WORTH -- According to the Boston Globe and other reports, Mitt Romney and his clan have an estimated worth of some $250 million. We wonder how much less he has after his venture capitalist-fueled victory in the Iowa Candidate Auction.
MONEY CALL -- On the subject or money -- or perhaps lack thereof -- the Sen. John McCain campaign sent out a release today touting McCain’s new book “Hard Call.” The tone reminded me of a public television fund raiser...”We have a special offer today for the Senator’s most dedicated supporters. With your generous contribution of $250 or more, we will send you an exclusive autographed copy of Hard Call. With a donation of $1,000 or more today, we’ll send you the complete McCain book collection - all autographed by John McCain! You’ll receive Hard Call, Character is Destiny, Why Courage Matters, Faith of My Fathers and Worth the Fighting For.”
