Kittery clairvoyant opens window on the unknown

hands.jpg

Does “the other side” really exist? Lately there’s been a surge in paranormal activity on TV with shows like “Ghost Hunters.” Maybe our curiosity to know more about “crossing over” comes from our fear of, and fascination with, the unknown.

Imagine if you had the ability to see a person who has passed over, to communicate with them and use that special gift to help families and loved ones feel that connection. Or work with the authorities on missing person’s cases. I recently had a chance to interview Whitney Boyd of Kittery (VisionsByWhitney.com), a local psychic.

Runway Ready: Whitney, I must say you are an amazing women with many talents such as a background in theater, art, music and ballet. Can you tell us a little about your psychic abilities?

Whitney: The word “psychic” can be broken down into a few descriptions. The word “clairvoyant” means one who sees clearly. I am clairvoyant, as I have always had “visions.” Hence my Web site: VisionsByWhitney.com.

A “clairsentient” is one who can feel or touch something and bring in information for a client. Sometimes clairsentients use photographs or items of jewelry, a pair of eyeglasses perhaps, car keys, a shoe – whatever holds the persons vibrations or storyline. I do this oftentimes in my work.

A “clairaudient” is one who “smells” or understands the knowledge that comes in with scent in a psychic reading. This accompanies psychic input many times for me. I was working with a woman one day and in came the scent of blackberries – and I tasted them as well, so there was no doubt what information I was receiving. I told the woman about this and, before she could answer, a woman from the other side came in to speak to her. It was her mother – and the blackberry scent and taste was because it was her mother's favorite fruit and plant, and she had spent many years growing and harvesting it. Although I’ve lost track of a lot of people that I've read for over the last 30 years or so, I do remember this reading.

A “claircognizant” just knows something. They may not get anything other then a knowing or some event. It may stand alone or come in with other psychic abilities.

A “clairgustant” is one who can actually taste something. I do suppose this can stand alone, but I believe it works with other psychic gifts, as with the story about the blackberries above.

I use all of these abilities in my work. I am also a medium/channel, and work with angels, guides and those who have departed. I always ask my angels to go to the angels of the person I am reading for so that I might know what it is I am to share with them. I always stand with Jesus, the holy white light and all of the Great White Brotherhood, all of the great masters.

Runway Ready: When did you realize you had this ability?

Whitney: When I was 12 yrs old, I weighed 238 pounds and stood barely 5 feet tall. One day I went down to the 40-acre cow field by my home and, in tears, asked God to let me die. You know how cruel people can be to fat kids (sigh). Well, I asked to die and God answered me. He told me that it was not my time to die, that it would be “taken care of,” that when I turned 32 my life would begin to change and I would be called a healer of words. I believe that in my work, I am a “healer of words” ... that those who come for readings leave with a healing in their hearts of some kind.

At that time I wanted to go to camp, and we had to have a doctor’s permission to attend. Well, the doctor would not let me go to camp as my blood pressure was sky high because I was so obese. So, I had to have some blood work done – and that is when the doctor discovered that my thyroid gland was only performing at about 2 percent. So, with that discovery, “it was taken care of.” I was put on thyroxin medication, given a very strict diet and monitored carefully for over a year, when finally I stood on the scales at 121 pounds. Yes, it was definitely taken care of – thank you God!

Soon after God spoke to me, I started to experience someone tapping on my head. The tapping would start at the back of my head and I would see something, or have a vision. In the beginning, I didn't pay much attention to it and tried to dismiss it as best I could. I did not have much of a rapport with my family so I never discussed it openly.

The tapping continued over the top of my head until it reached the third eye area (center forehead) and then the visions really started coming in. One of the most remarkable visions I had was of a woman coming down a dark hallway with a huge gold key in her hand. As she came closer to me in the vision, she turned left to enter a doorway. The huge gold key diminished in size until it fit into the door and unlocked it. The door opened, the woman entered the dark room and, although I never saw her again, the visions become even more powerful and have never left me. I believe the woman was my guardian angel.

Runway Ready: I've been told you also work with the authorities in investigations of missing person's cases. Can you tell us a little about that?

Whitney: I have worked for many years on the case of the missing child, Tammy Belanger (she went missing in Exeter in 1984 at age 8). This child came to me one day while I was driving my car from Portsmouth, along Route 101, past the town of Exeter. I had never heard of Exeter, as I had just relocated from Rhode Island. Anyhow, this child’s spirit hung over my car windshield and put me on a hunt for her body for four years.

I am still working on this case and have had some very interesting breakthroughs recently, although we have not found her yet. I gave her my word that we would reunite her body and soul, and I will never give up. As a songwriter and singer, I wrote a song entitled “School’s Out,” which tells the story of Tammy and what happened that fateful day.

Right around the time that I was working with Tammy, I watched the news and saw the space shuttle Challenger go up into the sky and explode. I asked my husband at the time if one of our launches had gone up and blown up, and he said no. I thought for a minute and I said, “No one went up into the sky and blew up?” And he again said, “No, you are thinking about the one that burned up on the launch pad.” And then I freaked out, because I knew ... I knew it was going to blow up and I was soooo freaked out. I was going to call the White House or the police or someone, but my husband told me that they would think I had something to do with it and he would not let me call; so I didn't. Two weeks later, my husband called me at work and told me the space shuttle blew up in the sky over Florida. I had a really hard time with this and didn't really like being psychic for a while. It's not always glamorous work.

Runway Ready: Can anyone be a psychic?

Whitney: I feel that some people are more gifted then others in any walk of life, so some people might be more open psychically than others. In other words, when I teach a class in Psychic Development, I give very specific techniques for people to use to connect, protect and ground. If they really invest some time and effort into this practice, yes, they will find themselves tuned in and able to gather psychic information.

For example, those who win the gold medals at the Olympics have the greatest talents, and they have worked hard to develop those gifts. While some psychics are born more receptive then others, I do believe most people – with some devotion, practice and perseverance – can develop their psychic abilities, although some more than others, as with any talent.

Runway Ready: What advice can you give people who are looking for a psychic to help them find a good one and not a fraudulent one?

Whitney: I would say word of mouth is an excellent way to find a responsible psychic whose main interest is to serve the client and not grease their palm with gold.

Runway Ready: How’s your track record with predictions?

Whitney: Some of the most delightful people have come back to me many years later, when I really don't remember them or their reading. How could I? I used to do 10 or more readings a day at the Mustard Seed, four or five days a week, plus readings at home on the phone to people all over the place. Anyhow, they have shared some wonderful stories with me and I have stood there smiling, so thrilled with their stories.

It really makes me happy to be able to give people good information that benefits their lives. The happiest predictions are the babies, and then they bring the baby in to meet me – now that is joy! I believe I am quite accurate, and when I get a vision it’s generally right on.

Runway Ready: I've been told you have many talents besides your psychic abilities such as art, theatre, music, ballet and a love of Arabian horses. Can you tell us about these things and how they fit in your life now?

Whitney: I came in as a Pisces, with many talents, and a mystic rectangle in my natal birth chart that includes my sun, moon, Uranus and Saturn. So, it is my destiny to be psychic and use my astrological gifts, as well as to teach. I have always used my music, writing and singing talents as well, which is part of this “air trine,” and being a ballerina for many years comes from this energy, as well as my being a Pisces, which rules the feet. I have Mars in Pisces, which brings in some of our most gifted artists.

I have always worked with horses, which heralds from a past life in Egypt, when I was a young boy and rode the King’s horses, and lived my life among the deserts and pyramids. My love of falconry as well descended from here. I remember another lifetime in England, with horses again and falconry, and one in Africa. I still work with World Vision (a charitable Christian relief and development agency) and children in Africa, as my memory is so strong.

One night I was sitting in my living room and a child came to me in a vision. There, in my living room, was a young African boy, standing in the desert. I tried to communicate with him, but I could only see him. I have learned over time that when I have a vision and I only get a piece of it, more is soon on its way.

My guides told me to turn on the TV, which I did. Then they told me to change channels, which I did, and to stop at the channel that had the World Vision program on. Now, I really squirmed because this particular TV show is gruesome and it hurts so much for me to see these people who are at such a level of poverty. Anyhow, I stopped at the station and watched.

My guides told me to call the number that was on the screen, so I did. Then when the operator answered the World Vision phone and asked me who I would like to sponsor, I tried to say a 3-year-old little girl. Well, my guides would not let me speak. The operator heard my silence and, as I was reading him psychically, I knew he was thinking that I wasn't sure who I wanted to sponsor, so he said to me, “There are five of the neediest children, two of whom are spoken for. Will you take the next child in line?” My guides allowed me to speak and say “Yes,” and that concluded our phone conversation.

About a week later came the package from World Vision with my sponsored child's photo – it was Alemaehu Shanka, the boy who stood in my living room in the vision. It was an amazing experience and I sponsored him and his family and his tribe, sending food, love, gifts, school supplies. To this day, his photo hangs in my living room in honor of our other lifetime together.

What is MimicColor?

MIMICCOLOR02LG.jpg

What a serendipitous experience I am having; I read about this product the very same day I noticed all of my white hairs had suddenly reemerged! I will be requesting a sample of this product, and I will follow up with a review...

MimicColor is a new, innovative, cosmetic hair color touch-up for women and men that covers outgrowth between permanent color applications. It is available in five colors to match a wide-variety of hair tones, MimicColors can also be mixed and matched to add depth and highlights to everyday looks. Applied quickly and easily with two conveniently sized brushes or fingertips, MimicColor’s cream blush-like formula is mess and drip-free, leaving hair looking and feeling natural and soft.

Perfect for all facial areas including hairline and roots, eyebrows, beards and mustaches, MimicColor is a temporary root touch-up designed to extend the life of permanent hair-color for one-to-two weeks. Just one compact of MimicColor can last up to six months, saving consumers time and money in between necessary salon visits. MimicColor also adds great body and lift to the root area, acting as a styling tool, as well as a cosmetic cover-up.
MIMICCOLOR04LG.jpg

Now this is impressive, and something I will test; I am reading that MimicColor is water resistant and durable enough to stay in place during exercising and swimming! It also says that MimicColor will never melt off due to perspiration, and easily washes out with a shampoo. MimicColor will not interfere with permanent hair coloring. Simply ensure MimicColor is shampooed out completely prior to the new color application.

Stay tuned for the results of my test run...

MimicColor is applied in three easy steps:

1. Sweep one of MimicColor’s two professional brushes, or your fingertips, across the color palette a few times to coat with product. 2. Apply to the most visible outgrowth areas, usually at the temple, part and hairline, or at the base of the beard or mustache. 3. Blend to the desired color. No mess, no drying time! (To remove MimicColor, simply wash it out with your preferred shampoo!)

MimicColor is available online at www.MimicColor.com, and at select salons.

MimicColor may be perfect for busy moms, as scheduling a salon appointment every three - five weeks can be overwhelming for some busy moms. Add an extra two weeks between salon visits, and save on the household budget by using MimicColor. It's perfect for dad’s beard and mustache, too.

MimicColor's convenient travel pouch comes with two brushes, and is small and lightweight enough to easily fit in a purse, carry-on or suitcase. For business travelers that find it difficult to make it to the salon, MimicColor can extend hair color during important business trips. Or, for the casual traveler, MimicColor, allows consumers to look great every day of vacation without scheduling a last-minute hair appointment prior to departure.

You can also make highlights look brighter by mixing and matching two MimicColors to create low-lights that compliment your base color. This is a fun way to jazz-up hair without expensive salon color services; you can extend the life of salon color by two weeks, saving money and precious time!

Season Five Project Runway FINALE

korsnklum.jpg

((Fourteenth in a series about Project Runway, Season Five by Mary Salmon))

Leanne Marshall, the seemingly shy, yet incredibly talented designer from Portland, Ore., is the big winner of the fifth season of Project Runway. Tim Gunn served as a guest judge when Jennifer Lopez dropped out at the very last minute due to a foot injury. (She did manage compete in a triathlon two days later, though!)

Leanne's collection was wave-inspired, draped in large panels of white, cream and shades of turquoise. It was indeed a "collection," but I have to say I was a little disappointed in the color choices, or maybe it's just that I wish there had been more color... I wonder what a few different shades of darker blue or a greener turquoise would have done to her collection as a whole - she wouldn't have lost that feeling of water and waves. In fact, the turquoise blue she chose reminds me more of a sky blue in the photos and on the runway. I also do have to say I detested the tall pants that Tim Gunn fawned over. To Leanne's credit, I did think many of her pieces were very unique, created with great attention to detail.

All of the strong architectural elements that are Leanne were clearly present in the designs, but her looks possessed buoyancy and an ease, an effortlessness that belied each items' structure. Her collection was superbly edited, something she had challenges with at the start of the season; had she not brought her critical eye and judgment to each look and its relationship to every other look in the collection, there may have been a different outcome.

leanne_final_coll_4pieces.jpg

Leanne's Final Collection:

Leanne first got her itch for design at the early age of 12, after designing ballet costumes. A graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in San Francisco, Leanne was the recipient of the Levis/Dockers Fashion Designer of Tomorrow scholarship. Her graphic design experience influences her style, which can be described as innovative, structural and sophisticated – a style that's unquestionably her own. Her feverish appetite for fashion and creation probably lent a hand in naming her line "Leanimal," currently being sold in Portland, New York and Seattle.

This was the first season that the competition ever came down to three women competing for the grand prize. I really loved Kenley from the start of the season, but it seems that if I had been a fellow designer, I would have hated her. Emily, a designer who was kicked off at the beginning of the series said something in a television interview to the effect that the way Kenley was portrayed on the show was actually very kind and that she was actually much more of a "monster" than the viewers saw. Either way, I do feel bad that she gets accused of being a copycat. I honestly think she does need more knowledge of fashion history, but I also truly do not believe she meant to "copy" anyone.

did_kenley_copy.jpg
(Above is an example of one of Kenley's "copycat" designs. It's a painted floral dress reminiscent of a dress in the Balenciaga Spring 2008 collection. I personally like Kenley's design more.)

Another questionable design was Kenley's wedding dress:
mcqueen_copy.jpg
(Kenley's design on the left; Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 design, shown in Paris earlier this year. I think this accusation may hold a bit more water, as Kenley did not seem as surprised by the comparison.)

Here are a few other looks from Kenley's final collection:
kenley_finalcoll_3pieces.jpg

Kenley presented a strong point of view with excellent execution, neither of which were surprises, and both of which were appropriately lauded. Kenley's textile choices and hand-painting were beautiful. All of the silhouettes reflected that "Kenley" style we have all learned to identify. Her looks beautifully captured the essence of her inspiration: "painting the roses red" from Alice in Wonderland. I would not have been disappointed if she had won.

Kenley's Final Collection:

Korto's collection was pretty much what I expected to see from her, with perhaps a bit more vibrant color than I thought she may bring to the runway, which I really enjoyed. Korto fully embraced her African heritage in her designs, inspired by nature and the landscape of Africa. Her pieces were accented with heavy, beaded African jewelry that she also made. The colors, textures, and jewelry were all integral parts of her collection.

korto_finalcoll.jpg

Korto's Final Collection:

Michelle Trachtenberg, who sat in the front row, said she would wear anything by the female designers. “I thought they were all really, really beautiful. A lot of hard work went into them,” she said. “I love Kenley, but Leanne has some great stuff. I think the competition is between those two.”

Fern Mallis, who oversees New York Fashion Week, saw a more clear winner: Marshall. “It worked from the beginning to the end. There was a concept, she made it work beautifully, and executed it.” Last year’s winner, Christian Siriano, agreed. “I thought Leanne’s was fabulous,” he said. “She has to be winner, because everything else was not cute.”

I finally figured out why Joe, Jerell, and Suede were also able to show their collections at Bryant Park; they were the "decoy" collections. As the season was still airing, it was supposed to help the audience not figure out who the big winner was... It makes you wonder how much effort those designers put into their collections! (The Bravo website didn't make figuring out who won a very big mystery, either!) See their collections below...

The "Decoy" Collections:

Jerell Scott, Joe Faris and Suede (you know, the guy who talks about himself in the third person) showed far less inspiring and innovative pieces.

Jerell went Medieval disco in black and gold, mixing black netting, metallic plates, ruffles and lace-up bustiers.

Faris paid homage to the American rodeo, offering a collection primarily made of leather corsets and tight denim with motorcycle jacket details.

Suede sent out models in pink, baby blue and opalescent white sheath dresses and gowns.

English Elegance with an Edge at Madeline's Daughter - 10/24 Event

Sassi Holford, the sensational English wedding gown designer, will visit Madeleine’s Daughter on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, to show off her exquisite lines and sumptuous fabrics, all designed and created in her hometown of Taunton in Somerset, England. Sassi has been firmly established for years in London and the capitals of the Continent, and now can be seen in select shops in the US like Madeleine’s Daughter Bridal Shop at 775 Lafayette Plaza, Suite 3, Portsmouth, NH. For more information, call Madeleine’s Daughter Bridal Shop at (603) 431-5454 or visit madeleinesdaughter.com.

sassiholford_hi_res.jpg

“Sassi Holford is the UK’s ultimate bridal designer,” says Elizabeth Dirom, owner of Madeleine’s Daughter. “She is beginning to show in this country and is getting fantastic reviews. Wait till you see her designs and workmanship!”

Nothing is spared in the structure and the detail of her dresses to provide the renowned “Sassi Holford cut and fit”. The key to this is the integral corset in every gown that results in a streamlined silhouette and – just as important – the high level of comfort necessary for the wedding day. All Sassi Holford gowns are handmade by her first class team of talented cutters, seamstresses and hand-beaders.

Although constantly designing for her London boutique and for her catwalk shows, Sassi still takes most of her inspiration from her clients, “I love enhancing the female shape. Brides want to walk up the aisle feeling their most beautiful, and the right wedding dress can achieve that. It has to have a little bit of theatre and the effect can be magical”. The 2008 collection is classically elegant but with a distinct romantic tone created by French and vintage laces; and it will definitely be the year of the return of the strap! From delicate to bold, the strap is back, and with big, romantic skirts, the gowns are glamorous but have softer, more feminine looks by using silk organza and ruched chiffon.

Sassi has just completed twenty-seven years in business and is unique in her profession by being completely self-taught.

For over 30 years Madeleine’s Daughter Bridal Shop has been assisting brides from all over New England in finding their perfect wedding gowns. Shop hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10am to 8pm, Saturday from 10am to 5pm. For more information, call a Bridal Consultant at 603-431-5454 or email info@madeleinesdaughter.com.

Trollbeads Now Available at Paradiza

Paradiza in downtown Portsmouth (63 Penhallow Street) is now carrying Trollbeads. They are a beautiful line of artisan beads made of Italian glass and sterling silver.
autumn_mail.jpg

Trollbeads are unique. Each bead has its own little history, taking its inspiration from mythology, astrology, fairy tales, fauna, flora, cultural diversity, and last but certainly not least, in the familiar things of everyday living.

What is most distinctive about Trollbeads, apart from the original design, is the use and combination of fascinating materials. The beads are made from the highest quality raw materials including sterling silver, 18 carat gold, Italian Murano glass, natural pearls and precious stones. The original models are typically created in hard modelling wax – cast and finished in metal. Some models are then set with stones. And other models are created directly in molten, red-hot glass.

The concept of Trollbeads charms was developed over the past 25 years. Today, eighteen Danish and internationally renowned jewellery designers create the beads. There are more than 200 different models. The full collection can always be viewed at www.trollbeads.com

The many different symbols, flowers, animals, zodiac signs, colours and materials offer you endless variations and combinations, making the jewellery both unique and personal. You can start with just one bead or be bold and begin with a collection. The beads can be worn on a silver or gold chain – as a bracelet or necklace.

Trollbeads have won international artistic recognition and have recently been exhibited at Sculpture Objects & Functional Art in Chicago and New York.

For the second year in a row, Banana Republic and Goodwill Industries are giving customers a chance to share the warmth and shop at the same time. Customers who donate their gently-worn sweaters or coats at any Banana Republic in the U.S. and Canada from October 16 through October 26 will receive a 30 percent discount on all regular priced Banana Republic merchandise for the same time period - some exclusions apply, see stores for details.

Donated items will be sold in Goodwill retail stores across the country. The revenue funds job training and employment programs for people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience and those facing economic challenges. In 2007, more than one million people benefited from Goodwill’s programs. .

“The tremendous success of last year’s campaign encouraged us to continue this collaboration with Goodwill Industries,” says Chris Nicklo, Vice President of Marketing for Banana Republic. “This year, customers can get a jump start on the giving season by donating sweaters and coats to a great cause and once again join us in giving back to the local communities where we do business.”

Last year, Banana Republic and Goodwill Industries collected more than 110,000 sweaters that generated $438,000 in revenue to support Goodwill’s employment programs in local communities. “By donating to Goodwill, people are making an investment in their local communities,” says Jim Gibbons, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Each donated sweater or coat will help us earn the funding we need to provide valuable job training to those who need it most in local communities.”

Banana Republic is committed to giving back to local communities across the country. This initiative is part of the company’s broader philanthropic approach, “Give Where You Live”, which encourages customers and employees to help make stronger, more livable communities. gapvotepic.jpg

Centered Around a Fill-in-the-Blank "Vote for _____" White T-shirt, the Campaign Features Personal Webisodes by Acclaimed Actors, Architects & Political Activists, Real People Voicing their Passions in Store Windows, "Songs Of Freedom" by Musician Matt White and more.

Gap recently launched its “Vote for“ initiative [gap.com/votefor], a campaign that provides a platform for Americans to express their passions, opinions and ideas during one of the most important election seasons facing our nation.

Centered on a customizable classic white t-shirt that simply says, “Vote for _____.”, Gap is encouraging Americans to fill in the blank with whatever word, expression or presidential candidate they are passionate about. In addition to the “Vote for _____.” t-shirt, Gap is also providing other ways for Americans to engage with the initiative – from heartfelt and playful webisodes and Facebook Flair, to “Vote for” buttons and an original song called “Songs Of Freedom” by musician Matt White. Vote for _____.”

T-shirts are available for purchase at
gap.com/votefor and in stores nationwide beginning Oct. 23 through Election Day on Nov. 4, while supplies last.

“For nearly 40 years, self expression and individuality have been an integral part of the heart and soul of Gap,” said Ivy Ross, executive vice president of Gap Marketing. “With this historic election upon us, we wanted to provide Americans with a platform to voice their opinions.”

As part of the campaign, Gap has enlisted the support of political activist and American TV and film icon Norman Lear who founded Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan campaign aiming to empower every eligible American to register to vote. Norman participated in the Gap “Vote for” campaign by creating his own Webisode about how every single vote counts. Furthermore, Gap has selected 70 everyday Americans who will showcase their passions via their “Vote for ____.” t-shirts featured in Gap store windows across the country Oct. 23 through Nov. 4.

How To Win Your Ex Back Depending On Your Personality

the-break-up-color.jpg
Usually people fall under these four type of personalities, and depending on which one you fit under, it might have caused your girlfriend or boyfriend break up with you... You can still get your ex back, however first try look back into your relationship and think what kind of personality you have. Tip - It could be a combination of more than one of the following.

Reserved

Reserved people are usually introverted and like to keep to themselves. Most of these people don't mind not having big social company around them, and are content with their own well being. A reserved person with high self esteem can come off as arrogant to others, while a reserved person with low self esteem can come off as insecure to others.

Would you consider yourself a reserved person? Maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend broke up with you because you were "too reserved" and wanted someone that offered them just a little bit more attention. Sometimes a relationship isn't just about one person having the other person as a girlfriend or boyfriend as a title. Next time your with them, make sure your more opened up with your feelings and they'll start to appreciate that you aren't as introverted and self indulgent as you appear.

Outgoing

Outgoing people love social environments and usually are coined the term "social butterfly." They can't stand staying at home and love out going to places, as long as it's not staying inside the house doing nothing... Many outgoing people like spontaneity and unpredictability, which is why you see many outgoing people at clubs, bars, and parties.

Would you consider yourself outgoing? If you do, maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend was the more casual, reserved type and didn't feel comfortable seeing you hang out with other people risking the chances of you be taken by someone else. As they sat home watching TV, they probably kept thinking about what you were doing and who you were with. Those feeling for them might have been too unbearable. Next time you meet with them, cool down a bit. Focus your attention on them, be the ones to ask them questions, and assure them that they are the ones that you want and no one else.

Casual

Casual people usually are people that don't mind and aren't affected by "drama." They are people that enjoy "going with the flow" of things, especially things that happen in everyday life. They are easy going and usually are very approachable people. Casual people tend to hang out at more easy going environments like bookstores, dog parks, at a friends place, and occasionally the movies. But they tend to hang out less in loud, rowdy environments like those of loud clubs, bars, and raves.

Are you a casual person? Cool, we have something in common. Anyway, maybe your girlfriend boyfriend broke up with because you were "too down to earth." This basically means that you didn't care what happened, were indecisive when they asked what you wanted to do, and did not bring enough excitement and adventure to the table. Next time your with your ex, take the effort to decide on an exciting and fun activity that both you guys can do. Show them that you can be just as adventurous as anybody else.

Emotional

Emotional people have qualities from all of the above, plus drama. They enjoy receiving attention, as well as giving attention and are very unpredictable due to their unstable moods. One minute they'll be jumping for joy and the next crying in bed. Sometimes they can be fun to hang out with but sometimes are very obnoxious. Emotional people can adapt themselves to any environment from a coffee shop to a local club. Wherever they go, drama usually follows them around and thus they depend a lot on people's attention.

Would you consider yourself an emotional person? If yes, the reason your girlfriend or boyfriend broke up with you might have been because you were more dependent on their attention than them being dependent on yours. They may have also had difficulty keeping up with your problems and emotional mood swings, and needed you to be more independent, along with the goal of having a stable relationship. Next time you're with them, don't tell them about your feelings and don't act desperate! Just relax, and enjoy yourself as well as their company. They'll see your independent qualities and instantly be attracted to that. Buzz up!

Dr. Lawrence Gray on ABC “Wife Swap”

Tune in TONIGHT, Friday, October 17th to see Dr. Lawrence Gray on ABC “Wife Swap”

wifeswap_logo.jpg

Dr. Lawrence Gray of Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center, located on Griffin Road in Portsmouth, NH, will be on a segment of ABC’s “Wife Swap” which airs tonight, Friday, October 17th. Producers from the hit reality television show, “Wife Swap”, came to his Portsmouth office and filmed an episode during which they seek Dr. Gray’s professional medical advice.

dr_gray_pic.jpg

The premise of ABC’s “Wife Swap” is that two very different families exchange wives for two weeks as head of the household to teach each family their way of life while experiencing a new way of life. The segment that involved Dr. Gray, exchanges a West coast wife with an East coast wife. The segment spotlights that getting older and focusing on your family does not mean that you have to stop taking care of yourself. An all new season of “Wife Swap” starts this month.

Globally respected and acknowledged as a leader in plastic surgery, Dr. Gray was selected by the producers because of his strong reputation and 23 years of experience, as well as his state of the art facility. Dr. Gray is well known in the medical community as a leader in the plastic surgery profession and is also nationally and internationally recognized as the inventor of the scarless breast reduction; a revolutionary procedure that eliminates scars associated with the older, traditional method of breast reduction. Dr. Gray is continually sought out to teach this technique to his fellow board certified plastic surgeons. Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center is the first and only globally accredited facility in New England. This achievement certifies having satisfied rigorous standards as developed and approved by the International Society Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to insure standards of safety throughout the world for plastic surgical facilities.

“While it is very flattering to be on a national television program, I was trying to represent, not just myself, but the plastic surgeon medical profession and our high integrity level in general”, says Dr. Larry Gray. “When selecting a professional plastic surgeon, you want to look for someone who is well trained, board certified, and experienced. I strongly believe in patient education, and we take the time to work with patients to ensure that they are fully informed. Plastic surgery can have a much broader impact on your life than simply improving your appearance. When you look the way you want to look, your self-confidence naturally increases, and a boost in self-confidence can help you in many areas of life, from personal relationships to the world of business.”

For “Wife Swap”, Dr. Gray met with one of the wives and her “husband” from the swapped family and gave some general medical advice. “No ethical professional plastic surgeon is going to critique someone else’s photograph or provide “free” plastic surgery for the sake of television. If you do elect to have cosmetic surgery, you need to do it for you. It is a very personal decision and you should make the decision after much consultation with your doctor.”

Although Dr. Gray took his role very seriously, he did enjoy the unique experience. “I have to admit that participating in the production of a reality show was very different and a lot of fun. I look forward to watching the episode on October 17th.”

Feeling Beautiful after Breast Cancer with Bella Intimates

Bella Intimates is hosting an evening for the Breast Cancer Support Group this coming Tuesday, 10/21, at 5pm at the Rye store.

Bella Intimates owner, Shelly Manougian, understands the importance of offering different bra styles in high–quality fabrics to ensure maximum comfort, support and a proper fit. All the bras at Bella Intimates are carefully chosen by Manougian, who has been a bra fit specialist in the Seacoast area for the last 18 years. For the past eight years, Manougian has been bringing her expertise to women who have had, or are currently battling breast cancer, and have undergone a mastectomy. “Fitting and working with women all these years, has allowed me to hear about and see the positive changes a proper fitting bra has made in many women’s lives,” said Manougian.

Pictured below are a couple of masectomy products available at Bella Intimates.

bella_products_oct_09.jpg

Over the years, Manougian has worked with women who had undergone a mastectomy. These women were usually in the shop for other reasons. Often times while working with them in the fitting room, they would open up and talk about how uncomfortable they were in their bra, or how the breast form they were wearing did not seem right. “They were uncomfortable because the bras did not fit them properly," said Manougian. After thinking about it, Manougian felt she could help these women.

Expanding her business, which is located in the Rosewood at Rye, on Rte 1 has allowed her to offer a place for women to go to be fitted. At Bella Intimates, Manougian offers discreet, private fittings, in a feminine and professional atmosphere. Being a cancer survivor herself, Manougian knows all too well the need to eschew the sterile environment of a medical facility as often as possible while dealing with cancer. “When going through breast cancer, women spend a lot of time in doctor’s offices and hospitals," said Manougian, “so it was important to offer a place where a woman could go for a mastectomy fitting and escape all that.”

bella-BRA_ROOM.jpg

Once a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer she will have many decisions to make regarding treatment options and post-surgery needs. At Bella Intimates, Manougian helps inform her clients of their post surgery options available to help restore their balance and symmetry.

Manougian, a certified mastectomy fitter, also has a certification in Radiant Impressions, which allows Manougian to offer her clients a large range of options. Radiant Impressions is a customized breast form that mirrors a woman’s existing breast, restoring a sense of wholeness without invasive surgery. This lightweight and durable construction allows the prosthesis to be worn while swimming, running, and engaging in other physical activities. Radiant Impressions offers 24 colors to choose from, providing a close match for any skin tone.
The traditional breast forms are not the forms of years past. With lightweight silicone and a matte skin look, these breast forms help define what a woman’s breast should be; soft and natural. They also offer a natural drape not normally found with others. The breast forms are available in different sizes and shapes, to meet a woman’s individual needs.

Manougian who is very particular in what she carries in her shop, offers nothing but the finest in bras, camisoles, and swimwear for a women who has a mastectomy. The quality, fabric, structure and design all key parts in choosing what will be carried at Bella Intimates. “Women who have had a mastectomy have already been through a lot, they don’t need a reminder of it by feeling the discomfort of an ill-fitting bra, or by seeing an unattractive one when they look in the mirror," says Manougian.

Bella Intimates' mission is to make you feel and look beautiful about yourself, both inside and out. Remember, when you feel confident and elegant… you look it! Bella Intimates is open Tuesday- Saturday 10-6 or by appointment. Located at 150 Lafayette Road in Rye and 33 Deer Street, Portsmouth.

Project Runway Finale - Part One

Runway show starts at 2:47 minute mark:

TONIGHT'S EPISODE IS THE FINALE - PART TWO... BRAVO AT 9PM TONIGHT!!!
THIS IS THE ONE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS!!!!

((Thirteenth in a series about Project Runway, Season 5 by Mary Salmon))

Please watch the video above because, for some reason, the photos I always "borrow" from Bravo TV's Project Runway website were really not up to par this week. (Could it have something to do with Project Runway leaving the network?)

The designers return, each having spent months designing an entire collection, hoping to show it at Bryant Park during NYC Fashion Week. We have been told that of Korto, Kenley, Jerell, and Leanne, only three will get to show their collections. (This is a sore spot with me, as it is fairly common knowledge that even Suede and Joe were able to show at Bryant Park during NYC Fashion Week... Bravo even has the footage on the website. So why pretend only three designers will make it all the way? I guess to make better TV. I'll play along for the sake of my critique of the episode...)

Leanne's wedding and bridesmaid dresses were beautiful, but these photos are cropped, so although you get the idea of the "wave" design she was going for that fit in with her larger collection, you don't see that beautiful wedding dress! So please check it out in the video. I am hoping Leanne is the big winner. When Tim Gunn visited her, the wedding dress needed a lot of work. She took his advice and totally reworked it to mesh with the rest of her collection.
leannefinalep1.jpg

Jerell was declared the loser of this challenge with the designs below. When Tim Gunn visited Jerell's collection in the works, he advised Jerell to look at his design with an editing eye, and ditch some of the embellishments. Jerell didn't listen, and he should have. That headpiece alone was quite off-putting.
jerrellfinalep1.jpg

Kenley has been getting a lot of flak for her attitude. I think it was Michael Kors who said that if she was not self-taught, and had been through design school, she would be used to the critiquing process, and would not get as defensive. Tim was very impressed that Kenley painted her own fabric in an Alice in Wonderland inspired move. He was a little turned off by her use of ropes (especially around the neck of one garment) and asked if she had considered someone thinking that would remind them of a hanging. She said no, and that her father worked with tugboats, and that is why the ropes come into play in her designs. She also claims to love her wedding dress so much that she will get married in it. I will admit that she designed the damn cutest bridesmaid dress I've ever set eyes on! I love the playfullness and the poofiness of the skirt.
kenleyfinalepp1.jpg

Korto's collection is inspired by her ethnic background. She incorporated beadwork that she creates herself into her designs. I, for one, was not a fan of her champagne-colored wedding dress. There was too much going on; I thought it looked a bit lumpy, for lack of a better adjective & it did look more appropriate for the red carpet than a walk down the aisle. Her bridesmaid dress, conversely, was perfectly chic and simple. Okay, maybe it wasn't totally bridesmaidsy, but who really likes bridesmaid dresses anyway? This one could be worn to a party after the wedding! I don't know who made the rule that bridesmaid gowns are creations that should be very expensive and only worn once!

Auburn Montessori School Sponsors Online Auction to Raise Funds to Build a Natural Playground

G_Logo.jpg

Items auctioned include jewelry, antiques, riding, gym and music lessons, massages, Pilates classes, photo shoot, a personal recording session and more!

The Auburn Montessori School announced its first annual online auction. Open to everyone, the auction will run from October 15th to November 15th 2008. The auction will feature dozens of items including among many other things: Pilates, gym classes, in-home massages, gift baskets, gift certificates, babysitting, horseback riding lessons, music lessons, jewelry, antiques, handmade rugs and afghans, a photo shoot, a private music recital, and for aspiring artists, a private recording session in a music studio!

All proceeds generated by the auction will go towards the creation of a natural playground located on the school’s grounds. Connie Mercier, Auburn Montessori’s Director explains, “Encouraging children to respect the environment and appreciate nature’s beauty is at the core of the Montessori teaching philosophy. We are lucky that our school is located in a beautiful part of rural New Hampshire and it has been our dream for some time to create an outdoor, natural classroom and playground for our students.”

Christina Knickerbocker the principal architect of the auction and a parent of two students at Auburn Montessori, comments: “We considered the usual fund raising methods, but we knew we wanted to do more than sell candy or bake cookies. Unlike traditional live auctions, where the students’ parents are often the only bidders, the online silent auction will allow anyone, anywhere in the country, to bid on any item in the comfort of their own homes.”

Slavery Awareness Party on Saturday, October 25 at 7pm

The 10 Ladd Street Shops in downtown Portsmouth, Fa La Lo and Bead Shine, are joining forces to hold an "Awareness Party" at their shops on 10 Ladd Street in downtown Portsmouth. The purpose of their party is threefold: 1) to make people aware of the issue of modern day slavery across the world, 2) to offer for purchase products made by slavery survivors to help the survivors reach self sufficiency, and 3) to celebrate the strength of the human spirit that keeps people optimistic even when facing the most horrific of circumstances.

Awareness Parties are a staple of The Emancipation Network (TEN), whose goal is to end slavery in the world within the next twenty-five years. As they raise money for survivors and others who are at risk of slavery, the parties allow their attendees to know that they can make a difference in the world for women and children who would be victims of modern day slavery.

"The idea of a slavery awareness party is certainly ironic," says Liz Wright, co-owner of Fa La Lo, "but the idea joyously observes how human beings have hope even in the most dismal of situations. Additionally, we need to celebrate that we in the Seacoast area are in a position to help the world end slavery once and for all." Though most Americans believe slavery ended in the nineteenth-century, slavery is still a present evil. Found all across the world, including in the United States, slavery is particularly a problem in parts of Asia.

chartslavery.jpg

While most slaves are found in the sex-industry, slaves are also forced to work in fields, homes, mines, restaurant and many other workplaces. The not-for-profit organization Free the Slaves estimates that there are 27 million slaves in the world today, with 14,500 trafficked to the United States each year. Victims of slavery know that if they do not cooperate, they may lose their lives since the average cost of a slave in the world today is $90; life is cheap.

Bead Shine and Fa La Lo want to celebrate the sanctity of human life and help Seacoast residents do the same. Telling stories of people who overcame the horror of slavery, the "Awareness Party" will be a joyful opportunity for Seacoast area residents to join together with food and drink to learn about how we will overcome. The products made for survivors that will be available include handmade paper and notecards, elegant tee shirts, jewelry, home goods, and various women's bags. Everyone is invited. For more information, call Liz Wright at 603-431-0420 or contact Liz via email at fa.la.lo.of.portsmouth@gmail.com.

Denise Nelms wants to get inside your closet

sylist-web.jpg
Welcome to the world of Denise Nelms, founder of the blog www.style180online.com. Denise has my dream job – shopping and going through other people's closets. Denise is a personal stylist who teaches women how find their fabulous side with the right clothes, colors and styles that flatter their figure. Denise recently gave Runway Ready a very interesting look at the life of a wardrobe/fashion consultant.

Runway Ready: Denise, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Denise: I am an "empty nester" with two girls in college and a wonderful husband. I started modeling in Houston 15 years ago and later taught wardrobe development at a modeling school. I love fashion consulting because it gives me the privilege of helping people feel great about the way they look in their clothes. I also write a fashion column for Applaud magazine.

denise-header-web.jpg

Runway Ready: When did you first realize you wanted to be a stylist?

Denise: My passion for fashion started with my first Barbie doll! I would spend hours putting together complete ensembles for Barbie, Midge and Ken. Then in middle school I learned how to sew and couldn't get enough. By the time I got to college, I was sort of known for my fashion sense.

Runway Ready: How did Style180 get started? And how does it work?

Denise: People have always asked my advice about putting things together, where to shop, etc. But it wasn't until recently that I thought about turning my talents into a business. As a consultant, the first thing I do is sit down with my client and really get to know them. How do they spend their time? Do they like shopping or hate it? What do they need from me? Usually the next step is to go into their closet. This part is often fun for me but painful for the client! I look at everything – clothes, shoes, underwear, jewelry, purses – and get rid of anything that doesn't make them look fabulous. We do a body type and color analysis and then we go shopping. But I don't generally dress people – I teach people how to dress themselves in a way that's flattering for their body.

Runway Ready: Rachel Zoë or Philip Bloch?

Denise: Philip Bloch is unbelievably talented, but I think I relate more to Rachel because she is married and struggles with keeping the balance between work and home. Her tastes and mine are practically parallel, though I'm sure her budget is a lot bigger!

Runway Ready: Do you have a style philosophy?

Denise: I believe style should be a true reflection of the person you are inside. Are you fun, creative, outgoing? Or are you more serious, business-minded? Your wardrobe should reflect the things about you that you want the world to see.

Runway Ready: How do you help clients figure out what they want to say about themselves through fashion?

Denise: I ask probing questions about their existing wardrobe and why they choose to dress in that way. I talk a lot about first impressions and try to find out how they want to be perceived by the world. Looking in someone's closet can tell me a lot about their emotional condition and how they feel about themselves. Sometimes people get in a rut and don't realize it.

Runway Ready: Do you shop for clients?

Denise: I do shop for some of my clients. Many successful people do not have time to shop for themselves. I also do pre-shopping for busy clients who like to shop but want to save time. I shop ahead and pick out a few items. Then we meet at a designated time and the clothes are waiting for them in the dressing room. The client tries them on and together we determine which ones are keepers. But my favorite thing is coaching, where I go shopping with my client and teach them as we go.

Runway Ready: Who needs a stylist?

Denise: Anyone who hates to shop, gets frustrated or doesn't have time to shop. Also, anyone who feels they need to update their look. For example, college graduates; moms re-entering the work force; someone seeking a promotion; anyone who has lost weight, gained weight or had a baby; someone who's gotten divorced and is starting to date again; professionals who need a strong image; musicians and other stage performers; political figures; anyone who needs an ensemble for a special occasion.

Runway Ready: If you could select three fashion must-haves, what would you pick?

Denise: Right now it would be a great pair of trouser jeans; a cute, current trench coat/jacket in a flattering color; and a crisp white shirt (ruffles or bow optional). You can go just about anywhere with this ensemble.

Runway Ready: What is your typical day as a stylist?

Denise: I might start the day by going to a business networking meeting. Then I usually spend a couple of hours a day online at sites like Style.com or Piperlime.com doing research (or reading your Runway Ready). Many days are spent in stores and boutiques shopping for clients, introducing myself and just staying up-to-date on what's available. I also visit salons and photographers to see if they want to "partner" our services. I might spend the evening with a client weeding through closets, doing a color analysis or compiling a list of what they need to shop for. Or, I'll spend a couple of hours shopping with a client. If I'm not with a client, I've got a table set up at a business expo where I'm giving impromptu fashion advice to whomever stops by. Some weekends I spend time writing my fashion article for Applaud magazine.

Runway Ready: What do you want readers to know that I didn't ask?

Denise: Working with me is fun! I love to help people feel great about themselves and I like to have a good time. I don't try to impose my own style onto my clients. I work hard to keep their own style while bringing out the inner "diva" in everyone, even the men. I promise you'll learn a lot and feel great about investing the time to improve your image.

Project Runway: The Nature Challenge

Runway show starts at 1:00 minute mark:

NEXT EPISODE ON BRAVO TONIGHT WED., 10/8, 9:00PM EST
SEASON FINALE - PART ONE

((Twelfth in a series about Project Runway, Season 5 by Mary Salmon))

This episode of Project Runway brought us the designers' final challenge, but more importantly, it was to decide which designers would be showing at New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park. Surprise, surprise... of the four remaining contestants, none were kicked off this week. Don't get me wrong, I did not want to see Korto, Leanne, Jerrell, or especially my favorite, Kenley, leave, but they have done this before. Heidi tells the designers that they are all to design collections, but that only three designers will actually get to show at Bryant Park. The guest judge was designer Georgina Chapman, co-founder of Marchesa; she brought a great perspective with her comments about the designs, as Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, and Michael Kors have become so familiar with each designer that I believe it colors their opinions this late in the season. It was really hard to decide between the four designers left standing, and I am excited to see all four final collections.

Jerrell was the winner of the nature challenge. The designers took digital cameras out into nature at the New York Botanical Garden, but then had to choose just one photo to work from before they left for Mood, to buy their fabric. The designers were tasked with creating an evening gown inspired by their photograph. Jerrell's design mixed a low-cut bustier with a long, layered skirt. The colors he chose worked very well together - a shiny brown with a hint of purple with crimson red and emerald green. Winning this challenge, unfortunately for Jerrell, didn't really help him, as he still has to compete to be part of Fashion Week.

Leanne's look was very "Leanne." Soft, sweet, subtle... I know I said (repeatedly) that Kenley is my favorite, but that has to do with her personality and style. Over the course of this season, Leanne has become my favorite designer, and I do hope she wins it all. I loved the lavender fabric she worked with, creating an almost Grecian goddess dress with a lovely asymmetrical detail over one shoulder, leading down to a symmetrical pattern on the dress, ending around the hips, but in a flattering way. It may not be the best evening dress for someone with large hips, but for a body type like my own, where I really don't have any hips to speak of, it would help accentuate where I could perhaps be a bit curvier, so it would work for me, and I loved it. Jerrell's was just a bit too low-cut for my taste, but beautiful, nonetheless.

thetoptwodesignsb4fw.jpg
(Left - Right: Jerrell's winning design, Leanne's design)

Korto and Kenley were the losers on this one. Kenley at least tried to create something different, less retro, but the judges thought it looked more like a mermaid dress with scales than the "leaves" look she was trying to achieve. I didn't like the belt, I didn't like the racerback, and I didn't like the design altogether. I can't wait to see her collection, though! The judges were not thrilled with Kenley's attitude - I'll include the clip at the end of the entry. Korto was accused of designing a beauty pageant dress. In Korto's defense, I think some of the detailed construction was not visible to the judges on the runway. Bottom line, these judges want to see what both Kenley and Korto will design for a collection. They also seem to wonder if a collection by Jerrell will be disjointed. Go Leanne!

Treating Your Legs To Tights

ohlala.jpg

Tights have always been one of my favorite accessories. I started collecting tights with interesting patterns when I was living in London in 1996, and although my tastes are a bit more "mature" than they were when I was twenty years-old cavorting around Camden Town in purple and black striped tights, my fetish lives on. Luckily for me, this season tights and leggings are on fashion's "must-have" list.

I am not writing about leggings; I am writing about tights, specifically, tights with feet. Leggings are "in" right now, too, don't get me wrong, but I don't wear them, and so I will not write about them, but I do know Lindsay Lohan is selling them, and her collection sold out all over L.A. as soon as it hit the shelves. intuition.com is also supposed to be selling Lindsay's leggings "exclusively," but it just says they are out of stock of the "Mr. President" style with built-in knee pads. The line is called 6126, an homage to Marilyn Monroe, born on that date.

I recently bought a pair of footless tights (could it be my gateway purchase back to leggings?), but I've not yet felt quite adventurous enough to break them out. They are a fairly bright purple, so I'll need to create an outfit around them. A few years ago I spoiled myself by going on a bit of a Wolford kick. There simply is no finer hosiery. I love wearing my bright blue Wolford tights, even though they have seen better days, and are a bit eaten up around the ankles from last year's boots rubbing against them; until they run, they stay in the drawer. They make me feel like I should be hanging with the Austin Powers crowd; they have that swingin' 60's vibe when paired with the right skirt and top, even if I'm just headed to the office.

coloredtights360.jpg

You can make a statement with your legs by wearing bold colors and cool, interesting patterns & textures, and there's no need to break the bank to do so, but I can't guarantee that the bargain tights will stand the test of time. Then again, I also can't guarantee I won't run the $80 pair of tights the first time I wear them. And, yes, there should be a law against tights being that expensive! I found bright red and bright purple pairs of tights at J.C. Penney at the Fox Run Mall in Newington, NH for $4.00 each. I also bought several pair of tights at Kohl's - they are "Simply Vera" brand by Vera Wang. They were on sale for about 30% off; I believe just under $8 apiece. Today I wore a black textured pair, and I do love the feeling of a new pair of tights. There are lots of sales on tights going on right now in many stores so they can clear out their old styles and bring in the new ones for the impending winter months. The perfect time to buy!

There are, of course, also many places on the web where you can find fun tights. A few sites I liked, but have not ordered from, so I can't speak about their customer service, are: Foot Traffic; Garnet Hill (for kids - there are A LOT of sites for kids' tights, but these were the cutest); and Bare Necessities, which does sell Wolford, Hue, Spanx, and DKNY hosiery, among others.

Parkers beware, someone could be watching you…

binacular-web.jpg

Portsmouth's parking crunch, well known to visitors, is even crunchier for folks who live downtown.

Yes, there is the garage, but did you know the permit fee is a $100 per month (two-car family, double it). My husband and I tried the garage pass for a while, but still found ourselves paying for the occasional – inevitable – parking ticket.

So we opted to stop using the garage and take our chances with street parking. We get off work after most stores and banks close, making parking a wee bit less impossible to find.

We've been towed in the snow and once even in summer. Our routine involves a daily game of parking roulette, just trying to beat the odds. We burn as much gas as an Indy driver, sometimes referring to our endless laps around the city as the "Portsmouth 500."

Those "spots" in front of our building? Risky. Is it OK to park in that loading zone after 7 p.m.? Or will you get ticketed at 7:01 the next morning? And don't sleep in on Saturday or it'll cost you.

Living here for the last five years, I've gotten pretty savvy about the art of downtown parking. It's a timing thing, but it can save you money if you do it right. I usually pay parking meters on Saturdays until noon, then move my car to a free space at a local bank parking lot.

Last Saturday I set out for my usual jog around town, then went to move my car to the bank. But I was a little early and noticed when I pulled in that there was still about 20 minutes before closing time.

Although a little uneasy about it, I thought "close enough." But when I exited my car, I noticed a suspicious-looking black sports car backed into a parking spot with a female behind the wheel.

I sensed this person watching me and began to feel a bit paranoid. Very stealth-like, I pretended to walk toward the bank, like a "normal banking customer" – you know, just doing a little "banking business," nothing for Secret Agent 99 to be concerned about. (I think the theme from "Mission Impossible" was playing in my head.)

I walked through the bank and circled around to the post office to pick up some mail.

I was still a little suspicious of the black sports car, so I circled back to the bank to see if it was still there. Yep. Now I was extremely nervous. I really didn't want to pay for another buck-twenty tow. (Hey, I could buy a super-cute outfit for that kind of dough). So I stood at the corner for a bit, just watching – my car and the clock – hoping the bank would close before there was any trouble.

All I can say, people, is trust your instincts. My curiosity finally got the best of me, so I decided to approach the car and ask the young lady if she was on duty. Sure enough, she'd been hired to keep an eagle eye on one of the bank's most precious assets – its parking lot.

She explained that she monitors the coming and goings, jotting down vehicles' license plates and arranging a tow for blatant non-bank customers or repeat offenders.

She said she's lenient if you're just running into Breaking New Grounds for a quick coffee. I thought that was nice. I told her my sad parking story, explaining that I usually try not to park at the bank until after hours, however, this day I'd finished my jog a little early.

She was friendly, so I did what any shopping/fashion reporter would do and interviewed her. To protect her identity we'll call her Katy.

Katy told me she works for a firm out of Boston that is hired by companies around the world to monitor parking lots. Who knew?

Runway Ready: How did you get involved in this type of work?

Katy: The Portsmouth Herald (job listings), of course.

(I swear I didn't pay her to say that).

Runway Ready: Describe a day at your job?

Katy: Who hasn't dreamed of sitting in their lawn chair on a beautiful sunny day, meeting community members while stealthily watching for illegal parkers?

Runway Ready: Do you get bored just sitting in your car watching vehicles?

Katy: Bored? My mother always said only boring people get bored.

Runway Ready: Has anyone spotted you like I did? What do they usually say to you?

Katy: I've gotten all kinds of questions like, "Are you a Secret Agent? Are you in an unmarked police car? And wow, you are in the parking lot every time I come to the bank".

Runway Ready: Has anyone caught you having them towed or do you stay incognito?

Katy: Yes I actually had someone come running out just as their car was being pulled onto the flatbed to be towed.

Runway Ready: Do you feel bad for having people towed?

Katy: I do if it is someone from out of town that really doesn't know better, but not if it is a repeat offender.

Runway Ready: Have you ever been towed?

Katy: Yes and it stunk

Runway Ready: I'm sure you must see other interesting things that go on while you're sitting in the parking lot waiting for scofflaws. Any good gossip?

Katy: What happens in the parking lot stays in the parking lot! (Laughter)

Runway Ready: Aw, c'mon. How long do you see yourself doing this job?

Katy: Only God knows.

Runway Ready: Is there anything I didn't ask that you want readers to know?

Katy: It's really nice when people don't abuse the privilege of parking here.

Runway Ready: Thanks for not towing me, Katy:)

Moral of the story: Make sure the bank is closed or it will cost you a big headache and even more money.
