Fall Fashions Offer Warmth and Style

1009-rr-glitz-center.jpg
As autumn leaves drift by our windows, we find ourselves excited to once again add boots, hats, scarves and bright jewel-toned colors to our wardrobes. Yet, in this economy, many of us find ourselves on a tight budget and scaling back our purchases. Here at Puttin' on the Glitz, we know that accessories put a whole new spin on old classics. Fall jewels and accessories make last year's coat new again; scarves, hats and gloves will update your look while adding variety and versatility to your wardrobe. A few key pieces will update your wardrobe for the season while keeping your budget in check.

1009-rr-Assiah_red_necklace2.gif

I myself have been joyfully reconnecting with my fall and winter wear, putting away summer for another year and reaching for some old favorites. While quite serviceable, my own fall wardrobe needs some updating to keep it looking fresh and new. Indulging in the role of customer within my own shop, I thought I would share my personal shopping list with you:

• A new scarf, really two. One for a “pop of color” to accent all my dark clothes and make them look new – something green (Red Chair Studio $77) to show off my eyes and match the one new sweater I purchased for the season. The other is silk crepe with lots of gold, black and grey that will look good with most of my wardrobe (Suraj $59).

• A pair of new gloves....maybe hot pink ($39) to match the lining of last year's coat or a long pair in chocolate ruched velvet (Shell Game $49) that will warm my arms in 3/4 length sleeves.

• A big brooch (Detra Kay $180) that will play many roles; dressing up a lapel, holding a pashmina in place, or added to the side of a hat for evenings out...a huge splurge for sure, but so versatile that I can even clip it to the side of my boot when I wear a LBD. Instant glamour.

1009-rr-glitz-33.jpg

I definitely want a couple of hats...one for the fall that is a cap (Asian Eye $42) or a cloche (Toucan $72), and another of boiled wool or cashmere to tuck over my ears, keeping them warm and cozy (Seeberger from Germany or Millie & Cohoe from Canada. $150).
1009-rr-glitz-22.jpg
Another must for updating a fall wardrobe is The Handbag. Our newest line, Big Buddha, is the front-runner in affordable fashion handbags for women, featuring rich, saturated colors in a variety of styles that are eco-friendly, stylish, fun and won't break the bank. Big Buddha bags work for women of any age – with styles from polished and classic to playful and sassy.

Fall Flowerboxes

1009-rr-flower_box.jpg

We all love the sprays of colorful flowers that bloom in spring and summer, but don’t let fall weather be an excuse to leave your flowerboxes empty. When layered with bold, burnt autumn hues, your flowerboxes can instantly take on a whole new look. Gather your materials and fill your box in five simple steps:

Step 1 — Ditch the Dirty Work: After you dispose of last season’s blossoms, leave the soil in the bottom of the box—even if somewhat dry, the soil provides a sturdy base for the new items you’ll insert into your flowerbox.

Step 2 — Work with Wire: Next, cut a sheet of chicken wire to fit the top of your flowerbox, then fasten in place with a staple gun—the holes are perfect for inserting stemmed items, creating an arrangement that is lush and proportionate.

Step 3 — Tall Pieces First: Create a frame for the rest of your items by inserting long materials like wispy sticks, twigs, bark, hay and dried grass along the back and sides of your flowerbox. This will add dramatic height and depth to your arrangement—plus, it lends structure and sturdiness to the look.

Step 4 — Showcase Comes Second: Begin to fill in the center of your flowerbox with bold, colorful items, like miniature pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, even fall fruits like apples and pears. Arrange them casually, mixing and matching and letting pieces rest atop one another in pairs or trios.

Step 5 — Finally, Fill it All in: To perfect your look, tuck items like dried leaves, flowers or raffia in between your showcased items. You can also bundle together leftover materials from step 3 to help fill in gaps. This added texture lends a professional polish to your flowerbox—a true harvest for the eyes!

Tip: If you don’t already have flowerboxes attached to your house, consider purchasing some from your local garden store and display them on your porch, patio, mantel or an outdoor bench. Check out more great ideas at homemadesimple.com

Back-To-School Trends

rr0809clue-top-web.jpg

First impressions are everything! And we girls know that when it’s time to head back to school, we must focus all our priorities on our education, preparing our minds to drink up the technology of our instructors -- basking in the pool of knowledge to stimulate our intellectual state of mind.

Nah! Who am I kidding? It’s all about intelligent theories of fashion. This means following the latest trends and, sad but true, keeping up with the in-crowd. So what are the must-have back-to-school trends of today’s teens?

rr0809kirsten-2.jpg

Most are taking cues from popular young celebrities. Take "Twilight" star, Kristen Stewart -- she has that London street chic (and perhaps sometimes questionable) fashion statement. But the teens love it. Her trendy slogan T’s are skillfully layered, with the infamous skinny jean and must-have skater boy Converse sneakers. She totally dressed down her embroidered Yigal Azrouël taffeta dress with a pair of Converse at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. (Maybe pull it back a bit Kristen. Sometimes people try too hard to look cool.)

Another teen icon is Hayden Panettiere, winner of two Teen Choice awards -- one for Choice TV Actress in an Action-Adventure Series ("Heroes") and another for Choice Celebrity Activist. Hayden knows all about being the popular girl and "what’s up" when it comes to hot trends. In the picture below, Hayden is sporting a black trench coat, jeans and a super cool pair of boots that I’d like to get my hands on.

rr0809hay-blake-web.jpg

And I know Runway Ready colleague Mary Salmon will back me up on this one, "Gossip Girl" Blake Lively – a trend starter who totally keeps fashion interesting with the variety of styles she puts out there. She's seen here strutting her traditional schoolgirl ensemble with a Lepore cardigan, over-the-knee tights and a Botkier bag. My niece says she’s da bomb.

Many teen girls unleash their inner rocker chick these days by following the styles of Ashlee Simpson -- shown here with the tapered skinny jean, striped vest and totally glammed up with a red-hot pair of stilettos. (I wouldn’t advise cruising the halls all day in these bad boys; throw a backup pair of flats in your back-pack.)

rr0809avil-new.jpg

Next up, punk rocker Avril Lavigne. She launched a line that will "fo sho" step up your game at school with her Abbey Dawn gear. Also check out her new perfume Black Star -- I hear it’s a big hit among teens. Thankfully, this line is inexpensive for teens on a budget; see Avril’s line at Kohl's.

Back-To-School Basics at T.J. Maxx

0709-tjx-bts.jpg

This year, value is on every parent’s mind as they think about back-to-school shopping. Parents can update their children’s wardrobes with trendy basics that will stretch throughout the year, and not break the bank! Hoodies, jeans, graphic tees and even backpacks that feature the trends are the must-have “basics” for students across the country. This back to school season, while customers are shopping for the basics for their children at T.J. Maxx, they can help children in need in the United States as well simply by purchasing a limited edition reusable shopping bag. The bags are designed with Save the Children original children’s artwork, and for each bag purchased, T.J. Maxx will donate one basic item such as; socks, underwear and backpacks to Save the Children’s U.S. Programs, up to 25,000 items.

“With a focus on updating the basics for their child at an off-price retailer like T.J. Maxx, parents are able to give their children the trends they crave in pieces that will last all year long,” said T.J. Maxx Style expert, Sonya Cosentini. “We are also excited that this year, we are able to provide those same back to school essentials to children in need right here in the U.S. through our partnership with Save the Children.”

Skip the mall and department stores for back-to-school shopping and head to T.J. Maxx first where budgets will stretch much further. You’ll find the same on-trend, in-season and first quality merchandise as department and specialty stores, but for much less. In fact, if you compare price tags, you’ll see that T.J.Maxx prices are up to 60% less for the same items!

The best thing about the “basics” or must-haves this season, is they can be combined to create multiple looks, or worn as separates to update a child’s current wardrobe. There are five must-have “basics” that every student should stock their closet with to be ready to walk the hallways in this year:

0709-tjx-t.jpg

Denim

From elementary through high school, denim is a staple in every student’s wardrobe. This year, there are many different styles, colors and washes to choose from. Girls can look for colored skinny leg jeans with sparkly belts and crimping, while boys will request deconstructed worn styles with slight tearing and back pocket detail. The hottest trend this school year for girls – pairing denim with a belted, buffalo plaid tunic or graphic tee.

T-Shirts

Not-so-basic tees are customized this year. Little girls express themselves with peace signs, butterflies and hearts on sublimation and watercolor patterns. Boys will don a ‘rocker’ look with skulls and vintage rock band logos as they hit the books. Worn over jeans, leggings, or shorts, t-shirts are a great way to express their individual style, and are key layering pieces as the colder months approach. Girls will also spice up a tee with a tie-dye or printed scarf.

Athletic Wear

From the sports field to the classroom, athletic wear is on the rise. Athletic pants, zip up jackets and logo t-shirts are top requests from boys. Girls looks are feminine in colorful embellished fleece and French terry sets for the ultimate in comfort and style for back to school.

Hoodies

Hooded sweatshirts are not just for keeping warm anymore – they are a basic fashion statement. This year, hoodies come in various colors and styles – complete with logos, embellishments, and even athletic and beach-y looks. Girls can add a zip-up hoodie over a long graphic tee and leggings to complete the look.

Backpacks

0709-tjx-bkpks.jpg

A staple back-to-school accessory, backpacks are the must-have for every student. Styles range from the traditional backpack to the messenger style bag. For the little ones, popular styles will feature favorite characters from Cars and Dora the Explorer to princesses and super heroes. And, once the backpack has been picked out, T.J. Maxx has all of the necessary school supplies to fill it. Folders calendars, pencil sets and rulers, T.J. Maxx is your one-stop shop for a successful school year!

0709-r-bag.jpg

Beyond the basics, little girls can look for a variety of dresses in buffalo plaids and floral patterns. Flannel legging sets with bows, patterns and sparkle will warm her up as the weather gets colder. By shopping at T.J. Maxx this season, you can help send children in need in the United States back-to-school with the basics they need. Beginning August 3rd, special edition reusable shopping bags featuring Save the Children children’s artwork will be available for purchase at T.J. Maxx for $0.99. For each bag purchased, T.J. Maxx will donate one basic item, such as socks, underwear and backpacks, to Save the Children’s U.S. Programs (up to 25,000 items, while supplies last).

Levi's "Prisoner" Fashion Line/ Madeline's Daughter Events

0709levis-confict-style.jpg

If you are into black and white stripes, this could be the line for you! I personally find it rather bizarre that Levi Strauss & Co. would want to glorify prison life. Maybe they want to stir up some controversy...

Levi Strauss & Co. invented blue jeans, and has driven their evolution from workwear to everywhere. Levi’s® Vintage Clothing reaches into the rich history of denim to reveal and relive pieces of the past. For Fall/Winter 09, with the theme of Inside/Out, Levi’s® explores the cold, hard life of the convict. (Interesting choice...)

This season’s collection has been inspired by the uniform of the prisoner. After black and white stripes, and before orange jumpsuits, denim was the preferred fabric for institutional life. During the 1920s and 1930s, overalls, white vests and T-shirts, sack coats, and chambray shirts all found their way inside. The Inside/Out collection draws on the experiences, history, and struggles of serving time, while keeping an eye on the freedom beyond the walls.

Macy's Fall 2009 Fashion Preview

macys-fall-2009-0609.jpg
Anna Sui; Twinkle knit top, BCBG shirt, I•N•C LEGGINGS; Nanette Lepore

In a world so divided, fashion comes together to reunite and reinvent. Acceptance of all elements of thought, feeling and personal histories are apparent in this trend. With a blending of all fashion concepts, anything goes. Merging schools of thought provides fashion with a fresh point of view, as seen through the fusing of infinite color, and a wealth of pattern and texture. Self-expression is evident, making a statement about the future of fashion in an ever-changing world. With a mélange of berries, plaids and folk-rock chic fashions, an abundance of options come together in a stylish melting pot.

Take a bite out of life with the wide spectrum of hues from the berry family. With a mixture of sweet and tart, apparel has a fresh flavor for fall. Emerging with a sense of femininity, berries have replaced the gloomy greys and blacks of the season. Get sweet on all these luscious, freshly picked shades that include eggplant, wine, blackberry, burgundy, plum, beet, raisin and raspberry. Purple has emerged as the color of choice for knit tops with volume, blouses, shifts and sheaths, trench coats and tailored suiting. Prints and fabrics like lace, wool tweeds, velvet, jacquards and paisleys play an important part, adding depth to this fashion landscape.

With its roots in traditional folk elements stemming from Eastern Europe, City Folk fuses luxury elements and a rock-chic attitude. All pieces follow a natural trend with earthy hues, ethnic textures, such as paisleys and mosaic patterns, and nature-mimicking prints. Macrame brocades, lace and crochet mixed with embroidery, tassels and mongolian lamb fur, add a touch of luxury to this look. A sense of balance is necessary, and achieved by layering and mixing colors, patterns, and materials, while keeping an overall balance in mind. Standout silhouettes include tie-neck ruffled blouses, vintage denim, peasant tunics, jumpers, maxis, minis and vests.

Prep school plaid passes the test as fall brings back the reinvented classic in unexpected ways. From macro to mini, and pink to purple, mixing of scale and color puts a spin on the traditional tartan. With a touch of modern glamour, crossing the line from your ordinary flannel shirt into capes, trench coats, pantsuits and tie-neck ruffle blouses is effortless.

Brown & Rihanna Sex Tape/ Budget Decorating/ H&M Spring Fashions

Chris Brown to Leak Rihanna Sex Tape...

deb-032409sex_tape.jpg

Rihanna reportedly fears that boyfriend Chris Brown is set to leak a sex tape. Sources say the singer, who was allegedly beat by Brown during an argument last month, will be “mortified” if Brown leaks footage of them in bed.

“They’ve had tons of crazy nights in bed, and Chris has recorded many of them…They both have very kinky sides. Rihanna has no issues with her sexuality. But she’d be mortified if her friends and family found this out!” says a source.

Rihanna and Brown are “taking a break” from their relationship following their domestic violence case and reconciliation.

Brown, 19, was arrested in February for allegedly beating Rihanna. He has been charged with felony assault and making criminal threats. The pair spent three weeks apart following the incident but then reconciled. Sources say Rihanna and Brown are now taking a break while they get their lives back in order.

Decorating Tips on a Budget

Take your apartment from bland to beautiful using hand-me-down furniture, flea-market finds, and a little creative thinking.

deb032409room_fireplace.jpg

Just because you’re renting doesn’t mean you can't put your stamp on a space. To make her first apartment feel like a comfortable home, Caroline Barnhill gave her secondhand furniture new life by using a little artistic vision.

deb032409room_side_view.jpg

Create a Focal Point

The apartment's square white rooms presented a problem when it came to arranging furniture. To give the living room some direction, it needed a focal point. A vintage mantel -- a piece of architectural salvage purchased at a flea market -- helped dictate the furniture layout.

Because the mantel needed a bit more presence, Caroline stacked about 250 bricks behind it to create a faux hearth. A piece of plastic painting cloth underneath protects the carpet from being discolored by the bricks. All can be easily disassembled when she moves. Source: myhomeideas.com

Brights and Whites at H&M Kids for Spring

Fashion is made easy for kids this season with a collection of all their favorite pieces to mix and match. There is everything from romantic pieces to sports inspired classics. A bright and happy color range complemented by soft pastels and fresh whites emphasize the optimistic feeling.

As in H&M's grown up collection, the look is kind of well-dressed and coordinated. For kids, you'll see a mix of romantic and classic styles with sports inspired pieces, denim, T-shirts and lots of fun accessories, according to H&M’s head of design Ann Sofie Johansson.

deb032409hm-top.jpg

For girls the focus is on feminine blouses with pin tucks or crocheted details, little cardigans, skirts with embroidery, tank tops, frilly skirts and dresses, pointelle jersey tops and nostalgic Henley styles. White, bright colored or washed and worn denim jeans, chinos and T-shirts are there to mix and match. And accessories include bright socks, ballerina flats, jewelry, and sunglasses.

deb032409hm-kides.jpg
In the boys’ department, there are favorite basics like cotton shirts, polo shirts, plain, striped or front print T-shirts, to wear with washed and worn look jeans, white jeans, chinos or shorts. The jeans jacket is a classic, and the super cool fake leather lumber is combined with jeans and T-shirt. Accessories are caps, sunglasses, scarves, canvas- or studded belts, fun socks, sneakers. Visit H&M and check out these new styles!

Philosophy Cinnamon Buns 3-in-1

cinnamon_buns_shamp.jpg

We all want a shampoo for its main functions, to clean scalp, hair and make the hair smooth, soft, shiny and of course, manageability. That’s just a no-brainer. But what if you have all that and them some, such as a 3-in-1 shampoo, shower gel & bubble bath!

Today, I’m all about another product from the Philosophy line. This yummy 3-in-one cinnamon buns Philosophy shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath, that is simply heavily.

Like in last month's review of the Cinnamon buns lip gloss, I love the whole experience captured with the delicious aroma of freshly baked cinnamon buns in a 16 oz. shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath.

When you lather up, you will be reminded of the warm, decadent smell of cinnamon buns radiating from the kitchen. There’s nothing like the sweet smell of holiday goodies to warm your heart and make you feel right at home all year round!

I have a few more reasons to like it: it’s perfect for travel, your bathroom is not overtaken by products, and the room is left with a nice scent after bathing or showering with it. You can find this product and more at Making Faces, located at 65 Bow Street in downtown Portsmouth.

Victoria Beckham’s dVb Line Dropped

posh-victoria_jea.jpg

Victoria Beckham second dress collection may be getting great reviews but her denim clothing line has just been dropped. Giving a jolt to Victoria Beckham’s fashion ambitions, American department store Saks Fifth Avenue has dropped her fembot denim line, dVb.

Henri Bendel and Kitson already dropped Posh earlier this year because of poor sales of her denim line. And now sources have revealed that Saks, which first carried her jeans, decided to give a miss to soccer stud David Beckham’s wife after she sold her upscale designer line exclusively to Bergdorf Goodman.

"Saks dropped Victoria Beckham's line and will not reorder more,” the New York Post quoted the source as saying. The insider further added: "They were offended when she sold her dress line to Bergdorf's and not to Saks, even though Saks launched her denim line in their New York store. Bergdorf never carried her jeans, but they got her designer line anyway.”

However, canceling Posh's denim line should not have a big impact on Saks. "Nobody wanted to buy 300 dollars jeans from someone who is not a trained designer," said the source. "At this time there is no Victoria Beckham product stocked at Saks, but we continue to work closely with several leading stores and many independent US fashion retailers,” said a rep for Beckham.

Meanwhile, Saks, Henri Bendel and Kitson all refused to comment on the issue

NY Fashion Week Trends

It's almost time to dish about the London & Milan Fashion Week trends, but we never did discuss New York Fashion Week. So albeit fashionably late, here is the lowdown on the most prevalent trends we'll be seeing this fall and winter, as well as a sampling of looks from a number of top designers.

The lines in these new designs are very sharp and tailored. Marc Jacobs’ has taken his inspiration from the 1980s. (Can't we ever let go of those godforsaken wide-shoulders? Not all trends need be recycled!). Preen went with a modern psychedelic theme, of which I am a fan. (I'm a fan of most designers who remind me of Emilio Pucci in any way, shape, form, or pattern!)

preen-090225_toplooks.jpg
Preen

It's fabulous to see some great suits on the runway. I admit, I own more suits than I need, but there is something about a suit that helps put me in the right frame of mind for work. (Side note - If you are looking to buy a suit on a more affordable scale - The Limited has a suit called "The Travel Suit" that can be put in the washer and the dryer & does not wrinkle. I think I have three of them - they are truly awesome.)

dk-090225_toplooks.jpg
Donna Karan

Even the fashion industry is taking a cue from the economy; it's a time when we all need to buckle down and work hard if we're ever going to get out of this mess! Suits shown in flannel, wool, cashmere, jersey, tweed, and even lamé are quintessential, elegant professional garments. High-waist belts are in vogue again, mostly thin, leather, and many with embellishments. This fall and winter will also be a time to pass over your skirts for pants - wide or skinny, pleated or straight, even metallic. (In my humble opinion, there's a place for skirts in every season, but I'm reporting the trends as I see them. I'm still not going to leave my blue velvet skirt in the closet for all of 2009.)

rl-090225_toplooks.jpg
Ralph Lauren

Many designers opted for a neutral color palette; I was surprised by the number of shows almost completely filled with black. Conversely, we also saw a lot of neons, especially in Michael Kors', Narciso Rodriguez's, and Oscar de la Renta's collections. An overwhelming amount of designers contrasted their neutrals with metallics. Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, and Ralph Lauren really hit on this. For outerwear, it would appear that the tailored coat is out and the oversized cocoon is in. Most jackets had a round silhouette as opposed to being formfitting. (The look is not altogether unflattering; for proof check out the shows of DKNY, Proenza Schouler, and Derek Lam.)

kors-090225_toplooks.jpg
Michael Kors

Welcome back, Asymmetry. The one-shouldered dress is back with a vengeance; it's everywhere! We saw variations of this trend with a little more length on one side, off-centered slits, or strange collars. Thank god we didn't see an abundance of 80s-inspired asymmetrical hairstyles!

oscardelarenta-090225_toplooks.jpg
Oscar de la Renta

There were also a number of designs with holes and cut-outs. We saw a bare shoulder appear, leggings with cuts-out throughout, or a felted wool dress with holes. There were some designers who allowed for a surprise of skin to show through, really mixing up collections that are traditionally more tailored and stuffy. I'm happy to report that colored tights were back in full force with some added details such as blocks of color, animal and psychedelic prints, and even rhinestones added to tights. (Bedazzle me!) If you hesitated on the colored tights trend last year, just take a look at Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl for inspiration. You can find this fun trend in shows from Zac Posen, Diane von Furstenberg, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

wang-090225_toplooks.jpg
Alexander Wang

If you have been holding your breath waiting for an opportunity to break out your leather pants - this fall is your lucky season! Leather was big on the catwalks and took the form of jackets, pants, skirts, and even shorts. I appreciated the use of leather in the collections of William Rast, Derek Lam, and Michael Kors.

lam-090225_toplooks.jpg
Derek Lam

Many critics anticipated designers would tone it down for this Fashion Week, due to the economy. How wrong they were! The color palette is electric with neon colors. Fuchsia popped up at Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors, while Narciso Rodriguez and Bensoni both used lime green earlier in the week. But Marc Jacobs took it one step further by continuing his Stephen Sprouse eighties inspiration with an entire neon collection that included hot-pink hooded jackets, lemon capes, and metallic cerulean minis. These colors seemed especially refreshing in a season otherwise filled with black, gray, and beige.

Marc Jacobs

I must pause here to give props to Jessica Stroup, an actress on the new 90210. Below on the left she is at the People's Choice Awards in a dress that was anticipating the asymmetrical trend to come. I also normally hate bows on dresses, a trend which is unfortunately back, but this dress actually makes that idea work. Even more impressive, her neon citron minidress on the right (with a cut-out!) that she was photographed wearing during Fashion Week; I adore the peek of hot pink on the cuffs of the structured gray jacket that complements her amazing heels.

stroup-stylin.jpg

Other looks we may being seeing a lot more of include the little white dress, belted fur (or fake-fur) vests, butterfly prints, op-art prints, bondage inspired dresses, laser cut patterns and broderie anglaise in lieu of lace, sheer and opaque fabric combinations, tiered ruffles creating a sea-like flowing effect, and bows adorning dresses.

Jason Wu

Jason Wu is the designer who created Michelle Obama’s gown for the Inaugural Party. (But if you are reading a fashion blog, you probably already knew that...) His career has only been going up since then and the popularity to being at his show was very high. His collection is one of the most wearable of the shows I have viewed. Each and every piece is incredible. The up-and-coming designer showed a youthful collection of mostly bright separates and gowns. The standout black-and-white tapestry prints are sure to be snatched up quickly by the Young Hollywood set, including Leighton Meester (aka Blair Waldorf, one of my personal style icons) who sat front row at Wu's show.

narcisso-090225_toplooks.jpg
Narciso Rodriguez

Rodriguez’s designs have always been body-conscious and sensual, but not overtly sexual; he constructs curve-hugging silhouettes, but this season they take on a more futuristic vibe, which I am loving. He is another favorite of the first lady, and I will give credit where it is due... I will be the first to admit, I am not always a fan of Michelle Obama's style, but I have seen a marked improvement in her wardrobe recently. The White House has released the official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. It was taken in the Blue Room of the White House by photographer Joyce N. Boghosian. Obama opted to wear a black sleeveless dress by Michael Kors with pearls. Her choice is classy, simple yet elegant - thumbs up!

When Mary Salmon is not fantasizing about the day she can afford some of the clothing featured in this entry, she is looking at pretty pictures and video clips of said clothing. (Sigh)

Product Review: Kai Fragrance/ Chloë Sevigny's Fashion Line

kai-frag-blog.jpg

"Breathe in the beauty of kai, and experience the light and soothing scent of today's most sought-after fragrance." Beauty lies in the simplest and purest of things. kai brings this idea to life by using exotic fragrance and natural essences in our light and intoxicating scent. kai captures the irresistible fragrance of the tropics in a full line of perfume oil and body products. breathe in the beauty of kai, and experience today's most sought-after fragrance.

Gaye Straza spent her youth vacationing in Hawaii, and always wanted to capture the island’s fragrance. Years later, after opening the first exclusively upscale women’s boutique in Malibu, California, she developed the kai fragrance and sold it at her boutique. When Straza sold the boutique in 1999, there was so much demand for the fragrance that she decided to continue the fragrance line as a separate company.

kai is available at Making Faces in Portsmouth, located at 65 bow street (603-427-5455). Annie was nice enough to send Runway Ready some samples to review, and I tested this fragrance. The notes are gardenia, jasmine, tuberose, and lily. (I should mention that I'm probably not the best person to review fragrances, as I have been wearing the same two for around 13 years, but I will be open-minded.) Initially, the scent is very strong - to the point where I was sure I was not going to be a fan - but the sharp green scents fade and you are left with a soft, light, non-offensive floral (I think it's almost a musky floral) scent. I generally cannot stand anything that smells too flowery. A touch of rose water now and then, okay, but I am very picky when it comes to floral scents. I guess I prefer food scents - like pomegranate or vanilla. kai, however, seems to be a floral scent that even I can wear. It claims that it smells different on everyone (as I think most perfumes do), but all that matters is that I like the way it smells on me. I find it to be feminine and sophisticated. It is warm enough to worn in the winter, but bright enough to also be a summer fragrance.

Today, kai is sold at exclusive boutiques and spas all over the world, with many devotees, including Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Naomi Watts and others, including the list below.

kate2eo.jpg

kai-lovers-celebs.jpg

The only complaints about the scent that I have read from some other reviewers are 1) The the scent is so light someone would have to be right next to you to smell it. and 2) It's too expensive.

On this first complaint, I don't know what to tell you. There are still a few poeple who complain it's too strong. (Maybe it just doesn't smell quite right on those people...) Overwhelmingly, most people agree that this a a great, light scent. I would suggest trying out both the spray and lotion, to determine which holds the scent longest for you, if that is a concern. My sample seems to be giving me just the right amount of fragrance, but I think for me it will be more of a Monday - Friday perfume; I may need something more wild for the weekend.

Regarding the price, the people who love kai, really love it. One reviewer advises, "don't be put off by the price of this small bottle. it's loaded. all it takes is one swish of the roller ball on the wrist or neck and you'll smell like swanky fields of soft gardenia for blooming hours to come. mmmmmmm, a fave! " (The roller ball style seems to be a favorite across the board. It's a tiny roll-on oil bottle that fits perfectly in a purse for easy travel.) I have also read from many users that a little bottle lasts a long time. How long is "a long time"? Well, I guess you'll have to buy a bottle & let me know!

Chloë Sevigny's "Gay Lumberjack" Fashion Line

chloe-sevigny02.jpg

“The references are all over the map,” said an unapologetic Chloë Sevigny, chatting about her latest collaboration with Opening Ceremony — a unisex collection she unveiled during London Fashion Week. The line, which she showed Sunday at the Double Club, was a “slight homage” to one of her favorite designers, Miguel Adrover, said the actress, but it also had dashes of what she called “gay lumberjack,” James Dean, preppy New England and English punk. Highlights included skinny moleskin trousers, Fair Isle, tiger and leopard-patterned knits, little tweed blazers, dyed thermals and oversize jackets that fall past the hip. It was conceived as a men’s collection that women could also wear.

chloe-sevigny05.jpg

Sevigny and Opening Ceremony have also collaborated with Bass on a selection of footwear, including two-tone Weejun loafers and saddle-shoe boots. Other accessories include checkerboard scarves, fabric backpacks with plastic patch pockets and beanies. Prices start at $95 for a fringed scarf and run to $945 for an overcoat. The line will be carried at Opening Ceremony in New York and Los Angeles and stores including Barneys, Colette and Dover Street Market.

chloe-sevigny04.jpg

The collection is Sevigny’s second for Opening Ceremony and her first foray into men’s wear. “There’s much less pressure doing men’s, and because this collection is unisex and oversized, I felt like I could have more fun,” she said. “Except for the trousers — getting the fit right was really difficult.” Although designing is just a sideline — she was showing this collection in between filming “Mr. Nice” in Wales and Spain — Sevigny said it’s a passion. “I love pouring my creative energy into fashion during my downtime,” she said.

chloe-sevigny01.jpg

This isn’t the end of her work with Opening Ceremony. She wants to continue designing for them, but would also consider other projects. “Maybe I’d do a very small collection for one of the big luxury brands,” she said. “But right now, Opening Ceremony is right — we have a shared aesthetic.”

Spring 2009 Fashion Preview/ Vogue's Anna Wintour Hiring

macys4-spring09.jpg

Make Me Blue-tiful

Blue is often associated with spirituality and celestial powers. Surrounded by blue elements in the air, water, crystals and diamonds, it is known for making a powerful statement. A sacred hue worn by royalty, blue's deep saturated pigments, layered with medium shots of regatta, Mediterranean blue and sheer aquamarine, add dimension and importance to any outfit. As seen in knits and tees, skinny or flowing pants, shifts, sheaths, and strapless dresses, as well as sculpted outerwear, blue's impact is evident. Prints include batik, tie-dyed, and ikat combined with embellishment and crafty details. Fabrications range from sheers, chiffons and charmeuse, to jersey, stretch cotton, and denim. A sea of blue can also be seen in totes and satchels, pumps and flats, china print scarves, and statement pieces in turquoise and aquamarine.

muted-and-metallic-macys-sp.jpg

The Avant Garden

A declaration of love or a gesture of thanks, flowers communicate where words are irrelevant. Not your typical floral arrangement, these flowers are in bloom whether they are scattered in all-over patterns, stylized or abstract, romantic or graphic prints. A flourishing wardrobe captivates the eye, bringing dimension to simple sheath and shift dresses, flat knit cardigans, full skirts and chiffon blouses. This season's love affair with florals continues with fabric flowers, cloisine cuffs, floral pins and rings, canvas handbags with silk flowers and oversized earrings. Spring 2009 will be bountiful with blooms bursting at the seams of apparel and accessories.

macys-accessories-spring09.jpg

Welcome Back Color

Back and bolder than ever, color is here to stay! With an intense energy that stirs your emotions, color is therapy for the mind, body, and soul this season. Take advantage of the vast color spectrum to accentuate a personality trait or convey an emotion. This modern and graphic approach for a wardrobe with a minimalist attitude is not to be missed. Bright colors used to boost or to shield include pepper green, ultra violet and purple contrasted with camellia rose pink, flame scarlet, and lemon chrome. Fabrics such as neoprene rubbers, nylons, shiny vinyls and patents, stretch Lycra jersey, sheers and optical prints give these hot new colors a modern twist. Important silhouettes will include tee shirt dressing, striped tunics and hoodies, graphic shirts, layered pieces, wide leg pants, tailored jackets and one-shoulder dresses. To play up your outfit even more, include color-blocked handbags, cubist shoes, wrap belts, bold rings and cuffs, and opaque hosiery in all colors of the rainbow.

macys1-spring09.jpg

Summer of Love

The daughter of a rock icon and a fairy, tough and ethereal meet to evoke the spirit of enchantment this summer. Reinvent a wardrobe into a world of wonder by blending the flavor of 70’s with a hint of St. Tropez. The free-spirited attitude illustrates a fairy tale story filled with light and airy textiles, and washed and distressed tones. Bright touches mixed with pales, ranging from caramel cream and subtle lemon grass yellow, to hints of dusty smoke grey, and sea fog purple, whisper their heady melody. Sculpting fabrics with vintage lace, tulle, iridescent sequins, feather trims and crystal talismans as embellishments, give easy silhouettes a sense of whimsy. Art and message tanks and tees, leather motorcycle jackets, skinny pants and vests, against a feminine ruffled and tie-neck blouses, maxi-dresses, gypsy skirts and tunic blouses make this trend romantic at heart, but reinvents a contemporary world with magic and a hint of rock and roll. Metal continues to influence this trend with handbags flanked in precious metals, studs and fringe in oversized, unconstructed totes. Zipper details play a major role, while surreal heels and flat summer boots in exotic skins enhance the look. A mix of hard and soft add character to the leather and chiffon, chain link and diamond combinations.

macys3-spring09.jpg

Cactus Flower

With flowers in full bloom, the young and hip crowd has found their place in this season’s fresh bouquet. For a relaxed summer mood, romantic soft-washed watercolors bloom in muted brights. Ditsy prints mixed in varying scales within one garment create an ultra feminine look. Retro prevails in 60’s style florals with bold outlines and color palettes including rose, petal, orchid, terra cotta, and desert shades. The modern flower child motif includes easy silhouettes and floaty, flirty pieces. Billowing unstructured skirts and tops, flowing maxi dresses, fabrics like lace, chiffon, soft leather and suede along with fringe detailing are the key features of this romantic look. All abloom, this floral look gives you the freedom to layer fabrics, mix prints and fearlessly accessorize.

florals-spring09-macys.jpg

Supergirl

It’s a bird… It’s a plane… it’s a fresh look at retro-comic superhero attire. Exploring our fascination with fantasy, imagination and the heroine, supergirl style creates a sophisticated take on the street-casual look. With comic book tees, super tight jeans and bold prints taking center stage, this trend cannot be missed. Providing unlimited opportunities to remake and reshape a wardrobe, float into a fantasy world where you play a starring role. Ultra bright colors, and skintight silhouettes, suggest an unorthodox version of glamour. This spring, fashion is moving faster than a speeding bullet.

All fashions pictured above are available at Macy's.

Vogue's Anna Wintour Looking for Two New Assistants

the-devil-prada.jpg

In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep's character, modeled after Anna herself, has to get by with only two assistants to run ragged, but I guess in real life she is used to having three. Unfortunately for her, two have apparently just jumped ship. An e-mail was sent from Condé Nast:

Hi guys,

Sorry for the mass email. Two of the three assistants in Anna Wintour's office are leaving soon and Condé Nast is starting to look for candidates. If you know of anyone that may be interested in applying have them shoot me an email and I can put them in touch with the right person in HR.

Some experience in fashion or media is good. Smart, well-educated, calm, etc...

Let me know if you can think of anyone.

Thanks!

Who will the lucky two be? And will we ever know the reason for the sudden departures - it seems like there must be some juicy details to this story... Let's hope someone dishes soon!

Anna on the Hunt for Hot Cover Girls & Justin Timberlake

j-n-j-n-katy.jpg

According to the New York Post, backstage at the William Rast show in the Mercedes-Benz Star lounge, Anna Wintour was overheard asking daughter Bee Schaffer, "Who is the singer that talks about kissing girls?" (Katy Perry). Wintour told William Rast founder Justin Timberlake that he and Perry should team up for something in an upcoming issue of Vogue, and also told Timberlake that his girlfriend, Jessica Biel, should stop by her office to discuss a future cover.

Confessions of a Stylist/14 Days of Love/Bella Intimates Brings Sexy Back

Confession of a Stylist: Patricia Field

confessions-of-a-shopaholic.jpg

Although Patricia Field is probably most well-known for creating Carrie Bradshaw's look on "Sex and the City," she's been in the fashion business for years and has served as the costume designer for many movies and TV shows including "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Ugly Betty."

Another character lucky enough to be styled by Ms. Field is "Confessions of a Shopaholic's" Rebecca Bloomwood played by Isla Fisher. If you've never read Sophie Kinsella's best-selling series of books that the movie is based on, Bloomwood is a writer who dreams of working for her favorite fashion magazine -- and also happens to be obsessed with shopping. Although the movie doesn't debut in theaters until February 13, Field gave omg! a little insight into Rebecca's colorful wardrobe, as well as her own personal style.

How would you describe Rebecca Bloomwood's style?
"It reflects her shopaholic affliction. It's bold, it's eclectic, it's hyper-reality. Her whole room is a closet, so [her wardrobe] is massive. When you have this volume, you can put it together in so many [different] ways because you have so much to choose from."

Which designers did you turn to when dressing Rebecca?
"I got her a lot of clothes from Tokyo -- Harajuko Shibuya, which is young fashion, lots of color. [Isla's] little and the clothes.

Two Portsmouth State Street retailers receive statewide recognition

assiah1108.jpg

Two Portsmouth State Street retailers receive statewide recognition New Hampshire Magazine: “Living Large on Less” Puttin’ on the Glitz & Upscale Resale Affordable luxuries on Portsmouth’s Historic State Street “today’s economy presents tremendous buying opportunities. It’s a buyer’s market…if you know where to look” - New Hampshire Magazine

Portsmouth, New Hampshire…Puttin on the Glitz and Upscale Resale, two retailers on Historic State Street in downtown Portsmouth, were featured in a New Hampshire Magazine article focused on finding “hidden retail treasures” in the state, a list compiled from interviews across New Hampshire by reporter Darren Garnick. His January “Living Large on Less” guide gave hot tips on finding those “tremendous buying opportunities” he says are part of today’s economy.

From “Living Large on Less”
It’s a buyer’s market… if you know where to look. The advice, to appreciate more sunsets, squeeze in more hugs with the family and bake more yummy cookies, resonates strongly during these turbulent economic times — especially to the thousands of New Hampshire families smacked this winter by power-robbing ice storms. But even the most sentimental Americans still love to own nice stuff. And Granite Staters, of course, are no different.

In downtown Portsmouth, Puttin’ on the Glitz boutique owner Assiah Russell’s mantra is that jewelry is not meant to be stored in a safe deposit box. Her sales pitch is that “Daily Jewels” — fine crystals, beads, art glass and semi-precious stones — can represent “the soul and personality of the woman wearing them.”
“Costume jewelry, or fashion jewelry, as it is now called, arose in the 1920s and ’30s when women wanted to look great in a down economy,” she says. “Also, women who were rich and had precious jewels did not want to travel with them, but would not be seen without jewelry. It is like gilding the lily or putting the icing on the cake. We believe it is… about... finding the jewels to accent each woman’s uniqueness,” adds Russell, who also specializes in vintage beaded purses from Europe.

A few blocks away Upscale Resale owner Janet Solomon agrees with the glitz philosophy of daily high fashion. Solomon, who also owns a seasonal high-end thrift store in Ogunquit, Maine, focuses mainly on artsy clothing. “If a woman knows her labels, she’s going to flip out when she comes in my store,” she predicts. “A good label will fit the body much better, it will hold up longer and it will be the item in your closet that you reach for first. It’s like anything else in this world. You get what you pay for.”

Also-February is the month for lovers, friends, champagne, sweets and lovely gestures of affection...

14 Days of Love

14daysoflove.jpg

Show your partner just how much you care this year by celebrating your love for the 14 days leading up to Valentine's Day. Your sweetheart is sure to be swept off their feet by these tokens of love, sweet surprises, and romantic rendezvous. Feel free to switch up these 14 ideas and do them in any order, or take some of ours and add in some of your own! Whatever way you do it, this will surely be a Valentine's Day your partner will never forget.

Day 1 - Send an LYC ecard
Send your love an e-card today to kick off your 14 days of love. If you have trouble choosing just one, send one every day until Valentine’s Day! No membership required, totally free, and sure to put a smile on their face. LYC has new cards to choose from every week.

Day 2 - Dinner in Bed
Pamper your love tonight with dinner in bed. Casual or elegant picnics in bed are a fun, romantic way to step outside of the box and connect with your partner. See tips and ideas here.

Day 3 - Desktop Theme
"Like so many out there, there my partner lives overseas. For Valentine's Day, I created a Windows desktop theme of myself for him. I made icons for the recycle bin, wallpaper, and even cursors. I didn’t get around to making sounds (which would've been lines from our favorite songs) but I made great screensavers. I make two different themes -- a "nice" theme and a "naughty" one. I zipped each theme up individually and sent them both to him. Watching his face on the webcam as he opened them, realizing what they were, then exploring them even more was absolutely wonderful and he adored them. Especially the cursors in the naughty theme, hehe."
--submitted by ShineyAngel

Day 4 - Whisk your partner away for an impromptu picnic or to watch the sunset.
See more “Intimate Gestures That Anyone Can Do!”

Day 5 - Take an LYC love quiz together
With questions that range from your favorite childhood memories to what you’ve always wanted to do in bed, these love quizzes will have you sharing and connecting like never before.

Day 6 - Make them a good old fashioned compilation CD
Burn them a disk of great songs today. Choose love songs that tell how you feel, songs from your favorite movies, songs on their favorites list, or a well planned out mood trip (guide how your love will feel from the minute they leave the house to when they get to work and then back home with your playlist – make them laugh, touch their soul and remind them of just how much you care). Package it up real sweet or slip it into their car CD player for a fun surprise.

Day 7 - Read to each other from a favorite novel, book of poetry, or erotica.
If you don't already have some, LYC has plenty of reader-submitted romantic stories, poems, and erotica to choose from. See more bedtime romance ideas.

Day 8 - Treat your love to lunch
There is a romantic idea to fit any schedule…

Meet them for a lunch date at their favorite restaurant.
Pack them a special lunch with a sweet love note or Valentine treat.
Have one of their favorite restaurants deliver lunch to them at work.
Bring lunch to them for an office picnic.
Pack a picnic and have them meet you at the park on their lunch break.
Plan a steamy lunch date.

Day 9 - Play a romantic game for two

We’ve got some great suggestions from LYC readers, as well as our own versions of our favorite classic games gone romantic. Grab a bottle of wine or a couple of beers, a yummy snack tray, and let the games begin!

Day 10 - Ten Reasons Why
"For Valentine's Day, I cut out several hearts that led my boyfriend from the front door to the bedroom. He opened the door to a room full of balloons that covered the ground completely, with some balloons overlapping. In the middle of the room, on a chair, there was a stuffed black dog with boxing gloves on that read, "You're a Knock Out," (this was perfect since he loves to box)! There was a poem sitting beside it with candy kisses all around. In the entire room full of balloons, he had to find the 10 special balloons and pop them to find the hidden messages, which were 10 reasons why I love him."
--submitted by Christina

Day 11 - LYC Printables
Print off a love note and leave it on his pillow, his windshield, or in his lunch. Print off a romantic puzzle to do together, print an award for them, a love journal page, or some Valentine's Day stationary to write them a love note on.

Day 12 - A "Kissable" Surprise
"I was in a "romantic idea" mood and decided that I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with something while he was at work. I get off an hour earlier than he does, so I drove over to his work and put Hershey kisses all over his car! I left before he came out so I couldn't see the reaction on his face, but said it was absolutely the sweetest thing any body has ever done for him!"
--submitted by Anonymous

Day 13 - Love Coupons
Good for one: full body massage, dance in the rain, romantic dinner for two, champagne and cuddling by the fire, a kiss anytime, anywhere. Print or email these love coupons and more from Lovingyou.com or make your own.

Day 14 - "Meet Me" Hunt
"On Valentine’s Day, we were both working and were to meet up at home around 6:30 pm. I managed to get off of work around noon, so I decided to do something really special for him. I set things up with the local bakery, florist, and one of his favorite stores to make the night work. I went home and left a big note on the dining table - a place I knew he wouldn't miss. The note said that I would meet him at the bakery at 7:00. When he got to the bakery, the salesman gave him a cake and another note. This note told him to meet me at the florist, which was nearby. At the florist, he received flowers and a Valentine card, as well as another note. The note said that I'd meet him at one of his favorite stores. When he got there, he collected his already-wrapped gift from the salesman along with his final note. It told him that I'd meet him at one of our favorite restaurants. When he reached there, I was waiting for him with candle-lit dinner. We had a memorable evening and he said he loved it!" --submitted by Neha

Madonna's got a new boy toy, and he's predictably young and naked.

mod.jpg

The 50-year-old Madge, who is newly divorced from Guy Ritchie and has never, ever tolerated rumors of a hot new relationship to grab a little spotlight, appears in various stages of undress in the March issue of W magazine with 22-year-old Jesus Luz. The 46-page spread features the duo making out, Madonna lying on top of Luz, and Luz standing wet wearing only a towel.

The photos were taken by Steven Klein in a hotel in Rio de Janeiro in December. Madonna and Luz first met at the shoot.

What do you think of the pairing? Did Madonna just choose a guy named Jesus to do that fanning-religious-outrage thing she does so well? TVGuide

Fashion Flashback - 1976

What Was Chic in 1976?

time-cover.jpg
(On cover) Halston's black satin "Savage" swimsuit.

When I was visiting my mother and sister in Connecticut for Thanksgiving, I found a stash of late father's old TIME magazines. It may be obvious why this cover caught my eye, and why this 75 cent issue from 1976 is the one that made it into my bag & back to New Hampshire. You know, for a little inspiration... It's fun to see what people were wearing when I was 4 months old.

1976-partone.jpg
(Clockwise) Halston's Bicentennial statement; Albert Capraro's cotton vinyl rainsuit; Mary McFadden's open back tunic over harem pants.

"Fashion is a much broader concept now. It's not just from the chin to the ankles. Fashion now means health, good looks, being in shape, good skin, beauty care. It means wine, furniture, needlecraft, growing things. Fashion today means the environment as well as clothes." This was spoken by Geraldine Stutz; at the time the article was written in Time, she was president of the Henri Bendel in Manhattan. The clothing in the article is described as "free and frisky, its emphasis on casual comfort." This makes me truly wonder - what happened to the vinyl rainsuit? I think it's time to bring it back...

1976-parttwo.jpg
(Left - Right) Geoffrey Beene's sleeveless tunic over pajama pants; Monika Tilley's starred maillout swimsuit; and Beene's pajama game.

This was a period in history when American women were rejecting the formalism of European haute couture. For the first time, designers created looks that worked for women for day and evening. Designer swimsuits sold for $25 - $60. Diana Vreeland, editor of Harper's Bazaar and Vogue for 30 years, observed of men and women on Seventh Avenue, "a great fastidiousness, simplicity, and everyday elegance that is wonderful and very American. For the first time, American designers' ready-to-wear clothes are a perfect turnout."

Geoffrey Beene believes "clothes today must fit into this supersonic pace of living. It's an economic reality. The indulgence is over." And this was long before the BlackBerry came around! If the pace of life was supersonic in 1976, what the heck would you call the pace now?

1976-partthree.jpg
(Left - Right) Calvin Klein's apron dress and stovepipe pants; Beene Bag's tank top and wide pants; Carol Horn's skirt worn as a strapless dress.

This was a time in America fashion history when women were first learning how to mix and match separates from different designers. Consuelo Crespi, editor of Italian Vogue in 1976, said, "It's the effortless look, the throwaway chic that Americans do so well. They can give dinner party for eight, be up early next morning on the tennis court, and still look fresh the next day."

For the first time, American fashion was influencing European design. The Paris fall '76 ready-to-wear runway shows featured looks from the Army-Navy store, Bermuda shorts, and parkas. The American fashion influence was also surging through Japan at this time; American-style clothes accounted for $300 million in sales to the Japanese in 1975. Calvin Klein was a rising star; he had opened his own fashion house in 1968. Vogue declared a typical Klein ensemble of skirt, skinny coat, and cowled sweater "the best basic look in fashion today," and also proclaims, "if you were around 100 years from now and wanted a definitive picture of the American look in 1975, you'd study Calvin Klein," Klein said that many designers took cues from Jackie-O, but that he instead kept a keen eye on the average young American woman for inspiration.

This Time magazine also features celebrities such as Lauren Hutton in Ralph Lauren, Ethel Kennedy in Halston, and Mary Wells Lawrence in Bill Blass. In that respect, the layout is very similar to something you would see in People magazine today. My point is that we have been obsessed with what (and WHO) celebrities are wearing for many years & it doesn't look like we're going to end our fixation anytime soon.

Betsey Johnson to Design for H&M or Target

guyslovebj.jpg

I have always felt a certain kinship to Betsey Johnson, and I only recently learned that she is from my very own hometown of Wethersfield, Connecticut. Here's some exciting news - you may soon be able to get Betsey Johnson clothing on a much lower budget! My little sister works at Target, and I have asked her to give me a heads up if she hears anything about the collection's debut.

Following the trend for a smaller fall 2009 presentation, Betsey Johnson will be unveiling her new collection at her 5,000-square-foot showroom, cutting costs by 50%. A typical Betsey Johnson runway show usually runs up a tab of $300,000 to $600,000. In addition to cutting costs on the runway, the Betsey Johnson house alluded to a much more recession-friendly line.

CEO Chantal Bacon said, "Ms. Johnson is planning a limited-edition design collaboration with a retailer that will likely launch in the fall." She didn't disclose with retailer exactly, but it's easy to assume it will be either H&M or Target, both of which have similar deals in the past with designers. And it's expected that a lot more deals like this will be happening in the future!

Hot Mess Spotting

lily-homemade-cc.jpg

Lily Allen was photographed leaving Nobu in London this past Wednesday night wearing what looks to be a homemade Coco Chanel T-shirt, Daisy Dukes, fishnet tights, gray Uggs and leather gloves. She also looked wasted, despite announcing that she wasn’t going to be drinking these days.

According to the paparazzi who were tracking her, a homeless man on the street got pissed at her because she wouldn’t give him a handout. He screamed at her that he was better dressed than she was.
(Source: evilbeetgossip.film.com)

Lily recently covered Britney's song Womanizer. Here is a video that starts with Lily's track set to Britney's video. It then oscillates between Lily and Britney singing. (Hint: the British accent isn't Britney.):

You can compare it to the original that we posted on Runway Ready on November 17.

Aubrey O'Day Goes Gay for Pay? Ka-ching!/ Lindsay Lohan's Leggins Flying off the Shelf/ Can Aniston Sell Tickets?/Rumors on the Next Catwomen Role?

http://somagirls.tv Aubrey O'Day goes gay for pay, Hermione Granger gets naked, Lindsay Lohan stocks up for the Holidays, and rumors continue on which Grey's Anatomy star will leave the show

What's the Lindsey gossip?

According to Celeb-gossip, Lindsey is continuing on with her high-profile lifestyle, Lindsay Lohan was spotted on her way out of Magnolia restaurant in Hollywood last night following a delicious dinner with friends.

The “Labor Pains” actress looked focused as she pushed past the paparazzi, sporting a black leather jacket overtop a black mini with black leggings and a pair of black heels.

And it sounds like LiLo is being roped into her girlfriend Samantha Ronson’s lawsuit with her former lawyer Martin Garbus, who Ronson had initially hired to sue celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

Sam is suing Garbus for malpractice, and he’s counter-suing her for unpaid fees. And according to a report, the lesbian lovers’ private lives could come out in the court proceedings if they’re not careful.

Garbus’ attorneys are reportedly using Lohan as a witness in the case, and have requested information regarding their relationship, finances, drug use, alleged rehab stays, and even copies of the text messages and emails between them.

Yeah, but let's talk about those leggins?

lyndsey lohan leggins.jpg

Despite the fact that the economy is crumbling beneath our very feet, Lindsay Lohan's absurdly over-priced leggings are selling like hotcakes.

"They're blowing off the shelves," says Jill Lowe, publicist for high-end Hollywood boutique Intuition.

The Marilyn Monroe-inspired leggings - which cost anywhere from $44 to $132 - are also flying out the doors at Henri Bendel, Nordstrom, Intermix and Lisa Kline.

From leopard prints to zippered black tights, Lindsay's got a lil' something for everyone with 35 styles in various colors and patterns.

Across the board, stores say, Lohan's best-seller is her Mr. President leggings - the most expensive and unique-looking option. Black with grey knee patches, the $132 tights are a big hit from coast to coast.

Craziness! Who'd've thunk it??

And Lohan's gonna keep going with this "designer" gig.

Lohan and her team plan to develop four collections a year - spring, summer, fall and holiday - and they want to get even bigger.

"We are building a lifestyle brand that represents timeless glamour," Brubaker says. "Our hope is to organically [roll] out additional product categories over the next several years."

Do you think Lindsey is trying to tell us something in the picture below? By the way, I have those very boots Lindsey is wearing! Love'em...

Surprising rumors about the next Catwomen role...cat-women.jpg
The "Hot Gossip" seems to be swirling around the possibility of Catwoman making an appearance in Batman 3. Most recently, E! Online has reported that Rachel Weisz of "The Mummy" fame is being considered for the part. This differs from rumors earlier in the year -- fueled by the original Catwoman Julie Newmar -- that Angelina Jolie might be getting the nod.

And still others say that Maggie Gyllenhaal will be donning the cat cowl, which is a bit of a head scratch considering her character Rachel Dawes was blown up in the Dark Knight. However, Hollywood Newsroom claims that Gyllenhaal along with Aaron Eckhart have signed up for not one but two Bat-flicks. The theory goes that Rachel will have used one of her nine lives in the blast and she returns from the dead as the leather-clad feline crime fighter. source Yahoo.com

Jennifer Aniston Sells Magazines. Can She Still Sell Movie Tickets?

It has been 2 1/2 years since the last film starring Jennifer Aniston hit screens. That movie, "The Break-Up," co-starred her one-time boyfriend Vince Vaughn and opened in first place at the box office. But since then, her only acting roles have been guest appearances on Courteney Cox Arquette's show "Dirt" in 2007 and on "30 Rock" last month.

She needs a big box-office smash if she is going to re-establish herself as a real movie star and not just a headline. The most financially successful movie of her career is "Bruce Almighty," which grossed $243 million, but that was sold solely as a Jim Carrey vehicle. In fact, all her top films paired her with a male comedy star, like Ben Stiller in "Along Came Polly."

This means the pressure is on for her next movie, "Marley & Me" to perform well.

Banana Republic Spring 2009/ New Owner for O2 Yoga Portsmouth Location/ H&M Home/ Victoria's Secret TONIGHT

Clean up. Start fresh. Shine on. These optimistic tenets inform Simon Kneen’s debut collection which revolves around soft silhouettes, tactile finishes and pervading sense of ease. A quiet palette of ecru, slate, and pastel hues serves as a meditation on color, while sportswear shapes are elevated to everyday luxuries when rendered in lush, fluid materials.

BR2009.jpg

This newly refined vision parlays into an updated definition of monochromatic dressing. Sleek columns of color provide refreshing a contrast to cluttered backdrops while the rich sheen on liquid-like fabrics provides a modern polish. The nude banded heel elongates the leg without effort while the clutch and solid bangle serve as the perfect minimalist accents.

Likewise, silhouettes are thoughtfully restrained: Relax-fit trousers hang gently above the ankle, pantaloon shorts have delicate blouson hems, and airy knits fit close to the body. Languid, breezy pants and oversized shirts in ultra-light soy silk are the epitome of casual chic while sculptural pieces—from the origami-pleat shift to the dolman sleeve knit dress-make a statement in modern elegance. Balancing the architectural with the practical, each piece is an accessible luxury.

Gone is the formal, highly stylized look of men’s suiting and in its place, an effortless mix of subtly textured layers. Tailored cardigans replace traditional sartorial accents while pin stripes, refined cashmere, and pique polos personalize the look. In paperweight leather, the architectural trench and bomber are re-imagined as sophisticated exteriors. Trousers and blazers in summer wools are narrow yet breathable-and smart: In another modern turn, interior suit pockets are cleverly situated—with the device devotee in mind—to allow for uncomplicated wire management.

BRBoys.jpg

This clean, streamlined vision is punctuated by an infusion of buoyant Californian colors. Hockney’s crisp, chlorinated blue and Thiebaud’s sweet sorbet shades resurface on serious separates including oxford shirts, tailored cotton trousers and pebbled silk evening gowns, all fresh, effortless, and versatile. These items can all be found at Banana Republic once the Spring 2009 collection goes on sale.

Hayden's Handbags/ Katie: New Face of Miu Miu/ Local Specials

haydbag.jpg

Hayden Panettiere has a new clutch debuting this month. She's teamed up with Dooney & Bourke to create a clutch for their Spring 2009 collection. It will be named after Hayden ("The Hayden Clutch") and will hit stores this month. Start saving if you like it, as it retails for $295. It will be offered in blue, red, black, purple, hot pink, white, and brown with leather piping in an accent color.

The bag is made from Italian calfskin and is fastened with a 24 carat gold plated lion head, representing Hayden's astrological sign, Leo. As I am not a fan of gold, I guess I'll be saving $295. It would also be nice if the clutches had other signs of the zodiac available. Call me crazy, but they would probably sell more. This Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp blogger wouldn't be caught dead wearing Leo, but maybe that's just me...

This isn’t Hayden's first foray into handbag design; the Heroes starlet (Save the cheerleader, Save the world...) designed the Hayden Bag, a large leather bag available in many colors, for the Fall 2008 collection. I actually prefer the 2008 collection, as l am a fan of larger bags.

Katie Holmes is the New Face of Miu Miu

katie_holmes_300x400.jpg

I have been waiting for confirmation that the rumors I was reading were true. It has been confirmed that Katie Holmes will indeed replace Johnny Depp's partner, Vanessa Paradis, who is the current face of Miu Miu. Sources have confirmed to People.com that Katie Holmes will be the new face of Miu Miu for the Spring/Summer ad campaign. Previous celebrities who have appeared in Miu Miu ads include Lindsay Lohan, Chloë Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, and Drew Barrymore.

An insider said: "Katie is soon going to start shooting the photographs for the spring 2009 campaign. She will be posing alongside real models, who will be positioned as 'accessories' in the campaign. It's quite edgy and very different for Katie." Katie has also been seen recently wearing some of her own designs, as she is in the photo above. I'm excited to see what she will look like in the ads.

KARMA THREADS' NEW ‘SHELTER ME’ SCARF
SUPPORTS NATIONAL YOUTH HOMELESS AWARENESS

KarmaThreads hopes to spread its “Shelter Me” message to everyone interested in preventing youth homelessness. KarmaThreads, a positive messaging apparel company, has released its Shelter Me Scarf in time for cooler weather and in support of this worthy cause. During the month of November, consumers who purchased the new scarf also made a donation to StandUp for Kids, a charitable organization that reaches out to homeless, street kids and at-risk youth providing educational programs that build self esteem and responsibility.

shelter.jpg

“Most people don’t know there are more homeless youth than there are people in the state of New Hampshire. In fact, if all the homeless youth were in one city, it would be the seventh largest in the United States. Those are staggering statistics for us all to think about not only this month, but every month of the year,” said Rhonda Lee, owner of KarmaThreads®. “We hope that our small gesture to promote awareness of youth homelessness will spark others to get involved either by purchasing the Shelter Me scarf, donating their time at a local shelter, or providing a monetary donation to StandUp for Kids. We can’t let our nation’s kids get overlooked, particularly in these tough economic times.”

Let's Do It Obama Style!

Barack Obama is having an impact on fashion, and we're not just talking t-shirts, although there are plenty of those to choose from.

obama-ts.jpg

You would think this election was not just for President of the United States, considering the international reaction to his triumph over McCain. Jon Stewart illustrated this point on the Nov. 6 episode of The Daily Show, in a piece entitled, "International Male."

Is Barack the next Che Guevara? (His image became a ubiquitous countercultural symbol after his death forty years ago.) Now that Obama is our President-elect, you can bet that the catwalks in February will be littered with his image, as we are already seeing new designs emerge with his image and name.

fashion-graphics-2_1106025a.jpg
Above: Left - designed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Right - designed by Sonia Rykiel.

Sonia Rykiel, a French designer, was inspired by Obama at Paris Fashion Week, featuring a series of preppy designs. Jean Charles de Castelbajac, friend of the late Andy Warhol, used Barack's image at PFW; the highlight of his runway show was the sequinned dress featuring Obama's image, pictured above. "I made it because for me, Barack Obama is the most charismatic leader in politics today."

Of Obama, Jean Charles de Castelbajac also said, "He is incarnate of hope, changes and youth. The ovation the dress received amazed me - as did the amount of insulting letters I have received from the United States. But I'm pleased to see that fashion has become such a powerful medium."

"Fashion has always been political since the days when sumptuary laws prohibited people of lower rank from wearing certain fabrics," observed Caroline Evans, professor of fashion history at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. "But there are new, unwritten laws as to what kind of clothes political figures choose to wear. Like it or not, in a media age they will be judged by their appearance as much as by their convictions."

New Gossip Girl - Monday, Nov. 10, 8pm on the CW

Gossip Girl fans will be excited to hear that the second season has been extended by two episodes. Originally there were 22 episodes scheduled for the season, but the CW has upped that number to 24.

We saw Jenny's own fashion line, J. Humphrey designs, debut when Jenny crashed an event honoring Lily Bass during last week's episode and presented her guerilla fashion show leading to her Page Six debut in the New York Post. However, little J's rise to fame may be hindered by her model friend, Agnes, who looks like she will be a liability, judging from the scenes you can click here to watch. I'm getting the vibe that she wants credit for Jenny's designs. Meanwhile, Blair hates Cyrus and Serina is enamored with Aaron.

Jenny's transition to bad, independent girl is emphasized by her new look with heavy black eyeliner and a new (more punk rock, less girl next-door) haircut. It is easy to forget Jenny's age when we see her locking lips with Nate. He starts the season sleeping with a married older woman and transitions to making out with a 15 year-old girl... oh, Nate. There was also that woman from Yale, Jordan, whose name didn't ring a bell when she called Dan's cell phone as he and Nate were walking together. That was before Dan found out about Nate smooching Jenny (though a Gossip Girl photo text update) and told him to move out of the Humphrey household. There is great chemistry between Nate and Jenny, and I'm interested to see where their storyline goes.
dark-eyelinerjenny.jpg

The video below was playing in the background of Jenny's fashion show; it gives a sense of Jenny's design aesthetic, if you have not yet watched the footage from the episode. See the Nov. 4 entry of Runway Ready to see Jenny's fashion show.

On a final fashion note, if you have ever wondered about Blair's headbands and headpieces, I have discovered that Jennifer Behr is the designer of many pieces that have adorned Blair's head. Inspired by the richness of silks, feathers, stones, pythons and leathers, materials are the starting point for Jennifer Behr. Her collection is made by hand in her studio in Brooklyn where she works these materials into delicate headpieces. The leather and python pieces are produced with a network of small workshops in Brooklyn and Manhattan. This results in hair accessories carrying the soul of handwork, while remaining thoroughly modern in appearance.

leighton_meester_300x400.jpg

The collection is a favorite among Hollywood's A-list, including Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Katy Perry and Heidi Klum. The pieces have graced the pages of many renowned publications such as W, Vogue, Elle, Teen Vogue, and Nylon. Jennifer Behr hair accessories can be found in over 40 boutiques nationally and internationally, including Bergdorf Goodman, Colette, Browns Focus, Lane Crawford and On Pedder.

Hindus ask supermodel Heidi Klum for "public apology" for posing as Goddess Kali in Halloween party

Hindus have asked actress, supermodel, and producer Heidi Klum to tender a public apology for portraying as Goddess Kali at a Halloween party in a club at New York (USA), which they say hurt the feelings of devotees.

Acclaimed Hindu and Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that Goddess Kali was highly revered in Hinduism and she was meant to be worshipped in temples and not to be used in clubs for publicity stunts or thrown around loosely for dramatic effects.

Zed, who is the president of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion followers and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. No faith, larger or smaller, should be ridiculed at, Zed said and added that inappropriate use of Hinduism concepts and symbols was not okay.

Hindus welcomed Hollywood and other entertainment industries to immerse in Hinduism but taking it seriously and respectfully and not just for indecorous showing of Hindu symbols and concepts to advance their selfish agenda. Casual flirting sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees, Rajan Zed pointed out and added that their divine beings were not just costumes.

Meanwhile, various others, including Jawahar L. Khurana of Hindu Alliance of India, and Bhavna Shinde, a spirituality guide, have also criticized Klum for posing as Goddess Kali on Halloween, calling it "denigrating". Annabelle Younger of International Society for Krishna Consciousness, says, "I must vehemently protest this misguided abuse of the sacred religious symbols of the world's oldest continuous Religion and Culture…".

Nominated for five Primetime Emmys, German born 35 years old Klum is actress, model, producer, fashion designer, singer, and television personality.

Goddess Kali, who personifies Sakti or divine energy, is widely worshipped in Hinduism. She is considered the goddess of time and change. Some Bengali poets described her as supreme deity.

xoxo... Gossip Girl

WATCH TO SEE JENNY HUMPHREY'S FASHIONS TONIGHT!!!!
GOSSIP GIRL ON THE CW AT 8:00 PM!!!!

s_and_b.jpg

Why do we really watch Gossip Girl? Okay, there are a few reasons... the oh so cute & pretty upper east side boys... the story lines that have stayed fairly interesting thus far... and the real reason - what is everyone wearing?? I swear I have plaid flats that I would never have purchased (from last fall) were it not for the character of Blair Waldorf. You will not see me sporting a tie anytime soon, but I can also credit the show for my newfound love of headbands (Blair) and scarves (Serina).

In this last episode - purple - THE color of the season was everywhere... I especially loved the dress Blair was wearing when she was trying to seduce Chuck at the bar - although their storyline is one I had enough of at this point; it's getting hard to keep it interesting, except for the wardrobe changes... There was also the great purple skirt and green top ensemble Blair wore to the gallery.

The video above pays homage to many of the great styles we have seen on the show, but right now I just am so excited to see tonight's episode and Jenny Humphrey's designs! She took a bold stand against Eleanor Waldorf and walked out with the green dress that Serina wore during Eleanor's Fashion Week show finale. Jenny had actually designed the dress, but Blair was causing trouble again...

gg24blog.jpg

Jenny's new model friend (perhaps a bad influence?? She did get Jenny dancing around and photographed in her underwear by a photographer with perhaps less than noble intentions, until Nate came to save the day, and then take proceeded to confess his feelings to Jenny in a passionate kiss.) The model advised Jenny to stop letting Eleanor take advantage of her work and take all the credit for Jenny's designs and inspires her to start her own line, and we should see the first examples on tonight's episode! Yeah, and it looks like Jenny will end up getting arrested, too - this show always has great scenes for the next episode:

WATCH TONIGHT!!!!

Denise Nelms wants to get inside your closet

sylist-web.jpg
Welcome to the world of Denise Nelms, founder of the blog www.style180online.com. Denise has my dream job – shopping and going through other people's closets. Denise is a personal stylist who teaches women how find their fabulous side with the right clothes, colors and styles that flatter their figure. Denise recently gave Runway Ready a very interesting look at the life of a wardrobe/fashion consultant.

Runway Ready: Denise, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Denise: I am an "empty nester" with two girls in college and a wonderful husband. I started modeling in Houston 15 years ago and later taught wardrobe development at a modeling school. I love fashion consulting because it gives me the privilege of helping people feel great about the way they look in their clothes. I also write a fashion column for Applaud magazine.

denise-header-web.jpg

Runway Ready: When did you first realize you wanted to be a stylist?

Denise: My passion for fashion started with my first Barbie doll! I would spend hours putting together complete ensembles for Barbie, Midge and Ken. Then in middle school I learned how to sew and couldn't get enough. By the time I got to college, I was sort of known for my fashion sense.

Runway Ready: How did Style180 get started? And how does it work?

Denise: People have always asked my advice about putting things together, where to shop, etc. But it wasn't until recently that I thought about turning my talents into a business. As a consultant, the first thing I do is sit down with my client and really get to know them. How do they spend their time? Do they like shopping or hate it? What do they need from me? Usually the next step is to go into their closet. This part is often fun for me but painful for the client! I look at everything – clothes, shoes, underwear, jewelry, purses – and get rid of anything that doesn't make them look fabulous. We do a body type and color analysis and then we go shopping. But I don't generally dress people – I teach people how to dress themselves in a way that's flattering for their body.

Runway Ready: Rachel Zoë or Philip Bloch?

Denise: Philip Bloch is unbelievably talented, but I think I relate more to Rachel because she is married and struggles with keeping the balance between work and home. Her tastes and mine are practically parallel, though I'm sure her budget is a lot bigger!

Runway Ready: Do you have a style philosophy?

Denise: I believe style should be a true reflection of the person you are inside. Are you fun, creative, outgoing? Or are you more serious, business-minded? Your wardrobe should reflect the things about you that you want the world to see.

Runway Ready: How do you help clients figure out what they want to say about themselves through fashion?

Denise: I ask probing questions about their existing wardrobe and why they choose to dress in that way. I talk a lot about first impressions and try to find out how they want to be perceived by the world. Looking in someone's closet can tell me a lot about their emotional condition and how they feel about themselves. Sometimes people get in a rut and don't realize it.

Runway Ready: Do you shop for clients?

Denise: I do shop for some of my clients. Many successful people do not have time to shop for themselves. I also do pre-shopping for busy clients who like to shop but want to save time. I shop ahead and pick out a few items. Then we meet at a designated time and the clothes are waiting for them in the dressing room. The client tries them on and together we determine which ones are keepers. But my favorite thing is coaching, where I go shopping with my client and teach them as we go.

Runway Ready: Who needs a stylist?

Denise: Anyone who hates to shop, gets frustrated or doesn't have time to shop. Also, anyone who feels they need to update their look. For example, college graduates; moms re-entering the work force; someone seeking a promotion; anyone who has lost weight, gained weight or had a baby; someone who's gotten divorced and is starting to date again; professionals who need a strong image; musicians and other stage performers; political figures; anyone who needs an ensemble for a special occasion.

Runway Ready: If you could select three fashion must-haves, what would you pick?

Denise: Right now it would be a great pair of trouser jeans; a cute, current trench coat/jacket in a flattering color; and a crisp white shirt (ruffles or bow optional). You can go just about anywhere with this ensemble.

Runway Ready: What is your typical day as a stylist?

Denise: I might start the day by going to a business networking meeting. Then I usually spend a couple of hours a day online at sites like Style.com or Piperlime.com doing research (or reading your Runway Ready). Many days are spent in stores and boutiques shopping for clients, introducing myself and just staying up-to-date on what's available. I also visit salons and photographers to see if they want to "partner" our services. I might spend the evening with a client weeding through closets, doing a color analysis or compiling a list of what they need to shop for. Or, I'll spend a couple of hours shopping with a client. If I'm not with a client, I've got a table set up at a business expo where I'm giving impromptu fashion advice to whomever stops by. Some weekends I spend time writing my fashion article for Applaud magazine.

Runway Ready: What do you want readers to know that I didn't ask?

Denise: Working with me is fun! I love to help people feel great about themselves and I like to have a good time. I don't try to impose my own style onto my clients. I work hard to keep their own style while bringing out the inner "diva" in everyone, even the men. I promise you'll learn a lot and feel great about investing the time to improve your image.

Treating Your Legs To Tights

ohlala.jpg

Tights have always been one of my favorite accessories. I started collecting tights with interesting patterns when I was living in London in 1996, and although my tastes are a bit more "mature" than they were when I was twenty years-old cavorting around Camden Town in purple and black striped tights, my fetish lives on. Luckily for me, this season tights and leggings are on fashion's "must-have" list.

I am not writing about leggings; I am writing about tights, specifically, tights with feet. Leggings are "in" right now, too, don't get me wrong, but I don't wear them, and so I will not write about them, but I do know Lindsay Lohan is selling them, and her collection sold out all over L.A. as soon as it hit the shelves. intuition.com is also supposed to be selling Lindsay's leggings "exclusively," but it just says they are out of stock of the "Mr. President" style with built-in knee pads. The line is called 6126, an homage to Marilyn Monroe, born on that date.

I recently bought a pair of footless tights (could it be my gateway purchase back to leggings?), but I've not yet felt quite adventurous enough to break them out. They are a fairly bright purple, so I'll need to create an outfit around them. A few years ago I spoiled myself by going on a bit of a Wolford kick. There simply is no finer hosiery. I love wearing my bright blue Wolford tights, even though they have seen better days, and are a bit eaten up around the ankles from last year's boots rubbing against them; until they run, they stay in the drawer. They make me feel like I should be hanging with the Austin Powers crowd; they have that swingin' 60's vibe when paired with the right skirt and top, even if I'm just headed to the office.

coloredtights360.jpg

You can make a statement with your legs by wearing bold colors and cool, interesting patterns & textures, and there's no need to break the bank to do so, but I can't guarantee that the bargain tights will stand the test of time. Then again, I also can't guarantee I won't run the $80 pair of tights the first time I wear them. And, yes, there should be a law against tights being that expensive! I found bright red and bright purple pairs of tights at J.C. Penney at the Fox Run Mall in Newington, NH for $4.00 each. I also bought several pair of tights at Kohl's - they are "Simply Vera" brand by Vera Wang. They were on sale for about 30% off; I believe just under $8 apiece. Today I wore a black textured pair, and I do love the feeling of a new pair of tights. There are lots of sales on tights going on right now in many stores so they can clear out their old styles and bring in the new ones for the impending winter months. The perfect time to buy!

There are, of course, also many places on the web where you can find fun tights. A few sites I liked, but have not ordered from, so I can't speak about their customer service, are: Foot Traffic; Garnet Hill (for kids - there are A LOT of sites for kids' tights, but these were the cutest); and Bare Necessities, which does sell Wolford, Hue, Spanx, and DKNY hosiery, among others.

Banana Republic's 30th Anniversary

BR_photo22.jpg

BANANA REPUBLIC CELEBRATES ITS 30th ANNIVERSARY WITH NEW FALL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN,
"THREE UNFORGETTABLE DECADES"

Banana Republic celebrates its 30th Anniversary through a classic fall advertising campaign that captures and honors the brand's heritage of delivering the best in city style. The new campaign will focus on signature Banana Republic wardrobe elements, such as the crisp white shirt and classic chino pant while also highlighting new brand extensions, including fragrance, eyewear and accessories. 'Monogram', a limited edition collection that reflects the most elevated expression of the brand, is also featured in the campaign.

2BR_photos.jpg

Shot by acclaimed photographer Tom Munro on location in the West Village and at Milk Studios in New York City, the campaign features models Carolyn Murphy and Will Chalker and was styled by George Cortina. The quiet sophistication of the studio shots showcase elevated details of the garments while the location shots illustrate the vibrancy of Banana Republic's city style.

"For over 30 years, Banana Republic has delivered affordable luxury to shoppers, giving each person a chance to discover and create her own city style," said Peter DeLuca, Chief Marketing Officer for Banana Republic. "This campaign pays homage to the classic, yet fashionable pieces that are part of the brand's heritage as well as customer favorites."

How do you reinvent a classic? Banana Republic sought to answer this question by updating the brand's iconic fragrance: Classic. Launched in 1995, the unique, citrusy fragrance was an instant favorite. Now loyal fans of the
fragrance and newcomers alike will have the opportunity to experience a more sensual, intense, feminine twist on the essential scent.

vogue_bb_shop_ads_primary2_.gif

As part of Banana Republic's celebration of its 30th Anniversary, the beloved Classic fragrance has evolved into a more sophisticated scent. For the first time, Classic is formulated as an Eau de Parfum rather than an Eau de Toilette, creating a stronger, richer scent with higher fragrance concentration. Moreover, without changing any of the scent's core notes, Banana Republic has brightened and freshened the fragrance by rebalancing the top and mid notes. The new Limited Edition Classic is formulated with increased cedarwood and teak wood notes to add body.

The new Classic is infused with the same crisp notes as the original: Top notes of bergamot, grapefruit zest, mandarin citrus, and green leafy notes. Mid-notes of lavender, honeysuckle, silver sage and syringa flower. with drydown of cedar wood, ginger, musk and teak wood. The original Classic packaging is redesigned with an elegant BR monogram grid on the back, housing the revamped fragrance in a modern, feminine bottle. Limited Edition Classic is $48.00 for 100mL. The fragrance is available online at www.bananarepublic.com and in Banana Republic stores nationwide for a limited time only, available now ‐ December 2008.

Banana Republic is a global accessible luxury brand that delivers the best in city style. Characterized by elevated design and luxurious fabrications, the Banana Republic lifestyle collections include apparel, handbags, jewelry, fragrance and eyewear. Banana Republic, a division of San Francisco-based, Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS), can be found at over 500 retail locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, BananaRepublic.com, or (888) BR-STYLE.

Runway Ready fall fashion report

fall-high-wait-pants-cent.jpg

As summer winds down, we start thinking about packing away those cool tees, sexy minis and jeweled sandals, and begin preparing ourselves mentally and physically for the grueling months ahead.

Though I love the kick-back, beach-style summer fashions – perhaps it’s the Florida girl in me – I still get a little excited for fall. It’s another chance to revamp my wardrobe with the season’s newest trends, and a perfect reason to go shopping (like I needed one).

fall-dress-cent.jpg

Fashion is all about versatility, fun and risk – and I’m seeing many interesting pieces for fall 2008. First, say goodbye to loud, screaming in-your-face prints and frilly fashions; say hello to sophisticated, strong feminine clean lines. A new maturity is taking shape in fashion this season, and I love it.

Among my favorite standouts are high-waisted trousers (I’m digging the DKNY version). This look is a total resurrection from the late 80s (think Meg Ryan, “When Harry met Sally”).

fall-pen-skirt-cent.jpg

You’ll also see an eclectic mix of fabrics, prints and styles from decades past, including a 1940s look (in my opinion, totally flattering to a women’s body) with sculpted pencil skirts and sharp silhouette dresses that fall to the knee. You’ll also be reminded of Kate Hepburn’s penchant for sporting menswear with pants and ties (the style shocker of its time).

Match up these old-time favorites with my newest obsession in shoes – a retro Oxford in a T-strap, Mary Jane or patent peep-toe pump – and you’re sitting pretty, sister.

There is also a trend toward mixing styles, such as sporty and chic, which will result in some interesting combinations. Look for sporty details with Polo stripe sweaters, corduroy skirts and colorful leggings in solid or very funky patterns and textures.

fall-strip-cent.jpg

I’m also fixated on the skinny jeans in all colors that are still out in full force – pair it with an oversized chiffon blouse, top it off with a black vest and ankle boot and you’ve got Sienna Miller’s look.

We love the variety of designer jeans on the market theses days (and believe me there are plenty), but I’m excited that my all-time favorite is back, the boyfriend jeans made popular in the 80s with their loose style, baggy bum and roll-’em-up, clamdigger option.

Fall colors include warm hues of red, gray, mustard yellow, blues and purple, and muted browns reminiscent of the fall landscapes, with subtle bursts of color in accessories. Some key color combinations this season are gray with yellow, gray with red, yellow and navy blue, black and yellow.

falll-jeans.jpg

And what’s the dress code for the clubbing and cocktail party crowd? In fact, all sorts of looks will be making it past the velvet rope this season. Beth Gross-Santos, owner of Le Club Boutique in downtown Portsmouth, offers her thoughts for fall:

“Grays and silver are making a comeback for cocktail dresses. Last year, metallic came on the scene and will remain strong this year. Purple is also becoming a staple for a bold and beautiful color for dress-up attire. Leggings are also becoming a staple to work with the baby doll dresses or long tops. Tops with wide bands on the bottom and the bubble dress are popular looks, since they also look great with leggings. The search for fresh looks is never-ending, and Gross-Santos says it’s fun to motivate the shopper to try something new.

cocktail-dress.jpg

Indeed, a girl’s look is a total package, and this means accessories are as important as your clothes – the right shoe, handbag and jewelry are essential when finishing off a chic, put-together look. Martha Stolzer, owner of Serendipity in downtown Portsmouth, will be showing beautiful jewel tones in soft fabrics that are both elegant and comfortable, so they can move easily from work to home to a night on the town.

Layering continues to be a great way to transition from summer to fall. Wide, long cotton scarves with great prints add a creative flair to basics. Still not sure if you have a tunic or a dress? Add a pair of leggings in different colors and textures, and you won't have to worry! Gold tone jewelry with inspirational charms and stones are the latest in Hollywood and here in Portsmouth as well.

Sheila Fleming, owner of All She Wears in Hampton, says this season’s must-have coats include “swing coats, faux fur, belted suede trench, sweater coats and fitted crop jackets … all very chic” this season.

fall-coat-cent.jpg

Makeup is equally important in your transition into fall. Joya Beauty makeup artist Joanne McDonough says: “The fall look is all about radiant skin … nothing overly powdered or shiny. The focus is still on perfect skin that looks fresh and has sateen feel. Gold is the metal color of choice applied to the eyes with bold eyeliner that achieves a totally modern look. There are two palettes this season. … The bold, graphic look with lots of different textures – cream shadows that dry to a lovely wearable powder and then layered with accent powder shadow. Vintage dark plum shown as the color of the season with warm gold and peach tones are adventurous and for the risk takers. Jewel tones, metallics and shimmers or vibrant green mixed with a glistening metallic make those shorter days a bit more sparkly. As a contrast, the second palette is cool and neutral. It accentuates the matte trend. Barely blushing the cheeks in soft pink and warm spice tones to create that flawless skin look.”

My biggest piece of fashion advice to stay on top of your game is pay attention to what your favorite celebrities are wearing – they’re dishing out big money for high-priced stylists to guide them through the ever-changing “dos” and “don’ts” of looking fabulous.

And remember, great sales are now in progress on spring and summer goods. Stock up on summer goods for next year with amazing prices; most items on the racks are marked down as much as 75 percent off. That’s a steal!

Singer Janet Jackson has partnered with Australian fashion designer Bruno Schiav to launch a line of lingerie called Pleasure Principle. (Her 1987 tune, "Pleasure Principle," inspired the name.)

The under $40 collection — featuring Chantilly lace and satin and rich colors like burgundy — offers various bra styles (demi cups to full coverage), with sizes from 32A to 44G.

"There's something for every woman, and that's very important to us," Jackson said at a press conference. "I've always hated when lingerie is uncomfortable, so the fit and comfort was key."

The singer says she was hands-on during designing — sometimes working until 4 a.m.

Said Jackson, "People have come to me with other ideas, but lingerie is a passion for me, and just like music and acting, I can't do it unless I put 100% into it."

Her line hits mass retailers in November. Source Us Weekly.

Expert Style Tips To Instantly Transform Your Figure

tips-cent.jpg

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wished that there was something you could immediately do that would quickly and easily improve your figure. Would you like to reshape your figure, look 10 lbs thinner, 2 inches taller, have a fuller bust line, or disappear a large bottom? Well with the following professional tips and advice your wish as been granted and you will be able to instantly visually transform and enhance your figure.

Use Line Illusions - There are four types of line vertical, horizontal, diagonal and curved. Each type of line creates a different kind of illusions. Vertical lines create a slimming elongated illusion. Use verticals on areas of your body you want to look thinner or longer. Horizontal lines create a wide shorten illusion. Use horizontal lines on areas of your body that you want to enlarge or shorten. Diagonal lines divert the eye away from the area it is used on. Use diagonal lines on areas of your body you want to conceal and camouflage. Curve lines create the illusion of rounded curves. Use curve lines on areas of the body you want to lift or look curvaceous. Line illusion is one the most effective techniques you can use to reshape and transform your figure.

Employ The Power Of Color - Color can be used 3 ways to transform your figure. One by applying light colors to areas of your body you want to accentuate or enlarge and dark colors on the areas of your body you want to conceal or make look smaller. Two dress monochrome (all in one color) which will make your appear slimmer and taller. Three use color to create flattering lines.

Utilize The Effects Of Fabric - When selecting fabrics to transform your figure you have to take into consideration the weight and texture of the fabric and if the fabric has a print. Medium to lightweight soft non-cling fabric with a smooth matte texture will slim the area of the body they are worn over. Heavy bulky or stiff fabric with shiny or ruff texture will add weight and fullness to the areas of the body they are worn over. Bold bright prints and patterns will make you look heavier. Vertical prints will slim and elongate the areas they are worn over and horizontal prints will widen and shorten the areas they are worn over.

Don't Forget To Accessorize - Accessories are a great way to add flattering lines where you need them. Want to slim a large bust line add a triple layer necklace that ends ? inch or more below the bust line. Want to accentuate a small waist add a wide bright belt. Want to elongate your neck put on a pair of dangling earrings. Accessories are an inexpensive, fun and powerful way to successfully transform your figure.

Runway Ready's top '08 fashion trends

mich-top-cent-f.jpg

We fashion-conscious women are always obsessing to keep up with the latest fashion trends. And let's face it, we don't all possess Carrie Bradshaw's instinct for pulling a potluck fashion trend out of her fedora (she's the MacGyver of fashion).

Most busy girls out there will drop a lot of cash on high-fashion magazines, spend hours on the Web searching for the newest trends or, if you have the money, hire a stylist.

Sorting through the millions of designers and styles out there can be quite daunting for some women, but for me it's just another day at the job. So get out a pen, paper and maybe your credit card – I've zeroed in on the top hottest fashion trends for 2008.

mich-1.jpg

The summer palette of colors is black, yellow, blue and grey, pink and white. Stripes are everywhere and, quite frankly, I'm feeling a little obsessed with this season's stripes. The thing is, when I love a certain trend, I have to have it in every color and every style. That's just me.

Some fashionistas might disagree, but I'm soooo over the busy, geometric patterns – they give me a headache. In my opinion, this year's fashion focus is all about a clean, sleek, put-together look.

Again, key word "sleek" – fitted dresses are back, but the bubble dress that I thought would be put to dress pasture this year is keeping a steady spot among this summer's must-haves with new art-inspired prints. (Tip: Try not to blind someone with some of the over-the-top neon colors out there).

mich-dress-clothes.jpg

Do buy slick pencil skirts, high-waisted dress pants, tailored capris, over-sized bubble shirts and tailored fitted blouses. Some say layering is out; I disagree. Sure, more then three layers is just silly, but lightly layering a couple pieces does work. I especially love a plain-colored tank or vest over a white T-shirt.

mich-summer-tops.jpg

Jeans will never go out – so for a chic night out, grab a nice white or blue jean (not too tight or frayed). Shop for a hot pair of jeans at Victoria's Secret, True Religion, Juicy Couture, Seven Jeans and Citizens of Humanity (whatever your jean obsession is). Match them with a sleek, quality tee and fitted cropped cotton or leather jacket, then add a stylish pair of comfy summer sandals with a heel or cute pair of ballet flats.

jeans-look-web.jpg

Every girl must own a pair of super-size silver hoop earrings this summer, a sexy pair of sandals, a versatile white statement handbag and a sophisticated scarf that can transform your look from day to night. It's the little things that make fashion work.

Most of these looks can be found at Victoria's Secret (www.victoriassecret.com/collection). I've been a fan of this collection for years. The Victoria's Secret fashion line is not only sexy, it's made for a women's body. Some other looks shown here are from another one of my all-time favorite designers, Michael Kors. I recommend you visit his collection at www.michealkors.com.

The Many Benefits of Hemp Fabric

flowerweb.jpg

Why Hemp?
Environmental and health- conscious consumers are concerned about the products they buy, but buyer beware, because labels can be misleading. For example, organic cotton does not mean chemical-free and environmentally- friendly does not necessarily mean chemical-free. Consumers aren't always told whether the garment has been chemically- altered at some stage of the process from, the harvesting to the final stages of fabric manufacturing.

eathnew.jpg

Although environmental and health conscious consumers have traditionally favored cotton fibres over synthetic clothing, cotton is one of the most environmentally unfriendly crops grown. Although organic cotton standards have helped to decrease the impact that cotton crops have on the environment, there is still a great need for improvement.

eartth-web-2.jpg

Hemp leaf against blue sky In contrast to organic cotton, hemp grows extremely fast, producing more fiber yield per acre than any other source. Hemp can produce 250% more fiber than cotton and 600% more fiber than flax using the same amount of land. The acreage needed to obtain equal yields of fiber places hemp at an advantage over other fibers. hemp leaves the soil in excellent condition for any succeeding crop, especially when weeds may otherwise prove troublesome. Where the ground permits, hemp's strong roots descend three feet deep or more, anchoring and protecting the soil from runoff and building and preserving topsoil and subsoil structures similar to those found in forests. Moreover, hemp does not exhaust the soil. hemp plants shed their leaves all through the growing season, adding rich organic matter to the topsoil and helping it retain moisture. Farmers have reported excellent hemp growth on land that has been cultivated steadily for nearly 100 years.

A SEA OF COLOR

marsh-cent.jpg

Tips for Making the Most of Your Swim Attire –

(Spring/Summer 2008) – Brilliant colors, simple gold accents and stand-out prints make this swimsuit season versatile and fun. This summer, though, it’s not just about the suit anymore; it’s all about head-to-toe dressing for beaches, resorts or poolside. “Let your swim activities dictate your wardrobe attire and make the pool or beach your own fashion runway,” advises T.J. Maxx Style Expert Sonya Cosentini. “If you’re planning to swim in the ocean or in the pool with the kids, consider a comfy, colorful one-piece. Or, for a trendy beach or pool party try a metallic bikini with fabulous accessories and go all out with the high gloss, high glamour quotient.”

marsh-center.jpg

This season, details matter. What’s in: lace, bows, buckles, grommets, rings, metallic shine and vibrant color. The most popular shades include green, yellow, red and gold. Black mixes perfectly with white. Prints range from tiny florals to graphic prints.

Not Your Average Suit

Both the tankini and the one-piece are strong contenders this season. The key is to wear what feels most comfortable and is appropriate for your aquatic outing. The best one-piece suits feature halter necklines, smocking, high-cut legs, abstract prints and narrow belts. Look for simple gold accents like stylish buckles or circular grommets. The tankini has more design options than in previous years: opt for shiny metallic fabrics and more versatility to the neckline with triangle tops and bandeau/strapless options. Other stylish choices: the bikini (which never goes out of style) and the camikini (camisole top). Keep in mind that surf brands top the most wanted list.

Accessories Go All Out

marshalls-t.jpg

“The right swim accessories can turn a simple swimsuit into chic, casual attire,” further explains T.J. Maxx’s Cosentini. “Add one or two trendy accessories for an updated, modern effect.” Sunglasses are functional as well as the perfect fashion accessory. White looks so right; oversized frames and gently rounded styles are key this season. Large totes in metallic gold or multicolored straw add color as well as keep your essentials at hand. This summer, get all of your beach/pool accessories in one with a bold, colorful straw bag filled with a matching towel, tote, pillow and mat.

For cover-ups, the dress is the most versatile wardrobe piece. It can carry you through the day and well into the night. Add a chunky necklace and high-heel sandals and you have a simple yet stylish outfit. Hoodies and cardigans also make great cover-ups, especially when paired with shorts or drawstring pants.

Tips For Stylish Swimwear Attire:

• Do accessorize from head-to-toe with sunglasses, totes, headbands, shoes and cover-ups.
• Do consider comfort in swimsuits; it should be your top priority.
• Do plan your swim outfit around your day’s activities.
• Don’t be afraid of bold color; swimwear is the perfect season to experiment.
• Do carry a large straw or metallic tote stocked with all your swim essentials; sun block, extra suits,

cover-ups/sweatshirts, hair accessories and walking shoes like canvas espadrilles.

Road trip!

road-trip-cent.jpg

Put away the wool trench coats and Uggs. It's time to plan some summer fun, and I'm talking "road trip."

I for one love to pack up the Honda, radio up, wind in my hair and an itinerary to anywhere. Of course, it's not as simple as that. Before heading out on the road to adventure, one need to be prepared, packing the essential supplies – junk food, great read, camera and the right summer clothes that can be taken from the beach to the club.

I'm into urban fashion trends, and some of my favorite summer finds are right out of Old Navy. I personally like their fit, style and, more important, their line is affordable, so if the trend is out by next summer, who cares?

Old Navy just revealed its April/May collection – an assortment of bright colors and fabrics that are ideal for week-day wear or a sun-filled weekend fun, from sassy hooded cover-ups and sequined tops to metallic sandals and flowy dresses.
old-navy-group.jpg
old-nave1.jpg
Metallics – It’s time to have fun with Old Navy’s play on metallics, graphics and patterns. The gold halter swimsuits ($29.50) will jet set any girl into glamour.Cover-up with the bronze halter hoodie ($24.50) and plaid linen shorts ($22.50) for poolside fun. As day transitions to night, a T-shirt embellished with paillettes ($19.50) and linen drawstring pants ($29.50) add a little shine to summer nights.
old-navy-3.jpg
Mexicali– Old Navy’s Mexicali embroidered keyhole halter dress ($39.50) will instantly add a flirty look to any wardrobe. Break out belted pedal pushers ($29.50) and a Mexicali embroidered squareneck shirt ($24.50) for a relaxing day in the sun. If the day calls for a casual feel, he can pair up board shorts ($19.50) with a short-sleeved textured button-front shirt ($19.50)
old-navy2.jpg
Saturated Color – Old Navy ushers in spring with a return to femininity and saturated color. For a fun night out, high-waisted cuffed shorts ($24.50) with a brightly colored zigzag keyhole halter ($24.50) offer a modern and sleek look, while a tropical print halter dress ($39.50) adds an air of elegance to any evening. Men can add a twist to their every day wardrobe by adding a splash of color juxtaposed with white. Pairing white pants ($29.50) with a bright striped tee ($12.50), or white Bermuda shorts ($19.50) with a striped hoodie ($19.50), can take you through whatever the weekend has to offer.
old-navy-accessoires.jpg
Since 1994 Old Navy has brought customers on-trend apparel and accessories at amazing prices, all in a fun, energizing shopping environment. From the latest styles in denim to the most up-to-date dresses, sweaters and T-shirts, Old Navy delivers fashion moments for women, men, kids, and babies. Women plus is now available exclusively online. So what are you waiting for head down or check out all the new summer lines at oldnavy.com.

Finding Budget Friendly Prom Dresses

Prom dresses have become as much of a status symbol among today's youth as cars were in generations before. The prom dresses have become more and more elaborate and as their designs escalate so do their price tags. It's often quite difficult to tell your daughter that you can't buy the designer prom dress that many of her friends and rivals will be wearing but there are things you can do to provide a prom dress that will still turn heads and make it a night to remember for your daughter and her date.

prom1.jpg

Choosing a simple dress and the perfect accessories can sometimes be much more fascinating and stunning than having the most elaborate dress at the ball. Accessories make the dress and less is often so much more when it comes to style and fashion. The right hair, jewelry, shoes, and cosmetics can do so much to enhance your daughter's beauty than a simple or even highly complicated dress can provide.

prom2.jpg

Don't get caught up on designer labels. Chances are the guy your daughter is going with won't know one designer from another nor will he care. He's going with your daughter because he likes her company and it is important that you remind her of that fact as well. She is going to the prom in order to build her memories not to impress others with a high dollar dress that is probably not nearly as lovely or comfortable as the one your daughter will be wearing.

prom3.jpg

If you want to make your daughter feel great about her spending power and that she is getting the most prom dress for her bargaining buck, you can allow her a budget and offer guidance but allow her the final selection. This helps her decide which is more important, spending more on the dress and using shoes and jewelry that she already has or can borrow. Choices like this turn shopping for prom dresses into learning experiences about the realities of life while still empowering your daughter to make wise decisions.

Ultimately you can check out online auctions such as Ebay in order to find lower prices on prom dresses, this only really works however if you or someone you know is willing to and/or capable of making the necessary alterations before the final moment, or checking out local or not so local thrift or consignment stores. You can find some amazing bargains at consignment stores on dresses that aren't necessarily out of season at all. In fact, there are many consignment stores that specialize in prom and pageant types of dresses so those are ideal places to shop for the perfect prom dresses.

If you or someone you knows is skilled with a sewing machine, consider purchasing fabric and designing your own prom dresses rather than wearing the same dresses that everyone else is wearing you'll have a truly unique one of a kind designer dress. This also gives you some degree of bragging rights that are all your own. No matter how you slice it, budgeting those special moments can be a difficult thing in this day and age. Use every break you can get in order to create wonderful prom memories that last much longer than prom dresses for your daughter.

DRESS OUT LOUD!

tj-center-top.jpg

Brilliant Colors… Pretty Prints… Dresses Galore... Cropped Jackets… Wide-Leg Pants… Interesting Details–

TOP FIVE ESSENTIALS FOR SPRING-

Free to Dress out Loud for spring when bright colors and stand out prints emerge as the looks of the season. Kick your wardrobe up a notch with pretty, feminine fashion that is fun to wear. “It’s been many seasons since we’ve seen such a vibrant, fun color palate in fashion,” explains T.J. Maxx Style Expert Sonya Cosentini. “We’re seeing fresh, bold colors and graphic prints on everything from casual to career looks.” A recent survey conducted by Caravan Opinion Research for T.J. Maxx revealed that almost half (44%) of respondents chose the print dress as their must have for the season, with plaid shorts a close second (38%). The same survey also noted that blue is the color most women will want this spring (33%), followed by green (23%).

tj-spring-2.jpg

Color Me Beautiful

Color plays a major role in fashion this season, so it’s easy to transition your wardrobe by mixing in the top spring color choices. Look for such hues as cobalt, turquoise, green, lilac, fuchsia, cherry red or lemon yellow. Black and white and all white is trés chic but update these looks with the pop of colorful accessories or shoes. The variety of designs include florals, bold graphics, color blocking or even madras plaid. “Prints are a simple yet chic way to update your wardrobe,” advises T.J. Maxx’s Cosentini. “Pair a dramatic print top or dress with simple neutral accessories; a sense of balance is key.”

tj-3.jpg

Make A Statement

The must-haves that stand out as statement pieces this year include the dress, the cropped jacket, wide-leg pants and printed shorts. The dress is most definitely an office or evening wardrobe staple. This season it’s versatile, colorful, easy to wear and perfect for travel. The best options include the fitted sheath, a flowing halter, swingy baby-doll, a sun dress and the classic shirtdress. There’s a renewed interest in the waist, both empire styles as well as belted waists are popular. In addition to the beautiful colors and prints, look for interesting details such as embroidery, lace, buttons and unique sleeves.

Jackets are feminine: cropped and swing versions look refreshingly new. Try a bold graphic print or colorful plaid with shorts, capris, skirts or jeans. The blouse and skirt have made a comeback; pair together or with other separates. In tops look for linens, lace trim, smocking and waisted tunics. Shoulder and sleeve shapes and details continue to be popular. For skirts, volume is the way to go—look for full skirts, especially pleated eyelet styles and knee-length pencil skirts. Wide-leg pants with sailor button details look fresh, especially in denim and linen. Slim shorts look great with full tops.

tj-4.jpg

Special Effects: Accessories Take Off

The handbag continues to be the “it” accessory. Consider a large patent leather tote, metallic satchel or jeweled envelope clutch. Details such as long shoulder straps, intricate closures and bright, beautiful colors make spring/summer bags unique. Colors range from fresh pastel florals to bright fuchsia and green as well as mustard yellow, black, white and metallics. Also, the new ‘ombre’ style fades from one color into another for a gorgeous statement piece that is versatile and interesting. Shoes run the gamut from ankle-tie wedges, gladiator sandals, open-toe high heels, chunky platforms, embellished ballet flats and strappy sandals. Indulge in patent, metallic, canvas, suede and leather footwear in every conceivable color and print. Jewelry makes a beautiful statement: tri-color bangles, colorful pendants, hoop earrings, cuff bracelets and chunky beaded necklaces are the must-haves. Scarves pop with colorful retro designs.

The Five Essential “Must-Haves” For Spring

tj-purse-web.jpg

“With so many amazing styles and looks this season, there is so much to choose from, but if you invest in just five key pieces for less at T.J. Maxx, you will easily have an updated wardrobe that mixes feminine sophistication with the latest in fun color and style ,” concludes T.J. Maxx’s Cosentini.

Five items you can’t live without:

•A beautiful dress in a colorful print.
•A cropped jacket in a plaid, print or floral design.
•A pair of wide-leg pants; cotton, denim or light-weight linen.
•A metallic or patent ‘ombre’ leather satchel; bigger is better.
•A really great pair of shoes; patent leather sandals or ankle-tie wedges.

T.J. Maxx off-price stores offer amazing savings every day on brand name and designer fashions for the entire family and home. You can also find an incredible, ever-changing assortment of accessories; including jewelry, ladies’ shoes, handbags, belts and luggage. Project Runway - the Rami or Chris decision

proj_run.jpg

The most resent episode of Project Runway was part one of the two-part season four finale. My personal favorite designer, and I’m not alone, as he also received the “fan favorite” award on the reunion episode, is Christian. He studied fashion in London for three years, and currently lives in a closet-sized bedroom of an NYC apartment (his mattress is up against the wall when he’s working, but it fits “perfectly” on the floor of his tiny room for sleeping.) He says, “Fierce!” so frequently that it would be a dangerous drinking game to drink every time Christian says “Fierce” in an episode.

About the experience, he says, “I’m so excited to have won the last challenge. I have a guarantee into Fashion Week. How about that? Don’t play games. And I’m 21 years old. That’s FIERCE!” I can see how some people would find him annoying, but he’s got my vote.

Jillian and Christian are the two who are guaranteed spots at Fashion Week to show their collections. Jillian comes off as very confident, her personality bordering on, perhaps, over-confident in this episode. “I want the whole world to know who I am and to seek out the clothing that I design. I know that everybody thinks that they’re going to be the next big thing, but I really, really will be. And I won’t have it any other way.” Tim advises that her collection's color palette is like "a cloudy day." The attention to detail is obvious in her pieces - they look well-constructed, feminine, and solid. Her inspiration was 15th century armor.

The outcome of part one is the decision of whether Rami or Chris will get to show at NYC Fashion Week. We follow Tim as he visits each of the four finalists working on their collections, and the episode culminates with Rami and Chris facing off. They have each been working on collections, and have to show their three strongest looks to the judges to see, as Heidi says, "who will move on, and who will be out.”

Chris says of his own designs, “I think my obstacle since coming on the show has been ‘how does a costume designer translate their expressiveness and creativity into the fashion world?’ I definitely don’t want to march a costume parade down the runway, but I don’t want it to end up being ‘not me’, either.” Tim Dunn asks, “What’s the overall inspiration?” and Chris replies, “Beauty with a quirk. 95% fashion and 5% costume thrown in.” But who am I kidding? He’s probably only going to be remembered as the guy with the crazy laugh who used human hair on his designs. Tim said his gag reflex kicked in when Chris informed him he had used human hair to trim several pieces, but the judges, notably Michael Kors, thought it was very interesting that you didn’t know what you were looking at. The skirt made of black chrome safety pins was very unique; Chris said each row took about eight hours to construct. The judges didn’t like what a hard time Chris’ final model had walking in the gown he designed, although they appreciated all the detail and work that went into creating the piece.

Rami knew he wanted to be a designer from a young age. Waxing philosophical about the competition between himself and Chris he says, “Whatever’s meant to happen will happen.” His designs use Joan of Arc as inspiration. He says, “I’m proud of the collection. It’s feminine. It’s strong. It celebrates a woman’s body.” The strapless dress, the judges agreed, was beautiful, with commercial viability. I loved the angled cut and the choice of patterned fabric. The judges liked that Rami showed more tailored looks than we had seen during the season. They did think his coat was too voluminous, but were overall more impressed with what Rami showed than with Chris’ gothic, dark vision. Part two of the finale will bring us to NYC Fashion Week in Bryant Park – down to Jillian, Christian, and Rami.

Project Runway is a good example of reality TV that has some substance. And who doesn't love Heidi Klum and her accent?

You should be dancing (30 years later)

Lately, I find myself revisiting my past. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m getting older and the years are just flying by too quickly.

This realization hit home again most recently when I realized we’d just passed the 30th anniversary of the December 1977 release of the smash-hit movie “Saturday Night Fever.” Every so often, a movie like this comes along and defines a period of our lives, stamped in our memories forever.

“Saturday Night Fever” catapulted John Travolta from popular sitcom stud to big-screen A-lister overnight. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor but, to the surprise of many, no Oscar.

Travolta played Brooklyn paint-store clerk Tony Manero, who was looking for a way to break out of his dead-end existence. Though he was a nobody by day, he was king of the discos by night.

The former Vinnie Barbarino lit up the dance floor to the pulsating sounds of the Bee Gees, whose now-iconic tunes (“Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing”) became part of the best-selling movie soundstrack ever.

Other top disco hits on that album that you might recall were Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven,” K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes” and all 11 minutes of the Tramps’ immortal “Disco Inferno” (burn, baby, burn!). The album stayed at number one for six months, generated four number-one singles and sold more then 25 million copies.

Looking back, the “Fever” phenomenon marked the beginning of my knowledge of music, celebrities and the “in” fashions that were going on.

I especially loved the 70s disco era, with groups like Abba (especially “Dancing Queen”), the Commodores, K.C. and the Bee Gees.

And, of course, the 70s brought stylistic fashion flavors such as bellbottoms, polyester pantsuits, crocheted vests, floppy denim hats and platform shoes. And it was cool to wear tube socks with shorts.

I remember begging my mom to let me get the popular hair style of the time, the Farrah Fawcett. I got it, but ended up looking more like Jaclyn Smith.

My first big crush back then was with the younger Gibb, Andy. (I wanted to shadow dance and be his everything, alright.) I fantasized about him every day for two years; teen fan posters covered every speck of my bedroom walls like some crazy stalker. I’m just glad my crush ended long before I learned about the mountains of cocaine that went up his nose and derailed his career.

Oh yes, “Saturday Night Fever” was by far our favorite movie of that time. My sisters and I were absolutely obsessed with the film and wild about the album.

We memorized every song, every dance number and acted out every scene in front of my parents’ dinner parties with their friends. Hey, they liked it – cheap entertainment for them.

Of course, its cuteness quickly died out with Dad. After hearing us play the album over and over (not many men felt like we girls did about “SNF”), he threatened to break the record if we didn’t stop. But he never followed through.

I’m a little older now, and John’s polyester suit and man heels aren’t as appealing to me as they were in the 70s. But hey, you’ve got to love all that nostalgia.

Happy anniversary “Saturday Night Fever.”

Comfort over style, it can happen!

ugg-boot-top-pic-web.jpg

You either love them or hate 'em! I was a hater. I consider myself more of a trendsetter than a trend follower. So when the Ugg boot first hit the scene some years back – and started showing up on the legs of every other supermodel and celebrity – this fashionista wasn't having it.

At first glance I thought Uggs had zero style; and the folks who sported them looked as if they were set to trudge across the Alaskan tundra with a sled-dog team. And, of course, the name was fitting…Ugg-ly.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't a member of the acclaimed club CRABS (Committee for the Removal of Atrocious Boots from Society) or anything like that, I just didn't like them.

And according to many front-line stylists, these boots were regarded as big and clunky –
defying all the principles of fashion. Many predicted them to be just another fad that would eventually die out.

Despite all the past negativity, the Ugg boot has proven to be enormously successful and continues to build in popularity. As a matter of fact, these oversize boots are huge right now.

Back in the day, I couldn't imagine wearing those monstrosities. I even snubbed a free pair – and free usually look good to me – tossing them in the back of my closet, certain the Uggs would never see the light of day on my feet.

Then one day it happened. You know how they say love happens when you least expect it? It was a cold and nasty snowstormy day. I was in a hurry to move my car to avoid my millionth parking ticket (another story for another time) and I threw on the Uggs.

Mmmm. They were so incredibly comfortable and warm, and for once I felt safe on the ice.

Who knew? I would eventually succumb to comfort and safety over style. Yep, I'm digging my Uggs now. They're like walking on a cloud of cotton and, at second glance, they're not so ugly after all.

And did you know? Now there are 40-something hip new styles and colors to choose from, in a variety of boots, cozy slippers, sandals, handbags and coats. Yeah, but let's talk boots.

My most recent obsession is with the Liberty and Sandra Ugg boots. Check out some of these favorites (with descriptions from the company):

Ugg Liberty Boot
Feel free to be stylish and warm wearing the Ugg Liberty boot, part of the Soho Collection. Smooth premium leather in a tall knee-high riding inspired boot, with a rounded toe, stitched seam accents, harness-style leather straps with metal rivets and U-shaped metal ring detail. Tailored 15-inch shaft with a 6-inch basic diameter, full-length side zipper. Fully lined in soft, snuggly shearling, cushioned comfort insole. 1/3 inch midsole, traction outsole, 1-1/2 inch stacked boot heel.

Women's Sandra
Ugg Australia presents the new Greenwich Collection with the Sandra, a fashionable boot on a sculpted rubber wedge. The suede shoe features a sheepskin sockliner that is extra comfortable for all-day wear and exposed sheepskin along the seams for a chic look.
ugg-rider-christ-web.jpg

Women's Chrystie
Now these get a gold star! The new Soho Collection by Ugg Australia features durable, comfortable shoes that are casual yet modern. You'll be sure to make a fashion statement with the Chrystie. The genuine exposed sheepskin upper can be slouched or worn over jeans for a trendy look.

Women's Ryder
Also from the Soho Collection, the Ryder boot exudes style with embroidered flowers on the upper shaft and a well-crafted stacked leather heel. A soft lambskin lining on the inside makes these shoes extra comfortable, too.

ugg-classic-web-3-boots.jpg

Women's Sunburst Tall
The Sunburst Tall is the ultimate boot with a few twists. This twin-faced, super-soft sheepskin boot is durable, featuring a reinforced heel and toe, along with a comfortable, removable and replaceable insole. The exposed fleece detailing on the Sunburst Tall exemplifies Ugg Australia and will have you looking as great as you feel.

The Classic Uggs
Ugg Australia's Classic Tall boot for women features lavish twin-faced sheepskin for the utmost comfort. Precision craftsmanship is evident in the Classic Tall's reinforced heel and raw seams. Wrapped in a taller upper for supreme comfort, it can be worn folded down for a different look and accent.
ugg-locarno.-webjpg.jpg

Women's Locarno
Now the Locarnos just say Portsmouth to me. Made with quality sheepskin and leather inspired by bomber jackets, the Locarno exemplifies understated style. This boot features an exposed shearling cuff and Ugg Australia's signature Tasman design embossed in leather straps as an added detail. Hidden inside zip makes for easy on and off.
ugg-card-cloth-col-web.jpg

Women's Classic Cardy
Introducing Oprah Winfrey's favorite Ugg boot – the Classic Cardy. Available with colorful crochet knit uppers (composed of a wool blend) and a sheepskin sock liner for extra comfort. A light and flexible outsole along with a suede heel guard provides durable wear all season long. The Classic Cardy is detailed with three oversized wood buttons, allowing it to be styled buttoned up, slouched down, slightly unbuttoned, or completely cuffed down.

(Good luck finding these. I hear they are on back order until late January. Hey now, Oprah; leave some for the rest of us.)

Most of these styles can be found right here in Portsmouth. Check out Choozy Chooz (41 Vaughn Mall), JL Combs (46 Market St.) and Foot Notes (9 Market St.) or viisit www.uggaustralia.com

Celebrate the Holidays in Style

With the holidays fast approaching. Soon you’ll be attending parties, giving and receiving thoughtful gifts and spending quality time with loved ones. Then there’s the other side of the holidays: coordinating travel, outfits, gifts, and parties. Fun, but overwhelming!

Survive the holidays and look chic at any event. Impossible? No! This holiday season live to tell the tale of your fashionable soirees without the dread of closet-despair!

“You don’t need an extravagant occasion to justify the perfect holiday ensemble,” says Marshalls style expert, Amy Cafazzo. “You can make a basic outfit unique and sexy by starting with a simple dress (perhaps one you already own) and adding elements to create fresh new looks that take you to any event in style.”

marsh-200-web.jpg

Follow these fashion tips as you plan your holiday wardrobe and you'll be a hit:

Foolproof Formal – Velvet is the quintessential luxurious look that can be dressed up or dressed down. Store your lip gloss and camera in a velvet clutch. A beaded shrug over your bare shoulders adds a hint of sparkle, and after the holidays, you can throw it on with jeans and a tank for a more casual look.

Sophisticated Chic – By pairing a pencil skirt in an elegant fabric, with a belt that cinches at the waist, you achieve a look that is sophisticated yet edgy. Appear long and lean by adding sheer tights with your favorite patent pumps.

marsh-web-200.jpg

A Family Affair – Break free from the usual basic black and opt for a fabulous winter white. Bring this neutral tone to life by playing with textures like faux fur, wool, and cotton. A form fitting skirt with pleats will add movement to this always-classic style.

marsh-200-web-w.jpg

Sassy Simplicity – While long dresses or skirts play it safe, shorter dresses can offer an elegant alternative. A silk dress in jewel tones offers the ultimate in elegance. Couple it with a structured clutch and gemstone bracelets to make a modern statement.

Party Hopping – Black evening pants, a structured camisole and elegant extras with textures, like velvet, satin or lace, can take you from charity event to a friend’s cocktail party in a flash.

Haute Stuff – With a piece that makes a statement, like a metallic tunic dress, not much else is needed. Just add your favorite pair of tights and pumps and you’ll be ready to ring in the New Year in style.

You can find some of these trendy looks from Express at Marshalls for a fraction of the orginal cost!

And have a fabulous Holiday in style, of course.

Christy Hobin presents … Carlisle fall collection

If you’re the kind of girl who likes to stand out with a sophisticated, super-chic and tailored look, then the Carlisle line is for you. Christy Hobin is having her fall trunk show introducing the newest Carlisle fall collection.

carly-web.jpg

A call to the wild continues this fall with “Kenya,” a wool, double-faced, giraffe-patterned slight A-line wrap skirt with fudge borders. It’s accessorized with the "Kenya" wrap, also in double-faced giraffe and fudge! Jersey turtleneck sweater "Surge" appears underneath.

carly-5-web.jpg

"Henderson" is a rex rabbit fur knit pullover with drawstring hem. The best part about this showstopper is that rex rabbit is alive and well. The fur is groomed off the animal, allowing them a peaceful happy life. Paired with "Fudge," a wonderful casual crop pant perfectly paired with leather boots.

carly-7.jpg

"Loire" is a double-faced wool reversible wrap jacket – sage on one side, charcoal on the other – that comes with its own belt. "Wistful" is a sage and charcoal houndstooth wool straight skirt with fringed hem.

carly-8.jpg

OK, I love this look. "Prep" is a charcoal jersey-knit, deep V-neck sweater with button-off, winter-white pleated silk organza dickie and cuffs. "Encore" is a long jaquard skirt with fitted hips and godet flare at the hem.

carly-17.jpg

"Lino" is a salute to the menswear uniform suiting of the season – a wonderful cropped wool jacket with shiny buttons and leather trim. The skirl is wool with an A-line and sailor-style button front.

carly14.jpg

"Seattle" is a puff poly vest with embroidery and antique brass rivets trimmed with plaid. "Glasgow" is a salute to the Scots, a tartan-plaid A-line pleated skirt.

carly-15.jpg

From the Per Se line is an equally show-stopping dynamo – the "Plaza" skirt, silk embroidered and beaded with square glass beads and lined with three layers of silk organza that fall below the hemline. Paired with "Starlet," a halter-back jersey turtleneck with cutaway shoulders. And don't forget this little "Glam" beaded evening purse.

carly18.jpg

"Dakota" is a khaki, stretch-wool jacket shaped with front and back darts and peplum waist, asymmetrical sash zip-closure wing collar and long sleeves with bell cuffs, leather inlayed collar. It's paired with "Brit," a wool pleated A-line skirt in moss and luggage colors with patch pockets and pick-stitched detailing at waist.

Yes, I was sold too. So call Christy and get your hands on these must-have looks.

The fall trunk show is August 23-30. Check out the line at www.carlislecollection.com.
Call Christy for an appointment at 606-988-8833 or email chobin@comcast.net

Gala Fashion Event A Success

c-you-web.jpg

Hampton women were treated to a gala fashion event at Present Perfect in Hampton Village on Thursday evening, March 15. Renowned clothing designer Karen Warren, together with Present Perfect owner Edie Argo, presented a showing of Karen’s latest spring fashions. Attendees enjoyed a preview of the new collection and were given the opportunity to try them on as well, which made for a fun evening.

gil-2-web.jpg

“This is a fashion party,” said Connie Allard and Wanda Syphers of Portsmouth, who tried on everything from dresses and tops to jackets, skirts, slacks and capris. They said the clothes were not only beautiful with great fabrics, but priced very reasonably as well. Warren described the clothing style as “a little bit Ralph Lauren, a little Hamptons and a little Town and Country.”

b-web.jpg

The Karen Warren Collection at Present Perfect features blends of linen and dubione in your choice of colors ranging from basic black to champagne, salmon and chartreuse, explained Edie Argo of Present Perfect. “It was gratifying to see so many women come to the first event of this type in Hampton and have such a good time,” she said. “It was so successful and fun that we are already planning our next ‘evening of fashion’ sometime this summer.”

l-web.jpg

Head down to Present Perfect and check out Karen Warren’s beautiful spring collection for yourself at 457 Lafayette Road in downtown Hampton Village at the site of the former Colt News store – directly across from the town gazebo with plenty of parking in the municipal parking lot on High Street. It’s open Mon. 10-4, Tues. & Wed. 10-5, Thurs. 10-6, Fri. & Sat. 9-5.

Fashion Week

kors.jpg
It’s no secret among people who know me that I lovvve to shop, and when it comes to hot new trends, I’m in. So when the style gods and goddesses of Olympus Fashion Week came out from behind the chiffon-draped curtains this week, I could barely keep my Fendi peep-toe spectator pumps on with all the excitement.

All the top heavies brought it: Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Carlos Miele, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein (among my favorites) rocked the runways of Fashion Week at Bryant Park in New York City. This is the Super Bowl of the designer world. The big players show the best of the best, with celebs gathering to get a first glimpse of the newest looks, fab fabrics and hot styles that holler, “I got it goin’ on!”

Michael Kors, a quintessential New York designer who happens to be a judge for one of my fave shows, “Project Runway,” showed his hot new collection on Wednesday. I like his line. It’s realistic in the sensible world, with clothes for us non-celeb types – clothes I would actually walk down the street in.

The line – themed “dance” – featured leggings and white jerseys/wrap sweaters, with the keyword, screaming layer, layer, layer!

Also, Justin Timberlake said it best. “SexyBack” is back with Kors’ sleek, backless dresses. Or try his sophisticated black pleated dress pant topped with a long white shirt, again layered with a tan sweater vest and matching scarf.

Speaking of “Project Runway,” Heidi Klum introduced her up-and-coming designers, each of the remaining four contestants hoping to hear her famous two words, “You’re in.”

There is Uli Herzner, usually a hit working her South Beach designs on the show, with her presentation of shimmering silver dresses and wild prints that turned out to be a miss.

Mommy Laura Bennett, who recently found out she’s pregnant with her sixth child, stayed safe with her simple line of elegance, some called blasé.

And Michael Knight with his unique, spicy line that usually delivers with the judges, left with not so hot reviews.

Then there’s the designer whose personality I could live without but whose clothes I can’t – Jeffrey Sebelia. This rocker may be a little rough around the edges, but he knows design and surprised judges and critics by mixing his edgy California style up, with a collection he called “Japanese ghosts and Demons; a soft, sophisticated, yet, hip look that showcased his diversity.

Check out the show on Wednesday nights at 10 on Bravo.

The models gave us the skinny on what’s in, working the catwalk with the theme being strong and sophisticated, yet feminine with a night glam wear of flirty cocktail dresses, or day wear that mixes it up with menswear pieces of pleated metallic high-waist pants with soft flowing Victorian low v-neck blouses, layered with a cardigan sweater wrap, and long black trench coats with a belt, giving an elegant 40’s feel to these ensembles.

Accessories are making noise with big, bold handbags and belts with hardware, pointy, patent-leather flats and multi-style hats are the rage.

spring is coming... really, it is

Yes, spring will soon arrive, and it's time to start thinking about a change of wardrobe, and what is in style in 2006. One trend I will not be giving into this spring is the suits-with-short-pants that are cropping up (no pun intended) in too many stores. This style does not flatter the body, and the look is too Miami or something... I'm also seeing a lot of billowy shirts that remind me of "the puffy shirt" episode of Seinfeld.

In my thorough research in the latest fashion magazines, most extensively in British Vogue, I have discovered that large belts remain in style, and colors range from muted & nude hues to very loud, bright colors. For once, there is not a lot of black, or an overwhelming amount of black & white - more white alone, and shades of off-white.

Common themes among top designers seem to be: Long, flowy dresses; satiny materials; very short shorts; the "flashdance" one-shoulder-exposed-look; very low V-necks in dresses & sweaters; very feminine, lacy, sheer fabrics; most dresses are anything but form-fitting; very hippie 70's style dresses; cardigan & cropped sweaters; long necklaces with large beads; shoulder pads (yuck!); striped 80's preppie shirts, but with a lower cut; mis-matched patterns on tops & bottoms; kimono-inspired tops & dresses; "old-Hollywood" style outfits for men & women; shirtdresses; sailor-style looks; and, lastly, the ponytail - it's everywhere, especially prevalent with formal wear, perhaps to accentuate the accessories?

By the way, both of the perfumes mentioned in a previous blog entry arrived today, intact, and are definately not designer imposters; I think that was my biggest fear with ordering online. I wonder how many bottles are left in the world now???
