Hair salons are being inundated with requests for Beyoncé's latest style. Blame it on her edgy alter ego Sasha Fierce, or the 45 million YouTube followers engrossed in her Single Ladies video, but Beyoncé's influence is spreading to a hair salon near you.
Watch the Single Ladies video at youtube.com

"The Beyoncé is basically a streamlined backcombed bouffant," says celebrity hairstylist Errol Douglas. "It's very contemporary, a more tailored version of the big, glam bouffant hair in the 80s. This style is easier to do but the transformation element is still there - you feel different instantly. It's a sassy look, popular on the catwalk, and it's very versatile - you can dress it up with makeup or leave it without."
"Beyoncé has become so big … everyone wants a piece of her, and this is an easy, accessible way to get that," he adds.
With its nod to the 80s, the Beyoncé confirms that it's not just stonewashed jeans and leotards that are coming back - hair is having a revival, too. The main appeal of the style is its convenience factor: it doesn't require you to cut or dye your hair; it works on African American and Caucasian hair; it suits most ages.
At most salons, the look will set you back between $100 and $350, depending on how much time is spent creating it. Stylists are currently doing half a dozen interpretations of the Beyoncé daily. However, it is also a style you can recreate on a smaller budget at home (see below).
Another benefit of this version of the look is its age-defying properties. "A tight ponytail actually softens the face," says Douglas. "Back in the 40s and 50s, before facelifts, they would pull the hair back, which automatically pulls the skin up, and then add a wig on top."
How To Recreate The Beyoncé At Home
If you don't have long hair and you're looking for a quick fix, you can buy ready-made ponytails from hair shops that attach simply with a hair band or clip. The other option is to buy the hair and attach it yourself. If you are doing this, wash and blow-dry your hair the night before (if you wash it on the day, you won't get longevity out of the style).
On the day, straighten your hair to smoothen the hairline - don't forget the hair at the back of your head. Then leave an inch of your hair at the front (this will cover over the backcombing) and start backcombing the rest of your hair, taking it a section at a time. Use a non-aerosol spray for afro hair, such as Matrix Air Trix Strong Hold Non-Aerosol spray. Use a lighter spray for Caucasian hair, such as Matrix Vavoom, which won't make the hair greasy. Hold the comb at a 45-degree angle - this will give you more height.
Tip your head forward and spray underneath lightly to brush up short bits of hair. Then brush the inch of hair at the front to slick over the backcomb effect, pulling the whole thing together into a tight ponytail. Create the ponytail just below the crown - it can look severe if it is too high up.
If using synthetic hair, take a section and use as many kirby grips as necessary to attach it to your own hair. Once one section is secure, continue to unravel the synthetic hair around the ponytail and secure it to your hair - be sure that the attachment is nice and tight. Ask a friend to help and check that the hair is symmetrical. Then take two inches of synthetic hair and wrap it around the join so it looks seamless, and pin this in place.
Finish by trimming the ends of the ponytail and adding shine wax to the front of your hair for a sleek look.

What Hair Style Complements Your Face?
Face type: To identify your face shape, pull all your hair back from your face with a hairband. Then, while standing in front of a mirror, use lipstick or a washable marker to trace your face shape onto the mirror. Then read on for personalized tips.
Round face. Cuts that have angles are your best bet. Angular cuts offset the roundness of your face. Chin-length or longer cuts are best, with longer layers in the back. Avoid straightening your hair against the sides of your face – a little height on the top and wave throughout will make your face look slimmer and prettiest.
Heart-shaped face. Since you have more width at the top of your head, it’s best to concentrate on keeping your hair flat on top, with more fullness around the jawline. Get a chin-length cut that has many layers at the ends or flip the ends out; this will give your hair more width. Or, if you prefer long hair, start long layers at your chin to give hair more body on the lower half. To make a prominent forehead look smaller, add long bangs that sweep across your face to the side, tapering towards the earlobe.
Square jaw. To balance a square jaw, rounded haircuts are best. Think the traditional Vidal Sassoon bob – straight across the bottom without any layers, allowing it to curve inwards toward the jaw, softening the square shape.
Long, narrow face. If your face is long and thin, steer clear of cuts with height – say no to the new Mohawk, updated Farrah Fawcett ’do or short, curly cuts. Instead, keep your hair mid-to-long, and add lots of layers in the sides to give it width volume. If you already have super- thick or curly hair, style it so it’s back from your face, and doesn’t cover any of your features.
Body and hair type: Your stature and hair structure can also affect the type of style that looks best on you.
Plus-size. If you’re a bit heavy, even if you show the weight in your face, your head will tend to look small in proportion to your body. Short haircuts can make your head appear even less distinct. To balance out your entire body, wear your hair at least shoulder-length with soft layers that are super-feminine. Plus-size model Mia Tyler makes long hair look fab.
Thin. If you’re on the thin side, short haircuts look best because they aren’t overpowering, yet your small bone structure keeps you looking feminine without a traditional feminine haircut. Think Halle Berry or Winona Ryder. If you prefer long hair, just make sure it’s not too long and don’t give it too much body, since it can overpower your face and frame.
Curly hair. Since curly hair is so dry, make sure to use a leave-in conditioner, which will add moisture to your hair throughout the day. Try not to touch your hair too much, even if you’re trying to enhance the curl with a diffuser. If your hair is super curly, you can wear it either very short or past your shoulders. If you’re enhancing natural wave, keep it mid-length to long for the most attractive effect.
Straight hair. Most people don’t have naturally straight hair. Most hair has a bit of wave. Either play up the wave by following the tips above, or blow-dry hair straight. Flip your hair upside down to dry it to give roots a bit of a lift. Then, use a large barrel curling iron or a ceramic flat iron to smooth out the cuticle. To eliminate weight, keep hair all one length and long, with tapered layers along the face. Or, to add volume, add very long layers – from the last three inches to the ends. If your hair is short, consider fine extensions – that go right down to your waist for a total Cinderella look.
Thick hair. Everyone envies thick hair, but if it’s too dense for your face, ask your stylist to use texturizing sheers or razors to take off some of the weight and help your haircut keep its shape. Avoid short cuts or bobs. Instead, wear hair at least shoulder length with layers.
Fine hair. Fine hair is great because it’s quick to style, but can often lose any body within hours, and look limp and lifeless. Use high-volume styling products and blow-dry your hair at the root, letting it dry naturally at the ends. With curls being so popular, don’t be afraid to try a body perm – it was made for your hair type. Or, use a large barrel curling iron, spritzing each strand before winding it around the barrel. Hold 5-10 seconds and release gently. Avoid oils or creams on your hair, which will just weight it down. Stick to lightweight gels and hairsprays.

CHOOSING YOUR STYLE!
I have a heart shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease volume in the crown and at the side, ear areas. Adding curl and fullness to the chin area can help round out the look. Wisps on the jaw area or bangs can help give a wider rounder appearance. Avoid styles that mirror the heart shape.
I have a diamond shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease volume in the crown and at the side, ear areas. Adding curl and fullness to the chin area and just above the temples can help round out the look. Avoid styles that mirror the diamond shape.
I have a round face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease the volume at the sides and ear area. Increase height and length should be beyond the chin or just above it. A side part works well. Keeping hair off the face at the cheek area is also recommended.
I have a square shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Styles that round out your hair can decrease the appearance of a square face shape. Adding curl, angled or wispy bangs, and a few wisps on the cheek area will all help. A cut that allows for some height is also a good idea. Wear a side part as opposed to a center part. Avoid straight bangs and hanging hair.
How can I tell what shape my face is?
Pull your hair back off your face and tie it in a pony tail if possible or if it is short slick it back with water. Look straight in the mirror and trace the shape with a bar of soap or a crayon. Make sure to only trace your face following the hairline around your temples and forehead. This will give you a shape to compare to the following weeks tips. Oval, Round, Square, Diamond, or Heart.
Tips and Solutions for hair styling.....
Calming Bang Cowlicks
One of the most effective techniques for dealing with cowlicks at the bang area is to try drying the bangs forward with a vent or round brush so that the cowlick will be weighted down. Another technique is to have a hairstyle that incorporates the cowlick into the style thereby creating lift at the cowlick. Use styling tools to support either styling technique.
Curling Iron Styling
If you want a longer hold when you style with a curling iron try spraying hairspray BEFORE curling hair.
Styling With Hot Rollers
When using hot rollers spray dry hair first with a "working" hairspray.
Take your first section and comb it smooth, spray with hairspray and then twist the section before wrapping on the roller. This will give a spiral look to your curls. After rollers have cooled take out rollers and spray with a "working" hairspray. Finally turn head upside down and run your fingers through your hair.
Hair Splits At Crown Area
This problem can be treated by utilizing the correct styling tools and drying the problem area in the opposite direction to redirect the hair and give it more lift. Don't dry the hair flat to your head as it magnifies the split in the crown area. Instead use a vent brush to lift the hair at the scalp. If the hair is sticking up in the crown area and you have a short cut, try growing the hair longer. You should find that the weight of the hair will weigh down the crown cowlick.
Using a Blowdryer and Brush To Turn One Length Hair Under
After drying hair 70% dry use a round brush or rounded vent brush begin drying hair under. Use a working spray and spray on the ends of your hair while the brush is in a turned under postion in your hair. Aim the blow dryer at the hair that is in the brush for 15 seconds then let the hair cool for 5-10 seconds and then remove brush. You may have to turn the dryer off and put it on the counter until you get used to applying the technique. The key factor is spraying the hair, then using a blowdryer set to "hot" to act like a curling iron then allowing the hair to cool before removing the brush. Repeat until all the hair is dryed under. If you have a lot of hair try pinning the top layer up and working first on the underneath layer.

Nashua native Lauren Mensinger recently bought the Salon Bellissima (198 Islington St. in Portsmouth) and renamed it L Studio. Lauren has been perfecting her craft in Boston, so let's give her a warm Portsmouth welcome. Below is Runway Ready's interview with Lauren:
Runway Ready: How long have you been a stylist? What inspired you to become a stylist?
Lauren: I've been a stylist for six years. I started in the salon business in order to manage my sister's salon in Windham, N.H. At that time, I was encouraged to get licensed in the field, so I decided to attend cosmetology school.
I had previously acquired my degree in business administration from the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. I always wanted to learn a trade in order to own and run my own business one day, and that was my opportunity. I helped out at my sister's salon for a little bit, then decided to branch off on my own. I moved to Boston to become a stylist there and to learn the business from bottom to top.
Runway Ready: What was the name of your salon in Boston?
Lauren: In Boston, I worked at three salons. I wanted to learn from different stylists in order to perfect my own personal technique. The salon I was at before moving up this way was Athena Aveda Salon/Spa on Boylston Street. I was there for 2½ years.
Runway Ready: What encouraged you to come to Portsmouth to open a salon?
Lauren: I decided to come to Portsmouth to open a salon because I just love it here. I went to UNH and lived in Newmarket for a while after I graduated, so I know the area really well. I just got married in January and my husband and I are both from New Hampshire, so we were looking to move to the area. I saw the salon for sale and had to jump on the opportunity because this is where I want to live.
Runway Ready: You bought Salon Bellissima on 198 Islington St. and renamed it L Studio. What's the story behind the name?
Lauren: I changed the name from Salon Bellissima to L Studio to make it more my own. I wanted something with "studio" in the name because that is how the salon is laid out. It is very open and inviting space. I brainstormed a million names and decided to make it very simple and use the first letter of my first name. Ever since I learned how to write cursive, I have always had a big, bubbly L and I thought that it would make a standout logo.

Runway Ready: Did you bring a team of stylists with you or did you hire a new crew?
Lauren: I have hired a new crew here and am still looking to expand it further.
Runway Ready: Who are some of the stylists on your team?
Lauren: In addition to myself, I also have Angie Merry, who is originally from Massachusetts and worked for 10 years as a stylist on Newbury Street in Boston. She now resides in Hampton and she is our color specialist. My third stylist is Rory McDonnell. She's originally from New York City and now lives in Portsmouth. She has been doing hair for about two years.

Runway Ready: Do you bring new cutting-edge hairstyles to the shop that you picked up from Boston?
Lauren: Receiving the majority of my training in Boston, I feel I learned a lot more cutting-edge techniques than if I were trained anywhere else. I say this because of the melting-pot effect the city encourages.
I trained for many years with a man from Lebanon who has done hair all over the world. He was one of John Sahag's protégés. I specialize in an advanced dry cut technique that he has passed on to me. I also have done many fashion shows while down in Boston. The city was great for fashion-show opportunities. Working in a city that draws in many tourists and has all types of stylists from all over the world gave me the opportunity to be comfortable with any type of hair.
Runway Ready: Exactly what services do you offer at L Studio?
Lauren: We offer all hair and nail services for women, men and children, including but not limited to cuts, color, wash and blow dry, scalp treatments, conditioning treatments, perms, relaxers, updo's, weddings, manicures, pedicures, facial waxing and eyelash/brow tinting. Eventually, we are going to offer extensions as well.
Runway Ready: Have you officially opened? And are you offering any specials you want readers to know about?
Lauren: We are open. I expect to have my new L Studio sign up in the next couple of weeks. Right now the Salon Bellissima sign is still up. So look for the white building with the black awnings across from the Mobil station. We will be having a grand opening party in mid-August so I'll keep you updated on that. Meanwhile, we will be offering a special to the local businesses.
Runway Ready: What else do you want readers to know about your salon?
Lauren: We have an on-site parking lot. We offer complimentary beer, wine, lemon water, coffee, and espresso to our guests. We are just two blocks from downtown and we are air-conditioned, which is important in this scorching weather. We're surrounded by lunch spots if anyone gets hungry while their color is processing. And I promise all of our guests will instantly feel comfortable as soon as you walk through the door. Walk-ins are welcome. We are also willing to travel to you for any special occasion.
L Studio is located at 198 Islington St. in Portsmouth N.H. For information, call 603.433.0303

Spring is in the air and that means one thing! Time for PROM! Among the decisions you will have to make is picking a hairstyle. There are several ways to wear your hair for the prom and the decision should be made according to the style of your dress, the statement you want to convey, and your hair's length, color, and texture. Let's take a look at some of the most popular looks out there.
Nature Girl
Celebrity Nature Girls: Jennifer Aniston, Faith Hill

If you are a Nature Girl, you probably enjoy wearing your hair long, down, and naturally wavy. You may have subtle blond highlights framing your face, but basically you like your hair to look unfussy, carefree, and fresh. Jennifer Aniston is a great example of a Nature Girl because she always looks pretty without looking like she tried too hard. Her wavy sandy brown hair, light natural makeup, and simple clothing make her a stand out on the red carpet. Most guys find this style refreshing and appealing because the Nature Girl seems energetic, down-to-earth, and easygoing.
Drama Queen
Celebrity Drama Queens: Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez

Drama Queens like to be the center of attention, especially at big events like the prom. If you are a Drama Queen, you're probably well aware of it and proud of the fact! Your hair will be one of your main accessories at the prom and you plan to do it up to the max. In fact, you probably already have an appointment with a stylist to create an elaborate updo that you plan to decorate with faux jewels, pearls, and pretty barrettes. To enhance your beautiful hair, see if your salon also offers a makeup specialist to give your face a complementary look.
Romantic Maiden
Celebrity Romantic Maidens: Alicia Silverstone, Keira Knightley

The prom is a great place to unleash your inner Romantic Maiden. If you love romantic movies and books like Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet, you can use that in your prom style. If you have longish hair, you may want to wear it up in the front and down in the back, with romantic tendrils pulled out around the face. Pretty blond or red highlights would look lovely with this style as well. Soft curls or natural waves will accentuate your romantic dress and accessories. Like Juliet, you can arrange dainty little flowers in your hair for a subtle romantic effect.
Glamour Girl
Celebrity Glamour Girls: Beyonce, Scarlett Johansson

If you enjoy the glamorous look of the stars of the 1940s, you might be a Glamour Girl. This style is defined with big, bouncy curls, red lips, thick, black lashes, and diamond accessories. When Beyonce and Scarlett Johansson go out to movie premieres and such, they steal the show with their movie star looks. Part of their allure is their slightly mysterious smile. You can achieve this look by using large barrel hot rollers and studying pictures of World War II-era poster girls.
Royal Princess
Celebrity Royal Princesses: Princess Grace, Ashanti
If you plan to wear a tiara to the prom, you may be a Royal Princess. Tiaras, jewels, and princess-style dresses are part of the look of royalty. Beautifully coifed hair arranged in a Princess Grace-style bun shows off your pretty neck and much sought-after dress. Another variation of this look is a bejeweled high ponytail with hair wrapped around the elastic, like the main character in the 1960's TV show I Dream of Jeannie.
Classic Lady
Celebrity Classic Ladies: Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon

If you like the look of the Classic Lady, you might choose to wear your hair smooth and off the face with a fancy headband. Use hair spray or gel to keep flyaways down and hold hair in place. Reese Witherspoon, with her preppy, fresh-faced look and thick, classically styled hair is a good example of this style. If you have short hair, like Halle Berry, you can wear it in a chic, classic "flip." For extra pizzazz, try a sparkly gel or wax to highlight the ends and the wisps of hair around your face.
Fun and Flirty Female
Celebrity Fun and Flirty Female: Jessica Simpson
For the Fun and Flirty Female look, consider having your hairdresser give you cute corkscrew curls for the evening. This has a way of looking fancy and formal, yet also fun and flirty. Think of Jessica Simpson who seems to have this style down pat. She often shows off her thick blond hair in fun curls and flirty dresses. Don't forget to add some sparkling makeup and a big smile to complete the look.
Cutting Edge Chick
Celebrity Cutting Edge Chicks: Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Clarkson

If you love to rock and roll, you might be a Cutting Edge Chick. You can attain a bold look with a cool shag haircut featuring razored edges and interesting streaks of color to enhance your choice of dress and accessories. Like Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarkson, be sure to have fun with the look and not take yourself too seriously.

Celebrities are the modern day gods and heroes, and their fashion styles are carefully scrutinized and copied by millions all over the world. If it looks good on them, then the hope is that we will look as good as they do, if we copy their hair, their make-up, and their clothes. Of course, we can't look so good without their team of professional make-up artists, stylists and photographers but even if just a little bit rubs off on us, we'll be happy!
And there are some good reasons to copy the celebrity hairstyles. For a start, they can afford some of the best beauty professionals in the industry. This means they are usually at the front of the fashion trends.
Do you know whose hairstyle of the 70's has been the most emulated celebrity hairstyle? Farrah Fawcett Major, the American actress who starred in the series 'Charlie's Angels'. Her blond, rough cut, layered and feathered, flicked style was copied by young women everywhere.
And do you know whose celebrity hairstyle of the 80's was the most popular? Meg Ryan, whose tousled, layered hair that accentuated her natural wave made hairstylists wonder if there were any other requests for a style than 'the Meg Ryan Cut'.

And whose celebrity hairstyles have been the most popular during the last couple of years? Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez would have to be up there, although some say that Jessica Simpson locks could be added to the list.
What about the men? The male celebrity hairstyles are also carefully watched by the hairstyle experts. Ashton Kutcher's tousled textured hair is quickly gaining in popularity with Matthew Fox, Adrien Brody, and Johnny Depp styles getting a look- in.
It just goes to show that fashion is always changing, even month by month. To really be on the cutting edge, so to speak, you need to be constantly checking web-sites dedicated to celebrity hairstyles to get a clear idea of who is wearing the 'in' thing. And they don't all agree with each other, so do some research and compare notes.
If you look at the changing 'in' styles over just the last year, you'll get some idea of how quickly fashion changes. Take color for instance: During winter the soft, rich brown tones were popular with platinum white/blonde color tones not 'in'. This all changed during summer to ash and platinum blondes being 'in' with dark brown and red on the outer. And style; the old school glamour styles of summer were replaced with flicked back curls during autumn, and solid bangs and headbands for winter. Yes, you certainly need to keep an eye on hairstyle fashion if you want to look like a celebrity!
However, remember that you don't have a celebrity hairstyle team on hand so make sure you choose a hairstyle that you can keep looking good all day. Not only should you like the look of it, it should suit you too. Some styles may look great on a celebrity but be totally wrong for your shaped face and hair type. It's best to make a collection of celebrity hairstyles you like and then ask your hairstylist which one would be the best for you.

The Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design, located on Congress Street in Downtown Portsmouth, was recently renovated; it has a very clean, new ambiance. It feels & looks like a regular salon, but it is actually students, under professional supervision, who provide the services.
Haircuts are available for $5, and the day I walked-in without an appointment, I didn't have to wait more than four minutes. The student who worked on my hair did a great job, and I was truly satisfied with my $5 haircut. The website lists daily specials: Tomorrow, Friday, March 10th, you can get a Cut & Color for $17; March 13-17 the special is on Perms, and the following week of March 20-24 features a discount on Chemical Hair Straightening. Check out all the specials at: www. portsmouthbeautyschool.com. Portsmouth Beauty School (PBS) also offers nail care & skin care, and pricing can also be found on the website.
I'll admit that there have been times in the past where I have spent way too much money on my hair, but a $5 haircut is such a great guilt-free pleasure. It's also nice that the school allows the students to receive tips. (I heard from a friend about student massages at Hesser College - with a strict no-tipping policy - and I will feature that pricing information & details in an upcoming blog.)
I think next time I head back to PBS I'll be a bit more adventurous & maybe spring for color... or maybe I'll just stick with another $5 haircut. The bottom line is I'm really glad I checked PBS out, because I had nothing but a positive experience there.
