PORTSMOUTH - Five months after his sister posted $50,000 cash bail to get him out of jail on charges alleging his failure to register as a sex offender, a city man was arrested Wednesday for the same offense.

Elvin Mayo, 57, of 1262 Islington St., was arrested Jan. 30 on a felony charge of registration of sex offender/duty to report and a misdemeanor count of breaching bail conditions.

Police Capt. Janet Champlin said Mayo was required by law to register within five days of his birthday and did not comply. At the time of his arrest, he was on bail for a July 30, 2007, arrest for failing to register.

Following that arrest, his sister brought $50,000 cash in a manilla envelope to the district court to bail him out of the county jail. She told Judge Sharon DeVries she earned the money as a piano teacher.

During that hearing, Judge Sharon DeVries asked Mayo’s sister if she understood she would lose her money if he failed to appear in court for future hearings and she said she did.

Following his Wednesday arrest, Mayo was released on $1,000 cash bail and scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 25 in Portsmouth District Court.
