Report: Ramirez to Marlins, Bay to Red Sox in blockbuster trade

Nothing was official as of late Wednesday night, but it looks like Manny Ramirez may have played his last game with the Boston Red Sox.

Various published reports Wednesday claimed that Boston was close to trading disgruntled outfielder Ramirez to the Florida Marlins in a three-team deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Baseball Prospectus reported that the teams had agreed to the deal, pending Ramirez waiving his no-trade clause and league approval.

The proposed trade had the Red Sox getting outfielder Jason Bay (above) and reliever John Grabow from Pittsburgh; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates getting outfielder Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from the Red Sox.

With Thursday’s Major League Baseball trade deadline looming, Ramirez’s eight-year run in Boston could be coming to an end. The likely future Hall of Famer is in the final year of an eight-year contract and does not want the Red Sox to pick up the two team options for 2009 and 2010 worth $20 million apiece.

Ramirez, according to reports, wants to enter the free-agent market and get a four-year deal someplace else.

“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me,” Ramirez said in an interview with ESPNdeportes.com on Wednesday.

Ramirez went 0-for-3 in Wednesday’s 9-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels and is hitting .299 with 20 homers and 68 RBIs this season. Ramirez, 36, hit his 500th career home run earlier this season and has 510 overall.

Bay, 29, is hitting .282 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs this year. He is signed through the 2009 season for $7.5 million. Bay’s best season came in 2005, when he hit .306 with 32 home runs and 101 RBIs.

Grabow, 29, is a left-handed relief pitcher. He is 5-3 this year with a 3.19 ERA in 48 games. He has struck out 45 batters in 53 2/3 innings.
