Report: Red Sox acquire Bay, Ramirez to Dodgers in three-way deal

mannytraded

NESN is reporting that the Red Sox have finally shipped Manny Ramirez out of town, sending the star outfielder to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-team trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The details are still coming in, but Boston will reportedly receive outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh.

SI.com is now confirming the trade. Ramirez's days in Boston do appear to be over.

It is not official, but NIck Cafardo just reported on NESN that Red Sox pitcher Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss will be headed to Pittsburgh. Cafardo also said the Dodgers will send third-base prospect Andy LaRoche and minor-league pitcher Bryan Morris to the Pirates.

ESPN.com and Fox Sports are among the other now confirming the trade. Ramirez, the 2004 World Series MVP, will now be playing for former Yankees manager Joe Torre in Los Angeles.

At first glance, it seems like the Red Sox gave up an awful lot (Ramirez, Hansen and Moss) for Bay, so it would be surprising if Boston wasn't receiving at least one more body in the deal.

NESN is saying that the Red Sox are also going to pay the remainder of Ramirez's $7 million contract for this season.

Getting Bay (.282, 22 homers) is a nice pickup for the Red Sox, and giving up the disappointing Hansen doesn't strike me as a big deal. The surprise to me is that Boston dealt Moss while still paying the rest of Manny's deal.

So, in effect, Boston is trading Ramirez, Moss, Hansen and $7 million for Jason Bay. That's a lot, even though Bay is signed through the 2009 season at a relatively cheap price of $7.5 million. It just goes to show how badly the Red Sox wanted Ramirez off the team.

After 7 1/2 years, it appears that the Red Sox finally grew tired of Manny being Manny.
